Application Considerations Summary of Requirements and Accepted Application Practices Storage and Inspection of Roofing Materials GAF Materials Corporation roofing materials leave the factory dry and must be maintained in storage to prevent the materials from getting t wet. Provisions must also be made for storing in a well ventilated, ambient temperature environment out of the weather. At the job site, no more material should be stored than will be used within two weeks. It should be stored on pallets, roll goods on end, in a well ventilated area. Where dry, inside storage is not possible (such as where new concrete floors or extensive plastering results in a high humidity), storage under secured canvas tarpaulin in a well ventilated area is acceptable for periods up to two weeks. For periods longer than two weeks, the materials should be properly warehoused, i.e., dry, ventilated on pallets, etc. Polyethylene covers are unacceptable field covers. Likewise, rooftop storage of roofing should be on pallets, rolls on end, and protected with properly secured, vapor permeable covers, such as canvas tarpaulins. No more material should be stored on the roof than can be used within five days. When prolonged inclement weather threatens, i.e., rainy seasons, no more roofing materials should be supplied to the rooftop than can be used within two days. In the unlikely event that obviously defective or damaged material reaches the job site or damage to the material results from Improper storage on the job site, it is the responsibility of the roofing contractor not to install this material. In the case of material that has obvious manufacturing defects, GAF Materials Corporation should be notified immediately so replacement material can be supplied if the complaint is justified. Installation of defective material can result in additional costs above the cost of supplying replacement material. If the rooting contractor chooses to install material with obvious defects, this added cost is not the responsibility of GAF Materials Corporation. Condition and Preparation of Roof Deck Surface Perimeter and penetration wood nailers and curbs should be in place as specified. The surface of a roof deck should be dry, firm, smooth, and free of dirt and loose material. It is the responsibility of the roofing contractor, deck contractor, owner, or its representative to determine the suitability of the roof deck to receive the roof. Electrical conduits, bolts, and other similar Items must be removed from the surface of the roof deck; such surface Irregularities cannot be properly insulated and roofed. None of the foregoing factors are the responsibility of GAF Materials Corporation, which under no circumstances will assume such responsibility. If the roof is sloped 1' per foot or more, see 'Installation on Steep Roofs', page 9. Recommended Procedures for Applying Insulation General Do not apply roof insulation and roofing until all other work trades have completed jobs that require them to traverse the deck on foot or with equipment. A vapor retarder (membrane type) coated lightly with asphalt may be applied to protect the inside of the structure before the final roofing is installed. Before the application of insulation, this vapor retarder should be carefully repaired. It is recommended that, insulation be applied In more than one layer, it feasible, with joints - staggered between layers. The root Insu- lation must be firmly attached to the deck. Whenever possible, the first layer should be mechanically fastened while the second layer Is applied in a continuous mopping of hot steep asphalt at the rate of 25 pounds (plus or minus 20 %) per 100 square feet and joints staggered in parallel courses as well as between layers. If insulation joint taping is specified, top layer joints of insulation may be continuous in both directions. Cut all insulation to fit where it meets vertical surfaces. Cut V4 Inch short where insulation meets vertical tlashings. Miter edges of Insulation panels at ridges and elsewhere to prevent irregular surfaces and open joints. Butt edges moderately. Do not deform them. The roof insulation must be firmly attached to the deck (See individual roof deck specification.) placed designed d and installed to promptly and thoroughly remove e aterfrom roof. Roofing should not be applied over wet insulation Any insulation that has become wet or damp must be removed and replaced. Mechanical Fasteners Mechanical attachment of insulation to the roof deck is the preferred method of