It meets the • requirements of NFPA Standard 72A and is UL Listed per Standard 864. State -of- the -art solid state circuitry pro- vides increased protection from transients and noise while increasing reliability. DETECTION A special feature of this unit is the ability to differentiate between two -wire smoke detectors and contact type alarm actuators on the same detection circuit, simplifying instal- lation and reducing wiring costs. The suppression module has two independent alarm detection circuits which are wired for Class "B" operation. Up to 5 Fenwal 24 VDC ioni- zation or photoelectric smoke detectors may be connected to each circuit. Contact devices such as Fenwal's DETECT -A -FIRE® heat detectors or manual pull stations also may be connected in the same circuit. Total lead wire resistance of 25 ohms allows extended detection circuit wire runs. A single smoke detector in either of the two detection cir- cuits initiates a Pre -Alarm signal. When a smoke detector in both loops of the control unit is in alarm, a Pre - Release signal is generated and time delay circuit, if used, will acti- vate. When the time delay is satisfied, agent is released IRE PROTECTION CONTROL UNIT P/N 30- 222000 -001 DS30 -048 Effective: March, 1988 and a continuous release signal is triggered unless the system abort feature has been enabled. A contact device in either detection circuit will trigger the release signals releasing the extinguishant. ALARMS A single three -level alarm output circuit is Class "B" super- vised and operates polarized signalling devices. An inde- pendent dry Form C auxiliary relay contact is associated with each output function. An Alarm Silence Switch located on the module board will silence the alarm signal output; however, a subsequent alarm will override the Alarm Silence Switch. EXTINGUISHING AGENT RELEASE The Control Unit drives either initiator or 1 -1/2" pilot re- lease valve so the unit is compatible with either Fenwal Modular or Central Storage extinguishing systems. Re- lease circuit will actuate either two electro- explosive in- itiators (Fenwal P/N 31- 199932 -00X) or one 24 VDC ac- tuator on ASC (Fenwal P/N 31- 19203X -00X) with 1-1/2" pilot release valve. WARNING: Release circuit is not compatible with Fenwal P/N 31- 19203X XXX 2" Pilot Release Valve Tanks and 31- 19204X -XXX 3" Burst Disc Valve Tanks. ABORT SWITCH A Supervised Abort Switch is mounted on the Control Unit door. While the button is depressed, agent release is pre- vented but alarms continue to sound. A contact device ac- tuation overrides the Abort Switch and time delays to re- lease agent. TIME DELAY Control Unit can be prggrammed for 20 or 40 seconds delay between pre - release and agent release. Abort switch actuation shall not prevent time out of delay. Re- lease of abort to normal position shall result in agent re- lease if panel is in pre - release, time delay has elapsed and panel has not been properly reset. SUPERVISION The Control Unit is fully supervised. Supervision includes but is not limited to the following: • AC Power • abort switch circuit • battery voltage • releasing outputs • battery connections • ground fault • alarm detection circuits • pressure switch (NC) • alarm output The Control Unit includes four indicators visible with the enclosure door closed (AC Power, Alarm, Alarm silence, System trouble). Additional LED trouble indicators are located on the module printed circuit board as shown in Figure 1. TROUBLE INDICATION Trouble conditions result in an audible signal and illumina- tion of an LED annunciator on the affected circuit. The au- dible signal may be silenced by the Trouble - Silence Switch on the module panel. Fault isolation is facilitated by eight trouble indicators and a trouble ringback. A trouble condition activates a set of dry Form C contacts. POWER SUPPLY The Control Unit contains a 24 VDC regulated power sup- ply with overload protection provided by electronic current limiting. A fuse is utilized in the battery circuit only. A Class II design transformer protects AC input. The control module contains a built -in battery charger and 1 set of 1.2 ampere /hour sealed lead acid batteries housed within the control unit enclosure. A trouble signal is generated if battery voltage drops below acceptable levels. ENCLOSURE The panel enclosure is rugged 18 gauge steel and is painted beige. A steel door is held closed by a key lock. All switches and indicators, with the exception of Manual Release and Abort Switch, are located behind the locked cover. 2 RELEASE CIRCUIT CONFIGURATIONS FIGURE 1A One 24VDC Actuator P/N 31- 194135 -001 or 31- 194135 -002 Term. 9 to 10 FIGURE 1B Configuration with Release Circuit Used to Fire Initiators P/N 31- 199932 -OOX Initiator Circuit Supervisory Current: 2.5mA. APPROVED, ULC LISTED DESCRIPTION The dual chamber ionization smoke detector senses both visible and invisible particles of combustion and is designed for two-wire system operation. 360° smoke entry characteristic permits maximurrrsmoke response from any direction. A unique sensing chamber design permits operation in air velocities up to 2000 FPM. To assure that the detector is functioning, a pulsing LED (six flashes per minute) allows for visual super- vision of the detector. Under alarm condition, the LED lights continuously at full brilliance. A unique gated output circuit design provides im- proved stability and transient suppression. Special signal processing techniques verify the presence of smoke before the detector will alarm. Non - polarized circuit connections make installation wiring quick, easy and foolproof. The detector head is installed into the base with a simple twist -lock ac- tion. A locking feature Is provided for vandal resistant security. A test magnet can provide a full functional test which simulates the effect of smoke (approx- imately 1°/0 per foot obscuration) entering the sens- ing chamber. In addition, the actual sensitivity of the detector may be monitored with a 10 megohm meter