Moisture content in an existing built -up roof must be in compliance
with Section 3401.9(c) of the South Florida Building Code. Prior to
application, all existing roof surfaces used as a bonding substrate shall
be tested for uplift resistance in compliance with ASTM E -907 to the
calculated design velocity pressure of the roof deck. Existing roof
surfaces and dissimilar materials must be fully primed with ASTM
D-41 primer and allowed to dry. If insulation board is bonded to the
existing roof or to a base sheet no one dimension should be greater
than 4 ft. If more than one insulation layer is applied, the top layer
may be mechanically attached or bonded in a full mopping of ASTM
D -312, type III or type IV asphalt.
Note: No insulation panels shall be bonded to an existing built up roof
with a gravel surface without full removal of the loose gravel, priming
of the surface with ASTM D-41 primer, and a flood coat of asphalt,
prior to mopping of the insulation with bonding asphalt. Refer to
GAF published application considerations for insulation application
and to attachment requirements published in the current Factory
Mutual Approval Guide.

One ply of Gafglas #75, Gafglas Stratavent (non perforated), Gafgas
Ply 4, Gafglas Ply 6, Ruberoid 20 or Ruberoid 20 FR mechanically
attached to the wood deck with approved nails and tin caps 9" o.c. at

insulation substate with insulation fastener and plate assemblies 18"
o.c. at the laps and 36" o.c. staggered in two rows in the field.

Option #1: Apply not less than 400 pounds per square of ASTM
D -1863 aggregate or 300 per square of slag in a pour coat of an ASTM
D -312, type III or type IV asphalt. Comply with GAF slope
requirements for slope and type of asphalt. Gravel surfacing shall be
completed as soon as practical but the membrane shall not remain
exposed for more than 30 days.

General
Recommendations presented on pages 17 -22 shall apply in addition to the
following application recommendations.
Application Recommendations
1. On structural concrete decks, insulation may be secured with GAF's Steep
Roofing Asphalt ASTM 0 -312 Type III or IV or the GAFTITE Fastening System.
If GAF Steep Roofing Asphalt is to be used, the concrete deck must be primed
with GAF Asphalt/Concrete Primer at a rate of 1 -2 gallons per 100 square feet
and allowed to dry.
2. For steel decks, insulation must be mechanically attached throughout the
entire roof area using GAFTITE Fasteners and Plates. See "Suggested Insulation
Fastener Patterns" page 13 or the current GAFTEMP Catalog and Factory Mutual
Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1 -28 for attachment patterns.
3a.Starting at the low point of the roof, install one ply GAFGLAS #75 Base Sheet
as follows: The GAFGLAS #75 Base Sheet can be installed by spot or strip
mopping it to the GAFTEMP Isotherm R using GAF Steep Roofing Asphalt
ASTM D -312 Type III or IV, achieving 50 % -70% attachment. As an alternative,
a GAFGLAS STRATAVENT" (Vent Ply) Perforated and the GAFGLAS Ply Felt can
be installed simultaneously in a solid mopping of GAF Steep Roofing Asphalt.
Whichever base sheet is used, it must be installed with 2 inch side laps and 6
inch end laps. Likewise, the GAFGLAS ply felt should be installed over the base
sheet with side laps offset at least 12 inches from the base sheet side laps.
3b. As another alternative to spot/strip mopping, an overlay board of minimum
3 /4" GAFTEMP Perlite or minimum '/T" GAFTEMP Fiberboard may be installed
over the Isotherm R insulation to which the first ply of the specification may be
solidly mopped.
4. Starting at the low point of the roof, embed a sheet of mop applied
RUBEROID (Granule) membrane in a solid mopping of GAF Steep Roofing
Asphalt applied at the rate of 25 pounds (plus or minus 20 %) per 100 square
feet. Apply subsequent sheets of RUBEROID membrane providing for 4 inch
side laps and 6 inch end laps.
Note: The GAF Steep Roofing Asphalt should be mopped at a minimum
temperature of 400 F (with a target temperature of 425 F) or 20 F above the
EVT, whichever is higher. Walking or pressing the seam and providing for
'h inch to 1 /2 inch asphalt flow out should be done to assure sound laps.