installation whenever practical and is required by GAF Materials Corporation and FM on steel decks. GAFTITE' Fasteners may be used to fasten GAFTEMP• Insulations to most roof decks including steel, wood, and concrete. Where GAFTITE Fasteners are employed, they must be used at the minimum rate to achieve FM 1.60. See page 7, for suggested insulation fastening patterns and plate diameter Information Refer to GAFTITE Fastener brochure for more information. Insulation Attachment with Asphalt Where asphalt is used to attach insulation, i.e., the second layer of insulation, over concrete decks,.eti:., ASTM D -312 Type Ill or IV asphalt Is to be used. A maximum board size of 4 feet by 4 feet is to be used If the insulation is to be adhered in asphalt. Application over Steel Decks The steel deck installation should conform with FM's recommenda- tions. Consult the current Factory Mutual Loss Prevention Sheet 1-28 and Factory Mutual Approval Guide for details on the roof system being Installed, and for the recommended number of fasteners per board. Apply panels of GAFTEMP Insulation with long sides continuous. either parallel or at right angles to steel deck ribs. Two opposite edges of panel must rest firmly on the bearing surface of the steel deck. Joints of parallel courses of insulation should be staggered. The insulation panels are placed In position immediately ahead of the fastening crew. Sight along the top flanges of the metal deck section or snap a chalkline. Place GAFTITE Fastener plates in a pattern which will enable the screws to contact and penetrate the top flange of the metal deck. Drive screws through the holes in the plates. Insulation, and Into the metal deck using an electric screwgun. Repeat across the entire area to be fastened. If additional layers of insulation are used, secure in a continuous mopping of hot steep asphalt applied at the rate of 25 pounds (plus or minus 20 °%°) per 100 square feet, and stagger joints in parallel courses as well as between layers. If joint tape is specified, the top layer insulation fonts may be continuous in both directions. As an alternate to asphalt, both layers of Insulation may be mechanically fastened simultaneously. Application Over Wood, Precast, or Preformed Nailable Decks This recommendation is for use when installing GAFTEMP Insulation over decks capable of adequately holding nails or other fasteners that are recommended by deck manufacturers. On reroofing situations. the condition of the deck must be carefully examined to determine the capacity of the deck to hold the fasteners. Application of Insulation Without Underlayment Felt: Application of GAFTEMP Insulation over poured gypsum, structural cement fiber, or nailable precast decks without underlayment felt is not recommended. Panels of GAFTEMP Insulation should be applied with long joints running continuously and short joints staggered. The insulation should be mechanically attached using the appropriate GAFTITE • OAP WA IllftaLS COapaaTION Fastener or fastener recommended by the deck manufacturer. When multiple layers of insulation are used, the second and succeeding layers should be applied in a continuous mopping of hot steep asphalt at the rate of 25 pounds (plus or minus 20 %) per 100 square feet with joints staggered in parallel courses as well as between layers. As an alternate to asphalt, both layers of insulation may be mechanically fastened simultaneously. • •,• Uri , et , . •.,...'.. . ,I acceptable. Application of Insulation With Underlayment: Over entire surface, lay one ply of GAFGLAS Base Sheet. Side lap each sheet a minimum of 2 inches over the preceding ply. End laps shall not be less than 6 inches. Nail along the side lap of the base sheet at intervals not to exceed 9 inches and stagger -nail down center of sheet in two rows with nails spaced at 18 inch intervals In each row. For wood decks, nails should be corrosion - resistant roofing nails with attached metal cap, minimum 1 Inch diameter or square or driven through metal disc of 1 Inch diameter. This is not an FM approved nailing pattern. Refer to the current factory Mutual Approval Guide for approved fastening systems. For nailable decks other than wood, the fastener recommended by GAF Materials Corporation or the deck manufacturer should be used. All nailing must be done through minimum 1 inch diameter metal discs or with acceptable fasteners with attached minimum 1 Inch diameter or square metal caps that provide a minimum withdrawal resistance of 40 pounds per fastener. Insulation should