Coal tar systems may be applied over dead flat or very minor slope applications. All coal tar systems require surfacing of gravel or slag. Koppers Industries, Inc. has been supplying coal tar pitch and bitumen products to the roofing industry for better than fifty years. Coal tar pitch roof systems have some unique qualities due to the low softening point of the matsrial. Coal tar pitch built -up systems may be constructed of organic tarred felts, standard fiberglass felts or coal tar impregnated fiberglass felts. Street Miami, FL 33166 Dear Mr. Cardozo: This is to confirm our telephone discussion regarding the abbreviations and terms used in Classified Roofing Systems. A copy of the explanation of these terms as it appears in the Guide Information preceding the Roofing Systems category is attached. With respect to the roof deck description the reference to noncombustible (NC) limits that system only to noncombustible decks. The reference to combustible (C) with a suffix related to minimum thickness of the combustible deck also indicates it is suitable for use over noncombustible deck. If there is need for further clarification, please contact me. Very truly yours, Kenneth Rhodes Associate Managing Engineer Engineering Services, Dept. 3011 333 Pfingsten Road Northbrook. See individual Classifi- cations for designations and application rates for cements and coatings. Unless otherwise required, granules or sand may be optionally applied to any coating. COMBINATION HOT AND COLD SYSTEMS These roofing systems are composed of asphalt saturated organic felts or asphalt coated glass fiber felts applied with hot roofing asphalt and surfaced with cold application coatings. Some systems are surfaced with mineral surfacings, such as sand or No. 11 roofing granules, which are embedded in the coating. Unless otherwise required, granules or sand may be optionally applied to any coating. See individual Classifications for designations and application rates for coatings and surfacing materials. FLUID APPLIED COATING SYSTEMS These roofing systems are composed of a number of layers or coats of plastic roof coatings. Adequate drying time is allowed between successive layers or coats to form a protective membrane. Some systems may utilize various types of reinforcing filaments embedded in a coating layer while wet. Also, some ms may utilize surfacing materials. See individual Classifications for esignations and application rates for coatings and surfacing materials. MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR SYSTEMS These roofing systems are composed of various types of roofing applications which are specifically limited for installation (recover) over existing roofing systems as specified. These systems may not meet Classification requiremen without being used over existing systems. Recovering may also be accomplis with Classified new construction roofing systems where compatibility has " en determined by test, by empirical data or by known performance prope . of similar matenals to the test methods. The following guidelines are pro '•ed to assist authorities having jurisdiction in determining the suitability o a new construction Roofing System as a recover system. NONCOMBUSTIBLE DECK CONSTRUCTION: 1. Insulated roof systems may be utilized over any type of exi : ng roof system and maintain its new construction rating when the ro deck is noncombustible. 2. Insulated multiple layered hot mopped, cold application or odified bitumen membrane new construction systems with a base ply o Type G1 or Type G2 may be used over any existing roof system amd mai tain its new construction rating when the roof deck is noncombusti e. The insulation may be omitted from the recover system. 3. Uninsulated multiple layered hot mopped, cold application or modified bitumen membrane new construction systems with a base ply of Typ G1 or Type G2 may be used over any existing uninsulated roof system - d maintain its new construction rating when the roof deck is noncom bustible. 4. Spray applied foam systems with minimum 1 -1/2 in. thick foam may be used over any existing roof system and maintain its new construction rating when the roof deck is noncombustible. COMBUSTIBLE DECK CONSTRUCTION: 1. Insulated roof systems Classified for use over combustible deck can be used over any type of existing roof system and maintain its new construction rating. 2. Insulated roof systems Classified for use over noncombustible deck may be used over any type of Class A, B or C existing roof systems. The resultant Class will be the lesser rating of the existing system or the new construction (recover) system. 3. Uninsulated multiple layered hot mopped, cold application or modified bitumen membrane new construction systems with a base ply of Type G1 or Type G2 may be used over any existing uninsulated roof system and maintain its new construction rating. 4. Spray applied foam systems with minimum 1 -1/2 in. thick foam Classified for use over noncombustible deck may be used over any type of Class A, B or C existing roof system. The resultant Class will be the lesser rating of the existing system or the new construction (recover) system. SINGLE PLY MEMBRANE SYSTEMS (INCLUDES MODIFIED BITUMEN MEMBRANES) These roofing systems are composed of various types of membranes (such as EPDM, PVC, CSPE and modified bitumen) which are either ballasted, fully adhered or mechanically attached. UL Classified insulation may be utilized, as well as various coatings, splicing adhesives, lap sealants and caulking materials. See individual Classifications for designations of products and application rates for various components. Unless otherwise required, granules or sand may be optionally applied to any coating. SPRAY APPLIED FOAM AND COATING SYSTEMS These roofing systems are composed of a foam, formed by the simultaneous spraying of two hquid components to a nominal thickness, covered with a cold application