Cold roofs should be designed in deep snow alpine areas. 5. Valleys — Any valleys formed by projections such as dormers or roof direction changes are likely to trap more snow and cause larger ice dams. 6. Exposure — In the U.S., a northern exposure or shaded areas will generally contribute to larger ice dams. While gutters may make it easier for an ice darn to start, large dams can occur on roots with no gutters. Removing snow from a root edge may not prevent ice dam formation, but may shift the location of the ice dam. Under certain conditions a darn can form at the edge of the remaining snow. Grace Ice & Water Shield must be placed directly on the structural deck, never directly on insulation. Remove dust, dirt, loose nails or other protrusions. On reroofing, remove all shingles, felts and nails to expose a clean, dry deck. Do not apply directly to fluted deck. 6. Masonry or concrete surfaces must be primed with Bituthene Primer P -3000 et the rate of 250 to 350 Sq. ft. per gallon Or Bituthene Water -Based Primer at the rate Of 500.600 sq. It, per gallon. C. For retrofit where the membrane is in place, apply a new layer of it directly over the Old membrane. Patch damaged deck areas. D. Metal drip edges or wood starter shingles shall be placed over the membrane. 3,02 Installation A. Cut the membrane into 10' to 15' lengths and reroll, feel back 1 to 2 feet of release paper, align the membrane On the lower edge of the roof and place the first 1 t0 2 feet. Pull the release paper under the mem• brans and continue to peel it from the membrane. Press or roll the membrane in place 10 assure full adherence to the deck. For valley and ridge applications, peel back the release paper, center the sheet over the valley or ridge, drape and press it into place working from the center of the valley or ridge outward in each direction. For valleys, apply membrane starting at the low point and work upwarda. End laps must be at least 6 "; side tans at least 31/2". This direct nail -on system shall be limited to installations of 75 feet above existing grade. 2. 1 Vanguard 11 Flat concrete tile is 16 1/2" long by 13 1/8" wide and 1 1 /0" in thickness at the butt end. Each tile has 1 3/8" interlocking side lap. The average weight of a tile is 12 1/2 pounds. 3. Installation: Each tile is attached, to a fully sheathed 19/32" or 5/8" thick sheathing grade plywood deck covered with a 43 pound asphalt Impregnated felt, with two 10d common hot dip galvanized steel nails. The nails are driven through the 3/16" diameter nail holes to within 1/16" of the surface. Each course of tile is installed utilizing a 3" head lap. 4. QualLty Control The manufacturer shall retain the services of an independent testing laboratory to maintain quality control. Test shall be performed on a minimum of five tiles during production of domestic tile for strength according to Section 3403 of the South Florida Building Code and for moisture absorption according , to ASTM C-4. Test samples shall be selected by a laboratory according to ASTM D- 3665 --82. Results shall be submitted to Dade County Product Control Suction every ninety days.