be applied with long joints running continuously and short joints staggered. Solidly mop the insulation boards in a continuous mopping of hot steep asphalt applied at a rate of 25 pounds (plus or minus 20 %) per 100 square feet. When multiple layers of insulation are used, the second and succeeding layers should be installed in a continuous mopping of hot steep asphalt at the rate of 25 pounds (plus or minus 20 %) per 100 square feet, and joints staggered In parallel courses as well as between layers. Application Over Concrete or Other Non - Nallable Decks This recommendation is for installing GAFTEMP• Insulation over any non - nailable structural deck, except steel. Precast and poured concrete decks require priming. (see GAFGLAS • Built -Up Roofing Specifications for details.) If precast concrete decking is used, asphalt moppings must be held back a minimum of 4 inches from all joints. Insulation should be applied with long joints running continuously and short joints staggered. Prime all masonry surfaces with Asphalt/ Concrete Primer and allow to dry thoroughly. Solidly mop each board of insulation in a continuous mopping of hot steep asphalt applied at a rate of 25 pounds (plus or minus 20 %) per 100 square feet. When multiple layers of insulation are used, the second and succeeding lay- ers should be installed in a continuous mopping of hot steep asphalt at the rate of 25 pounds (plus or minus 20 %) per 100 square feet, and joints staggered in parallel courses as well as between layers. GAFTITE• /14 Fasteners may be used in place of the steep asphalt to secure the insulation to a concrete deck. Install GAFTITE Fasteners as required to achieve FM 1 -60 or 1 -90, if specified. Application of Insulation in Cold Weather Care must be taken to insure adequate adhesion when insulation is being mopped during cold weather. If adequate adhesion cannot be achieved, mechanical attachment should be considered or delay the job until weather conditions permit proper application of roof insulation. Asphalt Heating of GAF Materials Corporation Asphalts Field experience has indicated that proper temperatures in the kettle and at the time of application are essential to obtain a satisfactory root. It has been established that kettle temperatures in excess of Application Considerations those indicated below may result in changes in the asphalt while temperatures below the specified minimum can result in lack of adhesion. Every effort should be made to maintain the temperature limitations indicated below. It is essential that the foreman of the roofing crew be provided with an accurate thermometer to check ternperatures at the kettle and at the time of application. Prolonged hdating of Roofing Asphalts at 500' F or higher may cause changes in their physical properties which can affect roof membrane performance and must be avoided. Unless Roofing Asphalt is being continuously used, the temperature of the kettle should be reduced to prevent these changes. Recommended kettle and asphalt application temperatures Special Roofing Bitumen ASTM 0 -312, Type I Kettle Po Point of Application - Not over 475' F -EVT, but not less than 350° F Flat Roofing Asphalt ASTM D -312, Type II -Not over 500• F Point of Application -EVT, but not less than 350° F Steep Asphalt ASTM D -312, Type III Kettle Po Point of Application -Not over 500' F -EVT, but not less than 400 F HT Steep Asphalt ASTM 0-312, Type IV (High Temperature) Kettle of Application - Not over 500° F DD -EVT, but not less than 400 ° F Safety Note: Asphalt should be heated to provide the EVT at the time of application, but should not be heated above the final blowing tem- perature or the flash point of the asphalt. Note: GAF Materials Corporation supports NRCA's position of two EVT temperatures; one for mopping applications and one for mechanically applied asphalt. For mop applications, the asphalt's optimal viscosity is 125 centipoise at the asphalt's EVT. For mechanical application, It is preferred that the asphalt's viscosity be 75 centipoise at the asphalt's EVT. Asphalt will be heated to a higher temperature when used in a mechanical asphalt application relative to hand mopping the asphalt. On slopes up to 'f, inch per foot, Flat ASTM Type II may be used\ except In Florida, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Application of Asphalt Low density roof decks and insulation material tend to absorb the bitumen. It is important that the layer of bitumen used to secure either thrinsulating material to the roof deck or the first