However, Firestone Modified Roofing Systems are not appropriate where structural conditions are insufficient to support the load of the completed roof installation and other anticipated loads as identified by the owner's engineer and /or architect. Firestone Modified Roofing Systems are suitable for installation in almost every commercial roofing application. Contact Firestone's Technical Services Department tor specific application information. PHASED CONSTRUCTION: Phased con- struction of Firestone Modified Roofing Systems is not permitted. ROOF DRAINAGE: Proper and adequate drainage of the roof surface is iifipoitanl lo the long -term performance of any roofing system. Firestone recommends a minimum slope 01 1/4 inch per foot. Inadequate drainage is defined as a condition existing on any area of the roof, where water remains for more than forty -eight (48) hours after a rainfall. 2.0 SUBSTRATES 2.1 GENERAL: Acceptable substrates to which the Firestone Modified Roofing Systems are installed must he piope.rly pre- paid mini In 'minimum installation the !;III lace Il he clean, Illy, sm line ul shin p edges, fin!;, loose or foreign materials, oil, grease and other materials which may dam- age the membrane. All surfaces which 6 could cause damage to the system shall be properly prepared. The project designer is responsible for substrate design suitable to receive the Firestone Modified Roofing System. Prior to the onset of work, the surface of roof sec- tions (defined by expansion joints, '•- walls, etc.) must be accepted by the Firestone applicator. Substrate surface voids that are greater than 1/4" wide must he properly filled with an accept- able fill material. Ponded water, snow, Trost and /or ice, present in more than trace amounts, midst he removed lion1 the work surface prior to installing the Firestone Modified System, so as not to contribute to potential condensation or blistering. See figure A for substrate preparation requirements. When system components are to be mechanically attached to the substrate using Firestone fasteners and plates, the deck must provide a minimum pull-out capacity of 300 lbs. per fas- fnnnr 1Alhnn r•.,n nviile am tn_Ja usrtrl to mechanically fasten base sheets, the prick mot preyida a minimum pun -out capacity of 40 lbs, per nail, 2.2 SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR RECOVER : The effect of existing moisture on the performance of the new system may be significant. Therefore, a moisture survey should be conducted to determine the moisture content of the existing roof sys- tem components. All components of the existing system which would be detrimen- tal to the new Firestone Modified System must be removed prior to installation. If unspecified detrimental components are discovered during installation, they should be brought to the attention of the project designer for corrective action under provi- glon§ for unanticipated additional work. Confirm the structural integrity of the exist- ing deck and specify Waif or replacement as required. Confirm compatibility of new components with existing roof type (i.e. some manufacturers do not allow certain types of insulation to be placed on coal tar built -rip roofs). If nailers are reused, con- firm the structural integrity of the nailer and nailer attachment. 2.3 EXPANSION JOINTS: The need for expansion joints and /or area dividers in asphalt roofing systems is wide - ly reco9nIze4 as crucial for syste n stress rsliof to prgtet;t the; long tnrtit Ittto@rity gf the asphalt roofing membrane. While the location and frequency of expansion joint and /or area divider placement is the responsibility of the individual design pro- fessional for each project, the National Roofing Contractors' Association (NRCA) publishes a general overview of the pur- pose, function and minimal design recom- mendations for the design professional's considerations in the third edition of the NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual. 3.0 WOOD NAILERS: Wood nailers are required at all roof edges, all expansion joints, all penetration pockets, all slope transitions, and at all other locations as required by Firestone Details. Wood nailers shall totally support all sheet metal. Total wood nailer height shall match the height of insulation being used, and shall be installed with a 1/8" gap between each length and each change of direction. If necessary, the wood nailer shall be tapered so that it will always be flush at the point of contact with the insulation ( refer to Firestone Details). Wood nailers shall be firmly fastened to the deck. The project designer shall specify wood nailer attach- ment to be able to resist a minimum force Sprayed in Place Urethane Roofs Single-Ply Roofing Systems Must he Removed Contact FireMone Technical Services • Whcn' hi,eunnr Ilna' Sleet is indicated. To attach a base sheet through an existing roof or attach a base sheet through insula- tion use Firestone fasteners and plates. Contact Firestone Technical Services for appropriate fastening patterns and for information regarding fasteners to be used to attach base sheets to poured / precast gypsum, cementitious wood fiber or lightweight concrete decks. Offset the side and end laps of the base sheet and the Firestone Modified mem- brane. 9.0. MEMBRANE PLACEMENT: Firestone Modified Systems are designed to be In4t9II t 1lgglnning at thw If1wnt point on the roof and working in the direc- tion of the slope toward the highest point. Upper sheets should lep Over preY1gys sheets. Fleter to the Technical Manual for additional information. 