ASCE7 -88 CALCULATION METHOD
FOR GARAGE DOOR
DESIGN LOADS
The charts included with this cover page help calculate the design
wind loads as determined using the American Society of Civil
Engineers Code ASCE7 -88 for use with garage doors. The charts are
divided between single car garage doors (up to 9'W x 8'H) and
double car garage doors (up to 16'W x 7'H).
1. Determine the garage door size as a single car door (up to 9'W
x 8'H) or double car door (up to 16'W x 7'H).
2. Measure the "Mean Roof Height" of the building. The mean roof
height is measured as the average height of the roof, not the__
peak of the roof. The eave height may be used for a roof
slope of less than 10 °.
3. With the door size and mean roof height known, the appropriate
calculation chart can be used.
4. Determine the "Minimum Building Dimension ". For example, a
building (or house) with a 80' x 30' floor plan, has a minimum
building dimension of 30'.
5. Measure the distance from the corner of the building to the
nearest edge of the door opening. The nearer the door opening
to a corner, the higher the negative design wind load. The
corner wind zone of a building is defined as 100 of the
minimum building dimension or 40a of the mean roof height,
whichever is smaller, but not less than 3 feet or 40 of the
minimum building dimension.
6. The wind load can now be determined. For example a single car
garage door is to be installed in a house with a mean roof
height of 15' or less and a 80' x 30' floor plan. The door
opening is located 2' from a corder. The design wind loads
are (using the charts): +39.9 PSF and -43.5 PSF.

This approves overhead door 16' -0 wide x 6 -6 thru 7' -0 high with G -60 galvanized steel
skin and baked on polyester top coat.
The door shall be constructed and reinforced as detailed in the approved drawing
#101217.

Use:
The door is approved for a design pressure of +20psf & -24psf with horizontal
reinforcement (page 1) +43psf & -48psf with horizontal and vertical reinforcement (page
2). The door passed the impact and cyclic tests, therefore it does not require protection
devices. The door shall meet the burglary security requirements of Section
3603.2(c)2(aa) of the South Florida Building Code. The door operating mechanism (not
included in this approval) shall be certified by Underwriters Laboratories or other
recognized agency.
3. Installation:
The door shall be installed as shown on drawing #101217. Wood in contact with
concrete or cement shall be treated with an approved preservative as set forth in
paragraph 2913.2(a)1 or shall be a durable specie as defined in subparagraph
2913.2(a)6(aa) of the South Florida Building Code. Installation of 2" x 6" wood jam
requires a 1 / 4 x 3 tapcon with 1" 0 x'/, thick washer at 9" o/c for a 16' -0 wide door
with a minimum embedment of 1 into concrete or grout filled concrete block.

4. Conditions of Use:
Application for building permit shall be accompanied by duplicate prints of the approved
drawing #101217 bearing the approval stamp, Notice of Acceptance number and date by
the Dade County Product Control Section along with computations prepared by a
qualified Florida professional engineer or architect verifying the adequacy of the
installation of the door at each site. The shop drawings shall bear the signature of the
architect or engineer with the following statement:
"The supporting structure has been designed for the forces shown on the approved
manufacturer's drawings."
Application for building permit for replacement doors shall be accompanied by duplicate
prints of the approved drawing #101217 bearing the approval stamp, Notice of
Acceptance number and date by the Dade County Product Control Section. Also the
Building Official must be satisfied that the proposed installation meets the use of Section
2 above.
5. Identification:
All approved products shall be permanently labeled with the manufacturer's name, city,
state and the following statement: "Dade County Product Control Approved." Also a
warning note shall be permanently stamped in each door advising the owner or tenant
that the door will not offer hurricane protection unless two vertical reinforcement are
properly installed.

1. Extension of Acceptance may be considered after a new application has been filed and
the supporting data, test report no older than ten (10) years, have been re- evaluated.
All reports of re- testing shall bear the seal, signature and date of an engineer registered in
the State of Florida.
Any revision or change in the materials, use, or manufacture of the product or process
shall automatically be cause for termination, unless prior approval is granted for
revisions or change.
3. Any unsatisfactory performance of this product or process or a change in Code provisions
shall be grounds for re- evaluation.
5. The Notice of Acceptance number preceded by the words Dade County, Florida, and
followed by the expiration date may be displayed in advertising literature. If any portion
of the Notice of Acceptance is displayed, then it shall be done in its entirety.
6. A copy of this approval as well as approved drawings and other documents, where it
applies, shall be provided to the applicant by the manufacturer of his distributors and
shall be available for inspection at the job site at all time. The prints need not be
re- sealed by the engineer.
