These services were performed in general accordance with our Professional Services Agreement dated August 10, 2000. This report presents our geotechnical engineering evaluation for the proposed construction together with the field data. The purpose of this exploration was to obtain specific subsurface data in order to determine the allowable soil bearing capacity together with the estimated settlements for the subject area It is our understanding that the proposed project will consist of the construction of a small room addition to be located along the northeast corner of the existing one (1) story residence. It is our understanding that the existing residence is supported upon shallow spread footings placed upon compacted fill material. One (1) Standard Penetration Test Boring, conforming to the requirements of ASTM D 1586, was performed at the site on August 17, 2000 by Wingerter Laboratories, Inc. (WLI). Please see Appendix A for our Report of Test Boring Number B -1 for detailed description of the materials encountered and the depth intervals at which they were encountered. The test boring locations are shown in Appendix B of this report. The number, location and depth of the test boring was determined by WLI, taking into consideration the requirements of the project, site accessibility and the subsurface conditions revealed. At this depth, a soft sandy limestone rock formation was encountered extending throughout the maximum explored depth of 15 feet. The ground water level at the time of our investigation was encountered at a depth of 7 feet below existing grade. Variations in the ground water level should be expected due to seasonal climatic changes, tidal action, rainfall variation, surface run off, nearby construction activity or other site specific factors. A review of the test boring log revealed the presence of soft silts and loose silty sands present in the first 5 feet of depth. These soils are soft and somewhat compressible and create some concern regarding their ability of providing safe support for the proposed addition. Furthermore, it is believed that these soils exist in areas beyond the original compacted fill material pad prepared during the construction of the original residence. In order to prevent excessive settlements of the load bearing walls of the proposed addition, it is our recommendation that the footings for the proposed addition be placed directly upon the native natural limestone foundation at a depth of 5 feet below the existing grade. Footings placed directly upon the native limestone shall be proportioned for an allowable soil bearing capacity of 3000 pounds per square foot (psf). Footings shall have a minimum width of 24 inches. The proposed floor slab may be a slab on grade supported upon compacted soil material. The existing in surface soils shall be compacted to a minimum.relative compaction of 95 %, as compared to the "Modified Proctor Test ". Any additional fill required to fill the area to its required bottom of slab elevation, shall consist of clean sand and/or crushed limerock compacted to a minimum relative compaction of 95 %. Experience indicates that the actual subsoil conditions at a site could vary from those generated on the basis of test borings made at specific locations. Therefore, it is essential that a geotechnical engineer be retained to provide soil engineering services during the site preparation, excavation and foundation phases of the proposed project.