ply of felt in the roof system be applied in sufficient quantity to assure adequate adhesion. Interply moppings of Asphalt must be applied in a continuous film and consist of approximately 25 pounds per 100 square feet of roof area with . a tolerance not to exceed 20% plus or minus. The appropriate asphalt for the slopes involved must be used. Slope per foot Up to 3' 3'- 6' Asphalt Type Steep ASTM Type III HT -Steep ASTM Type IV Application Considerations Nailing of Base Sheet All nailing must be done through metal caps or with acceptable nails with attached 1 inch square or round metal caps. The proper nail or fastener must be selected in accordance with the recommenda- tions of the deck manufacturer or as recommended for specific type decks in this manual. The fastener used must have a minimum withdrawal strength of 40 pounds. Some buckling of the base sheet may occur during Its installation if it is not permitted to relax sufficiently. The base sheet must be unrolled and allowed to relax before fastening. It is suggested that the base sheet be stretched just prior to nailing. This Is usually accomplished by a shuffling motion of the feet of the mechanic installing the sheet just ahead of the nailing. Nail along the side lap of the base ply at intervals not to exceed 9 Inches and stagger -nail down the center of sheet in two rows with nails spaced at intervals not to exceed 18 inches in each row with each row 12 inches in from the edge of the sheets. This is not an FM approved fastener pattern. Refer to the current factory Mutual Approval Guide for 1-60 and 1-90 fastener details. Alternative nailing patterns must be approved by a GAF Materials Corporation Technical Services Manager. Installation of GAFGLAS' Ply Felts The application of roofing membrane shall commence at the low points of the roof. Application will not be accepted If at any point the flow of water is against the laps. The phased application of built -up roofing membranes Is not acceptable. This means all board insulation and plies of membrane to be installed in a given area must be completed and watertight at the end of each work day. Any water cut offs must be competely removed before resuming work. Application of plies normally proceeds shingle fashion, lapping sheet over the preceding sheet 27"h Inches, 24'/4 Inches, or 19 inches, depending on the number of plies. The headlap should be nominally 2 inches; at no point should the headlap be less than 1 Inch. Glass felts should be allowed to unroll evenly without constant correction, or fishmouths and buckles may develop; such Irregulari- ties should be immediately cut out and repaired before proceeding. If the roll starts to run off, It should be cut off and restarted. All rolls should be rolled and broomed in place Immediately behind the mop and firmly embedded Into the hot mopping. Brooming should be done from the unmopped side of the roll rather than walk- ing directly behind the roll. Dragging the broom is suggested rather than pushing. Excessive traffic and equipment should also be kept off • i a the completed plies until the asphalt has set in order to avoid the dis- placement of the asphalt. Cut off all felts a nominal 2 inches above the top of the cant at walls and vertical surfaces. Flashing Recommendations General Application The Juncture of the roof deck and a vertical surface is probably the most vulnerable moisture Infiltration point on any roof. Cants must be provided at this junction on all GAFGLAS roofs. Cams must be firmly attached to the angle between the roof deck and the vertical surface by the contractor prior to commencement of roof membrane application. It is essential, before selecting a particular flashing specification, that many factors be considered In order to assure the optimum trouble - free joining between roof deck and vertical surface. RUBEROID• and RUBEROID PLUS Membranes are very well suit- ed for flashing details due to their Inherent flexibility and elongation characteristics. The application of RUBEROID flashing constructions must follow the Installation of roofing felts, but precede the applica- tion of any surfacing materials. As with GAFGLAS flashing details. the RUBEROID flashing constructions must be mechanically attached at the top edge of the flashing; 1 inch diameter or square metal capped nails installed on a maximum of 8 Inch centers is required for flashing heights up to 12 Inches. Above 12 inches flashing height, the RUBEROID fleshings must be nailed off at a maximum of 4 inch cen- ters. All fleshings