9.1 TORCH APPLIED APP: Remove the roll wrapping tape before membrane installation. The first roll of Firestone APP Membrane is unrolled com- pletely and aligned. Remaining rolls shall be unrolled approximately halfway in order to properly align the 3 "side laps and ensure the required 6" end lap is main- tained. Membrane layout may be addressed by different methods, however, installation shall start at thg jPM! .oint and E6ntinue In a shingle method. Pe -roll one end of the first roll, approximately half way to facilitate installation. Torch apply the rolled portion of APP membrane by passing the flame of the torch evenly across the face of the roll. Heat the membrane with the torch until it 8 develops a sheen or glossy appearance. Apply heat to the seam area of the previ- ously installed sheet as well just before applying the roll. The welding temperature Is usually correct when a flow of bitumen approximately 1/2" wide is seen coming from the 3" side lap. If the bitumen starts to flow excessively during torching (more than 2 "), the torching is proceeding too slowly. Roll up the unadhered half of the membrane sheet and repeat the above pro- cedure to complete the installation of the roll. Rooftop traffic must be kept to a mini- mum shortly after installation of membrane in order to minimize damage. NOTE: When torching to a granulated Modified Bitumen sheet, such as when constructing end laps, base flashings and patches, embed granules on the receiving surface by heating i1, then troweling -in all granules until a uniform black surface coat- ed with compound is achieved within the lap area. Any area of the sheet not protect - edwith a granule surlac_e_should be dressed with additional loose granules or patched with an additional piece of granule surfaced modified. • 9.2 HOT ASPHALT APPLED SBS: Remove the roll wrapping before mem- brane installation. The first roll of Firestone SBS Membrane should be unrolled com- pletely and aligned. Remaining rolls shall he unrolled approximately halfway in order to properly align the side laps and ensure the required end lap is maintained. Membrane layout may be addressed by dif- ferent methods, however, installation shall start at the lowest point and continue in a shingle method. Re -roll one end of the first roll, approximately half way to facilitate Insta llation: During the installation of the Firestone SBS membrane, the mop must be kept full with the proper amount of asphalt. Do not scrub with the mop In order to apply the asphalt. The EVT is the recommended tem- perature of the mopping asphalt at the point of application to the substrate. Application of the asphalt at the EVT t 25 °F or 400 °F whichever is greater, should achieve a uniform application weight of interply moppings. (This information is often listed on the asphalt carton or can be obtained from the asphalt manufacturer.) Apply a full width of asphalt to the sub- strate at a rate of approximately 25 Ibs /100 square feet and maintain no more than a 5' -10' (4' maximum when temperatures are below 46 distance in front 6f the toll. A minimum flow of hot asphalt should be seen coming from the side laps. Unroll the first half of the sheet Into the asphalt main- taining proper side laps and end laps on the previously installed membrane. The roofing membrane must be rolled into the hot bitumen with positive pressure to assure firm and uniform attachment to the asphalt without creating any voids and /or wrinkles. Roll up the unadhered half of the membrane sheet and repeat the above pro- cedure to complete the installation of the roll. Rooftop traffic must be kept to a mini- mum shortly after installation of the mem- brane in order to minimize damage to the roof assembly. Firestone recommends that granules be applied to areas of asphalt "bleed -out" while the asphalt is still hot. Areas of "bleed -out" at inside and outside corners require granules to be app:ied. 9.3 TORCH APPLIED SBS Remove the roll wrapping tape before membrane installation. Completely unroll SBS Torch, position and align sheet, then re -roll from one end approximately half- way. Side laps should align with the red laying line, just beyond the side lap, creat- ing a total lap width that is a minimum of three inches. End laps must be a minimum of six inches. ' tacit apply the ranee par• tion of the SBS Torch sheet by passing the flame of the torch evenl•across the face.of the roll and up the exposed side lap of the previously installedsheet. Repeat proce- dure with the remainder of the roll; ensur- ing complete welding of the SBS to the substrate with no voids or blisters. SBS Torch should be heated until the plastic burn -off film is completely gone and the bitumen on the bottom of the sheet devel- ops a glossy sheen: Torching temperature is correct when a slight flow, or bleed, of bitumen is seen coming from the field of the sheet. At the side lap, a definite rolling bead of bitumen should be observed as both plies of the lap contribute bitumen to the MM. Al ?II end Iapsr as fJ laps and any other lap onto a granulated surface, granules must first be embedded to ensure proper seaming. A Might bleed - out of bitumen (less than 1/4 ") should be observed at all laps. No exposed SBS bitu- men should be observed, except for lap bleed -out over granulated surfaces. Caution: Because of the fundamental dif- ferences in physical characteristics of the rubber polymers used in SBS and the plas- tic polymers used in APP, SBS Torch requires modification of the typical torch- ing technique used in the application of APP. Firestone recommends that SBS Torch be apl3Iied by pulling Ilia Fell tHafi1k the torch with a manual device such as a 'cane' or 'hook'. This method facilitates straight roll Installation and helps prevent surface damage caused by foot traffic on the warm membrane. While it is possible to suc- cessfully utilize other applicaton methods, the applicator should be aware that dam- age to finished surfaces and /or subspecifi- cation welding of SBS Torch will result in repairs at his expense. Refer to the Firestone Technical Manual for complete details and system specifications for SBS Torch roofing assemblies. 