PRODUCT BENEFITS: SOMAY "ROOF
MASTIC" will seal, waterproof, windproof
and protect practically any smooth,
structurally sound roof surface that was
properly designed with positive drainage,
when it is applied at the proper thickness
according to these instructions. TWO
VERY THICK COATS of liquid SOMAY
"ROOF MASTIC" must be applied so that
they dry and cure to a virtually impene-
trable, flexible, seamless, waterproofing,
protective membrane.
SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" is available in
"White ", which reflects 83% of the heat from
the sun to help keep buildings much cooler
and has Energy Star® Certification, as well
as Crystal Clear and several popular roof
colors including Sun Beige (Tan),
Terracotta, Modem Ivory, Spanish Tile Red
and Machinery Gray.
SURFACE PREPARATION: The secret of a
successful painting job is proper surface
preparation. Surfaces MUST be free of
anything which could adversely affect the
adhesion of this coating to the surface,
including loose, scaling, peeling, blistering,
chipping, cracking, flaking, chalking or
powdering paint; dust, dirt, sand, soot,
grease, oil, tar, wax, soap film or petro-
leum -based residue; lye, lime, chlorine, salt,
calcimine, efflorescence, or any other
chemically reactive substance; and must be
completely free of all mold, fungus, mildew
or any other growing organism of any kind.
Infirm surfaces MUST be made firm.

Product No. 842
High - pressure (min. 2,500 P.S.I.) water
should be used to thoroughly clean all
surfaces prior to the coating application.
Mildew and similar growths MUST be
killed with a 2% chlorine solution. Rinse
with clean water; allow to dry.
PRIME SURFACES: On concrete or tile
surfaces, and all other surfaces where a
Crystal Clear coating is desired, apply
SOMAY Product No. 777 SOMAY "PST ".
On asphalt -based roof surfaces in good
condition, such as asphalt or fiberglass
shingles, roll roofing, tar paper, etc. on
which you do NOT want a Crystal Clear
finish, apply SOMAY Product No. 7751,
SOMAY "PRIME & SEAL ". Maximum
spreading rate of primers is 200 sq.ft. /gal.,
but will be considerably less (maybe only
100 sq.ft. /gal.) on very porous surfaces.
If applying any paint or coating to asphalt
shingles that are very old, brittle and /or
curling, apply a coat of SOMAY Product No.
789, SOMAY "SHINGLE PREP ", to make
the old shingles flexible so they will lie flat.

APPLICATION: SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC"
MUST BE APPLIED FULL STRENGTH as it
is supplied by the manufacturer. NEVER
THIN, DILUTE or ADULTERATE with any
other material. Any thinning will reduce the
percentage of solids, which will adversely
affect the adhesiveness, the hiding, the
sealing ability and the durability of the
applied coating. Stir product thoroughly
before and frequently during application.
Apply only to properly prepared, primed, dry
surfaces, without undue delay between the
application of each coat.
APPLICATION RATE: To develop a
waterproofing membrane with SOMAY
"ROOF MASTIC ", a MINIMUM OF TWO (2)
full coats, each 20 mils (.020 inch or .0508
cm) thick MUST BE APPLIED, providing a
TOTAL MINIMUM DRY FILM THICKNESS
for both coats of 40 mils (.040 inch or .1016
cm). On a very smooth, non - porous
surface, one (1) gallon of SOMAY "ROOF
MASTIC" may cover up to, but never more
than, 50 sq. ft. with a 20 mils thick
coating; two (2) gallons may cover up to 50
sq. ft. with the required 40 mils thickness,
so a minimum of four (4) gallons (14.14L)
will be required for two coats for every 100
sq. ft. (9.29 sq.m.).
APPLICATION METHOD: On residential
roofs, an easy, practical and effective
application method is to use a broom or
brush with long, very soft bristles, laying the
SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" onto the surface
to create a continuous, seamless, water-
proofing membrane. On larger roof
surfaces, SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" may
equipment with a standard tip size (.019 to
.023) normally used to apply a high quality
acrylic latex coating.
WEATHER CONSIDERATIONS: Before
application, KEEP FROM FREEZING.
Apply only at temperatures above 50° F.
(10° C.). Apply only when the weather will
be fair for a sufficiently long time for the
coating to dry. Do not apply late in the
afternoon or early evening when heavy dew
could develop before the coating dries. A
heavy rainstorm could wash the coating off
during the first few hours after application if
it has not dried thoroughly.
DRYING TIME: Drying time will vary
depending on both ambient and surface
temperature, humidity, wind or air
movement, exposure to sunlight, thickness
of coating applied, etc. Under ideal drying
conditions, SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC"
forms a dew or light shower - resistant
membrane in approx. 30 to 60 minutes after
application, and dries sufficiently in approx.
twenty -four (24) hours to permit the
application of the second coat of SOMAY
"ROOF MASTIC ". A longer drying time will
be required if the surface being coated is
not completely dry, if the air or surface
temperature is below 50° F., if the relative
humidity is higher than 90 %, if the air is
calm, if the surface is not exposed to direct
sunlight, or if too thick a coat (more than 20
mils) is applied.
CLEAN UP: Using clean water, IMME-
DIATELY FLUSH SPILLS OR DRIPS
FROM SHRUBBERY, WALKWAYS,
DRIVEWAYS, ETC., BEFORE SOMAY
"ROOF MASTIC" IS ALLOWED TO SET
UP. Clean hands, brushes, rollers, tools
and other equipment immediately after use
in warm, soapy water.