coating system to form a protective covering. Surfacing materials, such as sand or No. 11 roofing granules, may be embedded in the coating while wet. See individual Classifications for designation of products, foam thickness and application rates for the coatings involved. Unless otherwise required, granules or sand may be optionally applied to any coating. Where indicated in individual Classifications, specific systems have also been Classified for impact resistance in accordance with UL2218, "Impact Resistance of Prepared Roof Covering Materials". LOOK FOR MARK ON PRODUCT ROOF COVERING MATERIALS (TEVT) ROOFING SYSTEMS (TGFU)— Continued The Classifications for impact resistance are expressed as Class 1, 2, 3 or 4, which relate to a system's ability to withstand impacts from 1 -1/4, 1 -1/2, 1 -3/4 and 2 in. diameter steel balls respectively. The acceptance criteria used for establishing the Classification is the system's ability to absorb these impacts without visible evidence of tearing, fracturing, cracking, splitting, rupture, crazing or other opening which would expose foam to the effects of weather. The effects of weathering prior to the impact resistance testing these systems have not been investigated. OTHER SYSTEMS These systems cover products such as building units used in specific Class A, B or C roofing systems. Building units may consist of composite insulation boards, metal faced insulation panels or insulating material, faced on top and bottom with metal or plastic reinforced glass fiber skins which are intended for direct application to rafters or purlins. The structural aspects of these materials have not been evaluated. See in r ividual Classifications for the specific system details. The basi ndards used to investigate products in tegory are ANSI - 90 "Tests For Fire Resistance of Roof Covering Materials". So of the ucts specified in these systems are covered in Standard UL 55A - "Ma 'als or Built -Up Roof Coverings" ABBREVIATIONS AND TERMS USED IN CLASSIFIED ROOFING SYSTEMS DESCRIBED FOR INDIVIDUAL MANUFACTURERS Decks - Noncombustible v NC; combustible (includes noncom- bustible a C. This inspection was performed on December 14, 1998. This inspection was authorized verbally on December 14, 1998 by a representative of Allied Roofing Industries. The scope of services for this project were the following: 1. Sampling of Roofmg Materials 2. Laboratory Analysis 3. Report Preparation En Inc.-- Survey - Project Number: LG98 -1286 -- Pa e 2 LG Engineering Services, Inc Limited Asbestos Survey (Rood Project g The bulk sampling procedures used for the collection of suspect materials first required the establishment of homogeneous sampling areas, which are defined as areas of materials of the same type and applied during the same general time period. The homogeneous sampling areas were then examined and representative samples of materials were obtained. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has published guidelines and recommendations for obtaining samples of asbestos - containing materials. These guidelines were followed during our survey, where appropriate. Additionally, samples of these materials are obtained at our discretion based on past experience. All of the roofmg materials sampled at the time of our inspection were placed in individual plastic container prior to transporting them to the laboratory. These samples were clearly identified, both on the container and the field data sheet for future reference. The client is made aware that although the areas from which the samples were obtained were patched with a temporary patch only, there is always a chance that the roof may leak. LG Engineering Services, Inc. assumes no responsibility for any leaks as a result of this survey. LIMITATIONS The analysis of bituminous roofmg material by Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) in conjunction with Dispersion Staining is accurate only on a qualitative basis and only when the laboratory reports that asbestos was detected in the samples analyzed. A laboratory analysis report which states that no asbestos was detected in the sample does not necessarily exclude the possibility that asbestos may be present in the homogeneous area represented by the sample analyzed. Furthermore, a quantitative appraisal of asbestos content in a bituminous roofmg sample is extremely subjective and a high interlaboratory standard deviation of analysis results on side -by -side samples is common. It is the material composition and production processes used in the manufacture of some bituminous roofmg material which create problems for analysis using Polarized Light Microscopy for asbestos identification and quantification. We have endeavored to observe the existing conditions within the area surveyed using generally accepted procedures. Regardless of the thoroughness of a survey, there is LG Engineering Services, Inc. -- Limited Asbestos Survey (Roo) — Project Number: LG98 -1286 -- Page 3 always the possibility that some areas containing asbestos were overlooked, inaccessible, or different from those at specific sample locations. Therefore, conditions at every location may not be as anticipated and as summarized in the report. In addition, renovation or demolition may uncover altered or differing conditions. We recommend that you notify us if any changed conditions are encountered so that we can assess the situation and its impact on the original recommendations. The results and conclusions contained in this report pertain to conditions which were observed at the time of the survey. No representations or assumptions are made as to the nature of past conditions or future occurrences from this report. The survey was designed to assist the roofmg contractor and his representatives in locating asbestos- containing materials (ACM). Under no circumstances is this survey and the quantities found in the survey to be used for bid purposes.
