Pioneer Concrete Tile is a domestic manufacturer of concrete roof tile with manufacturing
facilities stretching from the West Coast to the Southeast. All tile is manufactured from extruded
concrete consisting of Portland Cement, plasticizer, iron and metallic oxides, and blended aggregates.
This Product Control Approval relates to Pioneer's "Hacienda" tile profile Refer to appropriate
Product Cnntrnl Approvals for ether tile profiles.
Pioneer tile is fabricated with a wide ridged and grooved sidelap providing a water channel at
vertical joints. The ridged sidelaps provide a self - aligning function, creating a uniform appearance. All
profiles have matching trim pieces used for rake hip, ridge hip, and valley terminations. Tile system
accessories are also available to make up a complete tile system.
Pioneers "Hacienda" roof tile has been tested in compliance with the South Florida Building
Code requirements for concrete, nail -on, mortar set and adhesive set tile applications. The minimum
roof slope for Pioneer's "Hacienda" nail -on, mortar set or adhesive set tiles shall be 2 ":I2 ". See the
"Profile Drawing" section in this approval for the "Hacienda" profile drawing. The Pioneer "Hacienda"
tile profile has been tested for both wind characteristics and static uplift performance, therefore, any
consideration for installation shall be done as a 'Moment Based System'. Data for attachment
calculations is noted in Tables I through 4 of this approval.

Install vertical battens of pressure treated or decay resistant lumber having
minimum dimensions of nominal 1" x 2 ". Vertical Battens shall be set in a
continuous bed of flashing cement '1," thick and secured not greater than 24"
o.c. into the sheathing with approved, corrosion resistant fasteners. Vertical
battens shall be positioned over the top chord of the roof trusses. (See Section
2.IO and 3.09ofPA 118.)
Install horizontal battens of pressure treated or decay resistant lumber having
minimum dimensions of nominal I" x 4 ". Horizontal battens shall be installed
over vertical battens at a spacing to provide a tile overlap not less than 3" and
secured through the vertical batten and sheathing with approved, corrosion
resistant fasteners. (See Sections 2.10 and 3.09 of PA 118.)
Install tile in compliance with PA 118 using one of the approved methods of
attachment for batten applications noted in Table 3, attached. The method of
attachment utilized shall provide sufficient attachment resistance expressed as
a moment to meet or exceed the required moment of resistance determined in
compliance with PA 115 or PA 127.

S YSTEM LIMITATIONS

I. The standard minimum roof pitch for Pioneer ' "., nall -on, mortar or adhesive set tile
applications is 2" rise in 12" nun (2 ":12 "). The maximum roof pitch for mortar or adhesive set tile
applications is 7" rise in 12" run (7 ": 12 ").
2. All nail -on tile applications having a roof pitch less than 4 ":12" shall be installed over both vertical
and horizontal battens ( "Counter- Battens "), as noted in System A. All oall -on tile applications
having a roof pitch in excess of 7 ":12" shall be installed over horizontal battens as noted in System
3. For nail -on applications, brass or stainless steel screws for mechanical attachment of tiles shall
have a head diameter larger than that of the preformed holes in the tile.
4. System installation shall be in compliance with the system specifications outlined in this Product
Control Approval. Nail -on tile shall be attached using one of the methods of attachment noted in
Table 3 of this Approval. Mortar or adhesive set tile shall be attached using an approved mortar
or adhesive noted in this approval, the data of which is noted in Table 4 of this Approval. The
method of attachment utilized shall provide sufficient attachment resistance expressed as a moment
to meet or exceed the required moment of resistance determined in compliance with Dade County
Protocol PA 115 or PA 127.
5. For nail -on tile applications, an eave clip is required on all cave tile. For mortar set applications,
the first three courses of tile shall be nailed with not less than one nail per tile. As an alternate, the
first three courses of tile sltall be applied in mortar over a single layer of minimum 12 ga. wire mesh
with square openings of not less than' /," which is mechanically attached to the deck with not less
than one roofing nail every 1 fN. For roof pitches from 6 ":12" to 7 ":12 ", every third tile of every
fifth course, beginning at the eighth course, shall be nailed with not less than one nail per tile.
6. For mortar or adhesive set tile applications, a field static uplift test by a Dade County accredited
testing agency, in compliance with Dade County Protocol PA 106, shall be required not less than 30
days after application to confirm tile adhesion. The results of this testing shall be reported to the
Building Official and the installer stating that the application has passed or failed PA 106 testing. If
the application fails PA 106 testing, the report shall state which portion of the test was failed;
Category I (examination for loose tile) or Category 2 (uplift testing of tile). Subsequent to testing,
the installer may repair not more than 5% of field area tiles and 10% of perimeter area (i.e.
ridge/rake) Tile with approved tile adhesive. The installer sltall place an identifiable marking on
each repaired tile for future reference. Any PA 106 re -test sltall not include any marked tile.
7. For mortar or adhesive set tile applications, 30/90 hot mopped underlayment applications may be
installed perpendicular to the roof pitch prior to June 1, 1995 unless stated otherwise by the material
manufacturer. Thereafter, 30/90 underlayntent systems shall be installed parallel to the roof pitch in
compliance with Appendix 'A' of Dade County Protocol PA 120.

