TESTING LABORATORIES- ENGINEERS- INSPECTION SERVICES- CHEMISTS DRILLING- ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES Hialeah, August 14, 2001 Allen Seppy 1207 N.E. 92 Steret Miami Shores, Florida Dear Sir: Pursuant to your authorization, ALL STATE ENGINEERING AND TESTING CONSULTANTS, INC., conducted a sub - surface investigation at the above referenced project. The investigation was performed on August 9, 2001. The purpose of the investigation was to develop preliminary information about the site and the subsurface conditions existing at the proposed building location in order to evaluate site preparation procedure and foundation design criteria. To achieve the desired objective two (2) standard penetration test borings were performed and the logs are enclosed in this report. TEST METHOD The borings were conducted in accordance with procedures outlined for standard penetration test and split spoon sampling of soils by ASTM Method D -1586. A two (2) feet two (2) inches O.D. Split Spoon Sampler was driven into the ground by successive blows with 140 Ib. Hammer dropping thirty (30) inches. The soil sampler was driven two (2) feet at a time then extracted for visual examination and classification of the retained soil sample. The numbers of blows required for one (1) foot penetration of the sampler is designated as "N" (Known as the standard penetration resistance value). The "N" Value provides an indication of the relative density of non - cohesive soils and the consistency of cohesive soils. Suitable corrections are applied to this number in order to include the effects of soil overburden pressure and other factors. A general evaluation of soils is made from the established correlation between "N" and the relative density or consistency of soils. 25 East 4 Street., Hialeah, Florida 33010 P.O. A continuous drilling and sample procedure was used. Therefore, the samples were taken at intervals of two (2) feet, or at every change in soil characteristics. The types of foundation material encountered have been visually classified and are described in detail in the boring Togs. The results of the field penetration test are presented in the boring logs in numerical form. The average ground water level at the site was found at one (1) feet six (6) inches below the existing surface at the time of drilling (see boring logs). Fluctuation in the observed groundwater level should be expected due to seasonal climatic changes, rainfall variation, surface water run -off and other specific factors related to site in question. FOUNDATION RECOMMENDATION Based on the sub - surface conditions encountered ALL STATE ENGINEERING AND TESTING CONSULTANTS, INC., have evaluated a number of foundation systems for support of the proposed structure. Special consideration in the analysis was given to the following: 1.- The presence of layers of very loose silty material of varied thickness, which makes the site less appropriate for construction using regular spread footings and single column pads at the existing grade for the proposed structure. 2.- Length to width ratio of the proposed structure with special emphasis on differential settlement. Given the above , the following foundation systems were selected. A.- AUGERCAST (pressure grouted) PILES Augercast (pressure grouted) piles is a feasible foundation alternative. The capacity of these piles is essentially developed in tip bearing and side friction. When these piles are installed or socketed into place, they will "lock into" the rock and sand strata thereby providing adequate bearing capacity. The analysis for this foundation alternative consisted of determining a pile capacity for specific pile size and depth of installation. The relationship obtained is as follows: SIZE (DIA) PROPOSED LENGTH (ft) COMPRESSIVE BEARING CAPACITY 14" 28' 35 Tons Large grout volumes, possibly up to twice (or more) or the theoretical pile volume, may be required for proper auger cast pile installation. Page Three August 14, 2001 A minimum of three (3) piles should initially be driven (installed) at strategic locations in order to verify the suggested pile length . The entire pile driving (installation) operation should be properly monitored and performed in accordance with the relevant local and state requirements. The proposed length is based on the existing surface at the time of drilling. B- PRECAST PRESTRESSED CONVENTIONAL PILES: Precast prestressed conventional pile is another technically feasible alternative. We do anticipate much variations in pile top elevation, hence cut off and splicing may be unvoidable. Adequate precautionary measure will have to be taken to reduce the vibration effect of the pile driving operation. The analysis for this foundation system revealed the following size, length and capacity to be used if adopted. SIZE PROPOSED LENGTH (ft) BEARING CAPACITY 14" X 14" 28' 35 Tons A minimum of five (5) piles should initially be driven (installed) at strategic locations in order to verify the suggested pile length.