should be a minimum of 8 inches above the roof at the base of the flashing. GAFGLAS fleshings are limited to a maxi- mum height of 12 Inches while RUBEROID fleshings are limited to a maximum height of 24 Inches. If walls or other vertical surfaces to be flashed are metal or masonry, suitable nailing strips may be provided to nail off the base flashing at the appropriate height above the roof level, otherwise, appropriate fasteners must be used. Masonry surfaces to receive flashing shall first be coated with Asphalt/Concrete Primer and allowed to dry thoroughly. (See specific flashing details beginning on page 45.) Suitable counterflashing must be provided to cover the top edge of composition base flashing by a minimum of 4 inches. Wall -ov ring and count rllashlne wheth r m tai or cemgeeition mat Halt ar nnr GAF , ia rant cone r d Dart of the flashing ec :clflcatlgn anA ar n,;e,; i Metal Flanges All metal flanges must be 3' - 4' wide and must first be primed with Asphalt/Concrete Primer and allowed to dry thoroughly before felt stripping Is applied. Metal flanges, such as gravel stops, must be set in Jetblak FLASHTITE• Cement, on top of the completed roof and stagger nailed at 3 inch intervals into woodnailers or nailable decks. Never nail Into Insulation. These flanges must then be stripped in with 2 or more plies of GAFGLAS Felts and mappings of asphalt or trow- ellings of FLASHTITE Cement GAFGLAS Ply 4, PLY 6', or Flashing may be used. The first ply must cover the entire flange and extend at least 4 Inches onto the roof. Subsequent stripping plies must cover the entire flange and extend at least 4 inches past the previous strip- ping ply onto the roof. The top ply is then surfaced in the same man- ner as the rest of the root. Under no circumstances are flanges to be installed under or between plies. (See 'Typical Construction Details' on pages 56 -58.) RUBEROID Membranes may also be used to flash metal flanges. First, prime the flanges with Asphalt/Concrete Primer and allow to dry thoroughly. One or two plies of RUBEROID flashing of sufficient width to extend at least 4 Inches past the edge of the flanges onto the roof, may be used. Mop applied RUBEROID flashing can be installed In mappings of Steep Asphalt Type III or IV or in FLASHTITE Cement. Torch applied RUBEROID flashing should be torched, preferably away MOILWALS COMPOftanor I" • from the metal flange, and then applied. Direct torching to light metal flanges may char the primer and warp the flanges, resulting In an inferior bond. At the eaves or edges of gravel or slag surfaced roofs, where metal gravel -stops are used, they must have beads not less than' /, inch high. They must be nailed into wood nailers at staggered 3 inch intervals and stripped in. The eaves or edges of all smooth surfaced roofs should also be finished with metal edging strips stagger - nailed into wood nailers at 3 inch intervals and stripped in. Surfacing Gravel, slag, or other acceptable mineral aggregate surfacing material must conform to ASTM D-1863. Other mineral aggregate surfacing materials must be approved by a GAF Materials Corporation Technical Services Manager. For gravel surfaced roofs, install a flood coat pouring of asphalt uniformly applied at the rate of approximately 60 pounds per 100 square feet of roof area with a tolerance not to exceed 20% plus or minus. No more bitumen must be spread or poured at one time than can be immediately covered with gravel or slag. Not less than 400 pounds of gravel or 300 pounds of slag or suitable quantity of other acceptable aggregate must be used for each 100 square feet of roof area to yield embedment of a minimum of 200 pounds of gravel or 150 pounds of slag. These recommended gravel and slag weights are based upon application under average conditions. In the North and South Zones, the top pouring should be GAF Special Roofing Bitumen or Flat Asphalt on slopes up to '/, inch per foot and Steep Roofing Asphalt on slopes from' /, inch to a maximum of 3 Inches per foot. In the West Zone on slopes up to 3 inches per foot, the top pouring must be GAF Steep Roofing Asphalt. Gravel surfacing is to be completed as soon as practical after application of the roofing membrane but the membrane should not be left exposed to the weather for more than 30 days. For specifications I -0-4 -G and I -0 -3 -G installed over GAFTEMI» Isotherm R, gravel surfacing must be completed within five working days. Coatings for Smooth Surfaced Roof Systems For a smooth surfaced GAFGLAS• roof, the following coatings may be used with the limits indicated: 1. Special Roofing Bitumen may be used on slopes of up to '/1 inch per foot (North and South Zones only), applied at the rate of 20 pounds per 100 square feet. 2. Fibered Aluminum Coating may be used on slopes of /% inch per foot or more (positive drainage, no ponding water), applied at the rate of approximately 1'/, -2 gallons per 100 square feet. Steep Asphalt at the laps must be allowed to age at least 30 days and must be free of dust and dirt prior to the application of GAF Fibered Aluminum Coating. 