Roof Mastic - Surface Preparation
SURFACE PREPARATION
The surface to which SOMAY ROOF MASTIC is to be applied MUST be thoroughly clean
and completely free of anything which could adversely affect the adhesion of the coating to

with, for example, a 2 %-3% chlorine solution in water (e.g. "Clorox" diluted 1 :1 with water),
followed by a thorough rinse with clean water. Note: Protect landscaping from chlorine runoff.
Note: Use caution if /and when cleaning a shingle, tar paper, roll roofing or similar fragile roof
surface, so as not to damage the roof surface.
DRY THE SURFACE:

SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" should not be applied directly over a steL Lferwus met tl) surface • • • unless the steel has been previously primed, painted or "galvanized ". • "• • •
Prior to the application of SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC ", do NOT use a rust "Reformer", a rust
"Converter", a rust "phosphatizing" solution or similar process over the rusty areas of a steel
surface. These are usually acidic products, which will be incompatible with any acrylic
coating. SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" is a 100% acrylic resin -based coating, because acrylic

resins are the most resistant to degradation from the ultraviolet rays from sunlight. However,
acrylic coatings should be applied to surfaces that are neutral to slightly alkaline, but not over
an acid contaminated surface.
Therefore, when applying SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" to older, deteriorating, previously
painted or galvanized, flat or corrugated steel (ferrous metal) panels that are partially or lightly
rusted, we recommend:
Surface Preparation:
The loose, flaking, or chipping rust MUST be removed by hand cleaning such as
scraping or wire brushing to be sure there is a firm surface on which to apply SOMAY
"ROOF MASTIC" . It is NOT necessary to remove rust which is firmly or soundly
adhered to the steel substrate.
Primer.
(A) Then "spot" prime the rusty areas with SOMAY /Carboline "Rustbond", a Clear,
100% Solids, 2- component, 1:1 mix ratio, polyamido amine epoxy containing corrosion
inhibitors, which serves as a universal primer /tie-coat. Coverage is 786 sq. ft. per gallon
(or 19.26 sq.m. /3.79L), at 2 mils (50 microns) dry film thickness; or
(B) Prime the bare, rust -free areas with SOMAY Product No. 636, Ferrous Metal Primer
meeting U. S. Federal Govemment Specification TT- P-636; coverage will be
approximately 300 sq.ft. /gal. (27.87 sq.m./ 3.79L) at 2 mils (50 microns) dry film
thickness.
Either of these coatings can be topcoated when dry, normally in approx. 12 hours @ 75
F.
SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" can be applied directly to clean, weathered, galvanized steel
surfaces, or to primed or previously painted steel surfaces, and directly over a ferrous metal
coating as in (A) and (B) above that is dry and cured.
REPAIR CRACKS, OPEN SEAMS, etc.
It is more efficient and economical to develop a seamless waterproofing membrane with
SOMAY "ROOF MASTIC" when it is applied to surfaces which are very smooth. Therefore,
all large, open seams, cracks, holes and similar irregularities should be filled and made very
smooth using SOMAY Product No. 992, SOMAY Elastomeric "PATCH & SEAL ". Since
"PATCH & SEAL" is White in color, it should not be used on any surface where a Crystal
Clear finish is desired.
NOTE: It is NOT necessary to completely fill in the cut -outs between thelabs of shirng if• •....
