should be adjusted to size of children al-
lowed in treehouse. If the little ones can't
reach lowest rung, theycan'tgetintohouse.
Side of ladder I is simply spiked to joist 0

care in selecting 1x4's for rungs to lessen
splintering. Nail on level with 8d common

NOTCH FOR RIDGE
Check distance across from outside edge to outside edge over
eave sirips F. Cut part 0 to this dimension, which should be about
63 ". Butt one pair of Homasote triangles R to center on this strip.
Working with this much of the gable end, check ridge piece S for
proper dimension of notch. Cut Q to seat ridge at bottom of notch
and angle top edge to acceptPmembers.Mark P to fit as shown and
cut. Fasten frame together with corrugated fasteners. Nail through
R pieces as shown with large headed nails not over 11/4" long, spac-
ing them about 6" apart, into 0, P and Q members. Make two gable
ends.

Cut one 4' x 8' panel of % EXT -DFPA
plywood into three sections: one approx.
43'/2" x 43'/2 "; and two 431/2" x 22 ". (Check
your dimensions before cutting.) Notch
each corner to fit around posts. Fasten to
floor frame with 6d common or coated
nails, about 6° apart along all edges and
about 8" apartalong intermediate supports.

Position gable ends accurately and soike through assembly into

S so it projects equally at each end and nail through P into S to
secure it.

with large headed roofing nails or bill
poster's tacks, about 6" apart. Cover joint
with canvas awning held on with exterior
grade waterproof adhesive. Since the
Homasote roof will not bear your weight,
you will have to temporarily rig runners
from gable to gable while waterproofing
peak joint.

use 8d common nails to fasten. Then cut off

between them. Bevel strip F, taking off
enough material so kw side of strip is 3 ",

F with 8d common nails.
Keep frame square and posts exactly
parallel throughout. Make second frame
identical with first.
BRACE
Resting two of the remaining horizontal
B strips on top and two tight under the
projecting nailer strips C, fasten them in
place so that top and bottom rows of 2x4s
are square around the four posts, level with
ground and parallel to each other.Allow
concrete at post bases to harden, giving
it a neat, pitched -to -drain top.
STEP 2
ERECT FRAME
Dig four postholes, locating them so posts can be set accurately
as shown on plan diagram. Use 3 or 4 inches of gravel in bottom
of hole, 5 or 6 around bottom of post and pour concrete collar for
most substantial installation. In some areas, gravel fill and tamped
earth will be sufficient. Generally, set posts the way you would fence
posts but allow them to go deeper into the earth. Bottom ends of
4x4s should be given a good wood preservative treatment before
being set into ground.
Actual erection of the two frames is atwo -man job, one to lift and
hold while the other steers and fastens temporary braces (similar
to those shown shaded in diagram).

PLAN

This treeless treehouse will provide a jungle
headquarters for your big game hunter, a ranger
station for the local mounties, or an upstairs club-
house for the Secret Six. Simple construction and
use of everyday materials offer plenty of oppor-
tunities for the boys to help build.
We recommend use of Homasote insulation
board for the side panels, gables and roof panels
to help hold down cost. Well painted, this stiff in-
sulating material will resist moisture for some
time. It can always be replaced after one or two
seasons. If you desire, you can substitute exterior
plywood for these panels. While permanent, of
course, it also is considerably more expensive.
in using Homasote, note the manufacturer's in-
struction concerning pre - expansion before use. It's
done this way: Lay the first panel down flat and
sprinkle the surface with a garden hose. Put the

continuing this process until the last panel is wetted

will be ready for use the following day.
All dimensions listed in this plan are based on
actual size of lumber being as follows:
4x4s: 3 by 3
2x4s: 1 by 3
1x4s: 3 /4" by 3 /s"
lx3s: 3 /4" by 2
Due to slight variations in the actual size of lum-
ber from various mills it is well to check the dimen-
sions of the stock you buy before cutting to listed
dimension those parts where figure depends on
exact lumber size.
As with any plan or pattern, it is always a good
idea to read it through completely once before
starting to work.

ARCHITECT'S SKETCHBOOK
GPO Box 2215 New York City
THE PROJECT: A "treeless'
treehouse to help get young imag-
inations off the ground.
* *
By BILL MEYERRIECKS
Only God can make a tree, but
any determined father can build a
treehouse.
And he can do it even if the
Lord didn't see fit to put a tree in
his backyard.
All he needs is a small pile of
lumber and the Sketchbook plan
for a "treeless' treehouse.
It will serve admirably as forest
headquarters for local Mounties,
jungle shooting platform for big
game hunters, or an upstairs club-
Child's
Workbench: 5 -47
house for the Secret Six. Access is
up a magic ladder through a trap-
door.
Specifications on the plan call
for completely safe treehouse with
a floor only 5 feet off the ground
and the railings 7 -1/2 feet up
Height to the peak is about 12 feet.
If you wish to use longer 4x4 cor-
ner posts, the treehouse could be
moved higher.
Floor space inside the treehouse
is 5 feet 2 inches square.
To hold down the cost of ma-
terials, the plan recommends use
of insulation board as paneling
material for the sides and the roof.
If cost is no object, plywood can be
substituted.