3. WEATHER COAT' Emulsion may be used on slopes of up to 6 inches per foot, applied at the rate of approximately 2'/,-3 gallons per 100 square feet. Steep Roofing Asphalt at the laps should be allowed to age at least one week and be free of dust and dirt prior to the application of WEATHER COAT Emulsion. Note: These coatings must be applied directly to the roofing felts. A glaze coat of asphalt is not recommended prior to the application of coating. Surfacing may be delayed for up to 60 days: however, the surface must be clean and dry before proceeding with the coating. Reapplication of coating should be employed as part of a periodic maintenance program. The frequency will vary depending on climatic conditions. For UL approved coatings over GAFGLAS systems, see page 6 or contact your nearest GAF Materials Corporation Technical Services Office. 1 Application Considerations GAFGLAS Mineral Surfaced Cap Sheet Installation GAFGLAS Mineral Surfaced Cap Sheet is considered part of the membrane system as well as a surfacing. The application of GAFGLAS Mineral Surfaced Cap Sheet shalt commence at low points of the roof so that at no place is the flow of water against the laps. Parallel lap lines of cap sheet should not coincide with the lap lines of the underlying plies wherever possible. Application must be over and parallel to the underlying roofing membrane. All sheets must be precut Into 12 foot lengths and stacked prior to application. Sheets may be cut In 18 foot lengths in the West Zone only (West Coast exclusive of the mountainous areas). Embed cap sheet in Steep Asphalt applied at the nominal rate of 25 pounds per 100 square feet. Side laps must be a minimum of 2 inches and end laps 6 inches. End laps shall not occur in a continuous line and should be broken by a minimum of 3 feet. Uniformity of the separation of side laps Is desirable for best appearance. All sheets must be firmly embedded In the hot asphalt and be free of wrinkles, buckles, blisters, fishmouths, or voids. End laps must be nailed on all slopes exceeding 1 inch per foot. There are three acceptable methods of application: 1. The 'flop in method involves setting the precut sheet with mineral surfaced side down adjacent to the area where it is to be applied with the lap of the previous course exposed. Solidly mop with Roofing Asphalt the full sheet width to be covered including the lap. The GAFGLAS Mineral Surfaced Cap Sheet should be picked up at each end and at the outside edge, turned over, and set immediately into the hot mopping: 2. The 'fly in' method Involves mopping the full width of the area to be covered and then picking up a precut sheet and setting it Immediately Into the hot mopping. 3. The 'reroll' method involves setting the precut sheet so it is in its exact final position, rerolling It, and then mopping immediately ahead of the roll as It Is rolled in place. Note: Brooming of the GAFGLAS Mineral Surfaced Cap Sheet is desirable In all cases to ensure complete adhesion. Also, in the 'flop in' and 'fly in' methods, tension should be placed on the precut sheet as it is being set to avoid wrinkles or buckles in the sheet. Application of the GAFGLAS Mineral Surfaced Cap Sheet at temperatures below 50' F is not recommended. At temperatures near 50' F, the reroll method with complete brooming will provide the best results. Wind conditions, which may chill the asphalt more quickly, must be considered. Cold Weather Applications Special care is necessary in the application of built -up roofing at temperatures below 40' F. All materials and the roof deck surface must be dry at the time of application. To assure adhesion, care must be exercised to maintain the temperature of the bitumen at 400' F minimum at the point of application or at 20' F above the roofing asphalt's EVT, when supplied. Felts must be installed immediately Into the hot mopping. Mopping shall not precede the roll by more than 5 feet and all felts must be immediately broomed. S; E. FCa.
