Present Use: Barry University Main Library i. General Description, Type of Construction, Size, Number of Stories, and Special Features. Four story, approximately 90' x 120' = +/- 10800sf / floor, with a total of approximately 43,200sf. Structure is poured -In -place concrete waffle slab using 36 "x36" waffle forms approximately 16" deep. The slabs are supported on 16" square poured concrete columns spaced on a 30' x 30' grid. Special features include 4 projection structures, 3 of which serve as exit stairs and one at the south east corner serves as office and library program space. Additions to original structure: To the west Lehman Hall, a 3 story building housing the Wm. Lehman Library, classrooms and offices shares a common wall with the Msgr. William Barry Memorial Library. These structures are separated with a continuous expansion joint and both structures appear to be independent from each other. 2. PRESENT CONDITION OF STRUCTURE a. General alignment (not good, fair, poor, explain if significant) 1. Bulging None observed 2. Settlement None observed 3. Defections None observed 4. Expansion None observed 5. Contraction None observed b. Portion showing distress (Note, beams, columns, structural walls, floors, roofs, other) At the 4 projected structures at approximately 1' to 2' down from the top of the parapet wall on both the north and south face of the structure there is a crack in the stucco finish. This crack has been raked out and filled with a properly designed structural sealant to avoid reoccurring cracks. c. Surface conditions — describe general conditions of finishes, noting cracking, spalling, peeling, signs of moisture penetration & stains. Exterior of building is painted stucco or natural stone. Paint is aged but in good condition. Stone joints are solid and full. There are several locations in stair halls that show signs of plaster spalling, most likely associated with the crack referenced in item b. above. Also adjacent to some vertical window strips there are signs of water infiltration, most likely caused by aged caulking between window frames and the stucco wall. University maintenance continues to patch these areas as they occur providing a sound surface condition throughout the Library. d. Cracks — note location in significant members. Identify crack size as HAIRLINE if barely dissemble; FINE if less than 1mm in width: MEDIUM if between 1 and 2 mm in width; WIDE if over 2 mm. No cracks were observed in any structural members. e. General extent of deterioration — cracking or spalling of concrete or masonry; oxidation of metals; rot or borer attack in wood. No deteroriation was observed in any of these items. Previous patching or repairs: See paragraph 2.b. above for stucco (cement plaster) repairs. Nature of present loading indicate residential, commercial, other estimate magnitude. Library loading is generally applied throughout. Book stacks are located in the upper three floors of the Library. Book stacks are spaced with an accessible face of shelf to face of shelf dimension facilitating a lighter than anticipated library floor loadin 3. INSPECTIONS a. FLOOR AND ROOF SYSTEM a. Root 1. Describe (flat, slope, type roofing, type roof deck, condition. Roof deck is poured concrete. The roofing system is sloped to 10 roof drains each serving approximately 1 /10 of the roof area. An expansion curb extends across the roof in an east/west direction and is located approximately 2/5 of the length of the building from the north face. The area north of the expansion joint is served by 4 roof drains and the area south of the expansion joint is served by 6 roof drains. The roof is well drained and dry. Rooting is a built up system with a modified bitumen cap sheet impregnated with white granules. The white granules are generally warn from the cap sheet due to normal exposure to the elements. The roofing system is in good condition. 2. Note water tanks, cooling towers, air conditioning equipment, signs, other heavy equipment and condition of support There is a cooling tower located svmmetrically between the southern 4 roof drains and it's overflow/drain line is piped to the southeastern most drain. The cooling, tower structural support is in good condition. At the north end of the roof approximately in line with the 2 most northerly roof drains is located a louvered air relief structure that is curb mounted. This structure is in good condition. 3.