8. All tiles shall bear the imprint or identifiable marking of the manufacturer's name or logo for
identification in the field.
9. The Pioneer "Hacienda" tile profile has been tested for both wind characteristics and static uplift
performance, therefore, attachment calculations for installation in compliance with Dade County
Protocol PA 115 or PA 127 shall be done as a 'Moment Based System'.
10. Applications for roofing permits shall include a completed Section I1 of the Uniform Building
Permit, a copy of Pioneer's current specifications and details, a copy of this Product Control
Approval and a copy of the Product Control Approval of any Roofing Component used in the
proposed tile application. Reference shall be made to appropriate data for the required fire rating.
11. The applicant shall retain the services of a Dade County certified testing laboratory to maintain
quality control in compliance with the South Florida Building Code and related protocols. Samples
taken shall be in compliance with Dade County Protocol PA 112, Appendix 'A'.
12. Any amendments to these provisions shall be in compliance with Sections 203 and 204 of the South
Florida Building Code.

Prior to application, cut the cap sheet into manageable lengths (12' -
18') and allow to flatten. When nailers are required, cut the cap
sheet into lengths which conform to the nailer spacing.
Using Manville GlasKap and starting at the low edge of the roof, apply
the cap sheet, being sure to maintain 2" side laps and 6" end laps over
the preceding sheets. Position the cap sheet upside-down over the
preceding coarse. Apply a full width mopping of asphalt to the substrate
(30 - 40 lbs. per square) and flop the cap sheet into it. The temperature
of the asphalt when applied must be such that, when the cap sheet is
set into it, its temperature is approximately 20 °F above the EVT. This
will assure proper fluxing of the back coating on the cap sheet and
result in maximum bonding. The cap sheet must be firmly and uni-
formly set into the hot asphalt with all edges well sealed.

Built -Up Roofing Over Nailable Decks: These specifications are for
use over any type of structural deck (without insulation) which can
receive and adequately retain nails or other types of mechanical
fasteners recommended by the deck manufacturer. Examples of
such decks are wood and plywood. Select specifications are eligible
for use over lightweight insulating concrete decks or over fill made of
lightweight insulating concrete. Contact the Manville Roofing Systems
District Technical Services Specialist for approval of the lightweight fill
to be used.
Over wood decks one ply of sheathing paper must be used under
the base felt next to the deck.
The specifications in this section require the use of a nailable base
felt. Use nails or fasteners appropriate to the type of deck.
Smooth and Gravel - Surfaced Systems, Four -Ply Roof
Membranes: Using Manville GlasBase or Ventsulation and
starting at the low edge of the roof, start with an 18" width. The
following felts are to be applied full width, lapping each felt 2" over
the preceding one. Nail the laps 9" o.c. and, down the longitudinal

width. The following felts are to be applied full width, lapping each
felt 2" over the preceding one. Nail the laps at 9" centers and down
the longitudinal center of each felt, place 2 rows of nails with the
rows spaced approximately 11" apart and the nails, staggered with
those in the adjacent row, on approximately 18" centers.
Over the in -place base felt, using Manville GlasPly Premier or
GlasPly IV and starting at the low edge of the roof, apply one 18"
wide sheet, then over that, a full 36" wide sheet. The following felts
are to be applied full width, overlapping the preceding felt by 19" so
that at least 2 plies of felt cover the base felt at all locations.
Install each ply felt so that it will be firmly and uniformly set, without
voids, into the hot asphalt, within 25 °F of the asphalt's EVT, applied
just before the felt at a nominal uniform rate of 23 lbs. per square
over the entire surface. Finish the entire surface with a uniform
coating of the selected surfacing or flood the surface with the
appropriate asphalt, at an approximate rate of 60 lbs. per square,
and while it is still hot embed therein an acceptable gravel at the
rate of approximately 400 lbs. per square or an acceptable slag at a
rate of 300 lbs. per square.
Mineral - Surfaced Cap Sheet Systems
Four -Ply Roof Membranes: Using Manville GlasBase or Ventsula-
tion and starting at the low edge of the roof, start with a 12" width.
The following felts are to be applied full width, lapping each felt 2"
over the preceding one. Nail the laps 9" o.c., and down the longi-
tudinal center of each felt place two rows of nails with the rows
spaced approximately 11" apart and the nails staggered with those
in the adjacent row, on approximately 18" centers.
Over the in place base felt, using Manville GlasPly Premier or
GlasPly IV and starting at the low edge of the roof, apply one 18"
wide sheet, then over that, a full 36" wide sheet. The following felts
are to be applied full width, overlapping the preceding felt by 19" so
that at least 2 plies of felt cover the base felt at all locations. Finish
the surface with GlasKap fiber glass mineral surfaced cap sheet.