10.0 FLASHINGS:, Areas of interruption or termination of the field membrane will require the installa- tion of a flashing system to properly seal the roofing system. Such areas could include walls, expansion joints, penetra- tions, edge details, etc. Firestone requires the use of a polyester reinforced modified bitumen membrane as the top layer for all flashing systems. Where possible, a mini- mum design height of at least 8" should be provided for all flashing terminations. Flashing height shall be at least as high as the potential water level that could be reached as a result of deluging rain. Refer to Firestone's Technical Specifications Manual for information on specific details. Contact Firestone Contractor Services for information regarding flashing details on 15 and 20 -year roofing systems. 11.0 WALKWAYS: Walkways help protect the membrane from damage due to necessary rooftop ser- vice traffic. Walkways may consist of another layer of similar firestone modified membrane or another approved walkway system. The building owner is responsible for maintaining walkways in specific areas: • At all access Points (ladders, hatches, fl6orwa0, etc) 16 the roof. • In areas subjected to traffic more fre- quently than once per month. • Roof areas subjected to high traffic should be properly Identified by such means as: painting with an acceptable coating or by using a sheet with differ- ent colored granules. 12.0 SHEET METAL WORK: Shall be properly fastened and sealed by the roofing contractor or others. It is the owner's responsibility to maintain it in a watertight condition. Care should be taken to ensure that the membrane is not in con- tact with sharp edges and corners, and it is not unsupported over voids greater than 1/4", Metal work not in conformance with '. Firestone specifications and details or which compromises the integrity of the system, may jeopardize the eligibility of the project for warranty. 13.0 SURFACING: Contact Firestone Technical Services for approved coatings, surface treatments and the appropriate installation requirements. 14.0 TEMPORARY CLOSURE: Temporary closures must be used to pre- vent water from flowing beneath the roof- ing system during inclement weather and are not intended for long term use. 11 a temporary tie -in must remain for more than one day's time, it must be checked on a daily basis to assure the tie - in remains sealed and reworked if necessary. Temporary tie -ins must be completely removed providing a clean surface for the new roofing system. Refer to Firestone's Technical Manual for additional informa- tion. c. Protect all components of the Firestone Modified System from harmful dis- charges, such as petroleum products, greases, oils (mineral and vegetable), and animal fats. Contact Firestone Technical Services for suggested meth- ods of protection. d. Protect the Firestone Modified System from direct contact with steam or heat sources when the in- service temperature is in excess of 140 °F (60° C), except during initial installation. 0 . Roofs of cold §I fage laclltles cgnstjtute a special condition. A cold storage designer must be consulted. f. All bonding surfaces must be free of dirt, debris, moisture and any other contami- nants. g. Deliver materials to job site in their origi- nal containers as labeled by the manu- facturer. h.Follow manufacturer's directions for pro- tection of materials prior to and during installation. Do not use materials which have been damaged to the point that they will not perform as specified. i. Care should be used whan installing fas- teners to avoid penetration of conduits and other piping in and under the deck. j. All Firestone Modified Membrane rolls shall be stored on end with the salvage end up to prevent damage and flattening of the roll. All materials should be stored in their original unopened packaging. In addition, the Firestone Modified Membrane shall be stored so that It will be a minimum of 50 °F at application. k. Materials shall be stored in a neat, safe manner so as to not exceed the allowable live load of the storage area and be placed out of the weather in a clean dry area. If materials must be stored temporarily on the roof before application, they should be kept elevated from roof surface on pal- lets; stored on end; and covered from the weather. Do not double stack pallets of Firestone Modified Membrane. 16.0 COLD WEATHER APPLICATION: Installation of the Firestone Modified System in cold weather temperatures below 50 °F requires special precautions: a. Materials must remain in a storage area that is heated to a temperature of 60 °F to 80 °F prior to installation. If the work - 15.0 JOB SITE CONSIDERATIONS ability of the material deteriorates, the (CAUTIONS AND WARNINGS): material should be returned to the heat - a. Keep all volatile materials (i.e. primers, ed storage area until the temperature of fuels, cleaning materials) away from ALL the material returns to the temperature ignition sources (i.e. torches, flames, of the heated storage area. . Wind chill will have an affect on the application temperature. • d..As the temperature drops, the asphalt will cool faster once removed from the kettle, resulting in progressively thicker asphalt. Asphalt that has cooled and thus thickened will not flow and give a uniform application rate. The following special precautions should apply for asphalt installation: • Asphalttemperatures must be moni- 'ytored closely to maintain a minimum of ' 400 °F at.the point of application. • Al! milt h §ng!!ng t9uIpmst §hslalli be.lnsulated In order to minimize the drop.lnasphalt,temperature. • Stop installation if proper asphalt tem- perature (400° F) at the point of appli- cation cannot be maintained. Asphalt must never be over heated to compen- sate for the cooling effects of cold weather conditions. • When temperatures are below 50 °F mopping shall not progress more than 4 feet In front of the roll at any time. Since the asphalt tends to cool•more rapidly on cold decks the membrane must be well embedded immediately with positive pressure.' NOTE: MRCA/RIEI have developed an Educational Training Program dealing with torch applications: C.E.R.T.A. (Certified Roofing Torch Applicators' Program). Firestone recommends that all applicators who install torch applied systems attend this educational program. 17.0 SAFETY: a.