without the necessity of removing the detector. Detector sensitivity Is easily adjusted should conditions ip warrant a change from the pre -set calibration. An insect screen protecting the chamber area is used to avoid potential nuisance alarms. Optional bases are available for supplementary relay, and/or remote alarm LED application. These photoelectric smoke detectors will respond to a broad range of both flaming and smoldering fire conditions. Improved long -term stability and smoke entry characteristics are achieved through the use of a custom MSI integrated circuit that features multi -stage amplifica- tion. These models operate over an 18 to 32VDC range (24V nominal) with compatible control units. EMI /RFI noise immunity up to 20 volts /meter assures virtual elimination of false alarms from elec- trical interference. High signal -to -noise ratio permits a significant reduction in light baffling, thereby improving smoke entry characteristics while re- ducing nuisance alarms. The Fenwal photoelectric smoke detec- tors are therefore ideal for fire alarm and suppression systems service. Detector sensitivity is nominally set at 3 %/ft. and the sensitivity range can be measured in place using a commercially available peak and hold voltmeter. Voltage readings found to be within set parameters are acceptable for normal field applications. Three separate detection identifications are required for alarm confirmation. This three level detection sequence reduces nui- sance alarms. Each identification is made at either 2 or 4 second intervals as indicated in Table I. Digital storage of the previous identifications provides positive and reliable detection. Companion models PSD 7126, and 7131 include a thermal de- tector with a 135 °F set point. Operation of the contact -type ther- mal detector is independent of smoke detector circuitry. Functional testing is accomplished by means of a magnet which causes an alarm condition. This simulates the UL 6% smoke test. Under alarm condition, the pulsing LED will switch to a steady red illumination. Installation is both simple and fast because of screw type connec- tions and the nonpolarized detector feature. The detector is fitted to the base by a twist -to -lock action. A removable locking tab secures the head to the base to provide a degree of vandal resistance. An extra fine mesh insect screen protecting the chamber area reduces potential nuisance alarms. Photoelectric detectors may be interchanged with Fenwal ioniza- tion detectors and rate compensated DETECT -A -FIRE® heat detectors when using multi- function base configurations. Op- tional bases are shown in Table II. TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS Input voltage range Max. These containers hold from 18 to 196 pounds of Halon and are equipped with a burst disc type discharge valve, a replaceable initiator well, a screen assembly, safety plug and cable assem- bly. Each ASC has two identical bos- mounted check valves which will accept a pressure gauge (standard), an optional pres- sure switch (see Fenwal Data Sheet 31 -016). Either of these check valves may be used for recharging the container. Initiator assemblies must be ordered for each ASC. See Fenwal Data Sheet 31 -003 for ordering information. OPERATION The container is discharged when the initiator is actuated to rupture the burst disc valve. INSTALLATION The container must be rigidly mounted in position with the valve down. Fenwal mounting brackets provide a secure means for wall mounting containers. A lifting ring on the ASC provides a means for raising the container to its mounting location. After the container is secured in place, remove the safety plug and connect the rest of the piping and nozzle specified in the system drawing. Retain the safety plug for use when recondi- tioning the container and whenever a filled container is moved. MAINTENANCE The following inspection and /or maintenance procedures should be scheduled as listed below or performed upon the occurrence of any event which might affect the reliability of the system. A. Quarterly Inspection 1. Check the pressure gauges of each agent storage con- tainer. If the pressure is Tess than 325 psig at 70 °F (22.9 Kg /cm at 21 °C) the container should be removed and carefully inspected by qualified personnel. It should then be reconditioned, recharged or replaced as its condition indicates. Pressure varies with temperature. In the range of 55 °F - 85 °F (12.7 °C - 29.4 °C), this change is approx- imately 3 psi per degree F (.38 Kg /cm / °C). FENW PROTECTION SYSTEMS DIVISION • • FEATURES • 180° AND 360° PATTERNS • FIVE PIPE SIZES — .5 TO 2.0 NPT • 51 ORIFICE OPENINGS • FLUSH MOUNTED • HORIZONTAL DISCHARGE PATTERN DESCRIPTION These nozzles are used in Fenwal Halon 1301 Fire Suppres- sion Systems to disperse Halon uniformly throughout the hazard area. Patterns direct discharged Halon parallel to the ceiling thus minimizing the possibility of disturbance to ceil- ing tiles and objects within the room. Nozzles are available to discharge in either 180° or 360° patterns, depending on loca- tion within the hazard area. A selection of orifices is available for each nozzle size to provide correct sizing for appropriate agent distribution. Nozzles are constructed of aluminum with a textured finish. Forged steel bushings adapt 0.5 NPT nozzles to 0.25 and 0.375 NPT pipes. See Ordering Information for sizes and part numbers. DESIGN /INSTALLATION The nozzles are equipped with female National Pipe Threads and are typically installed as close to the ceiling as possible to provide an equal distribution of agent throughout the pro- tected area. Nozzles should be mounted in a downward ver- tical position only. The placement of the nozzles for adequate coverage to all portions of the hazard area is determined by considering the indicated radial throw of each nozzle. When using large nozzles in an area where smaller nozzles have a sufficient radial throw, care should be used to avoid any un- necessary and unwanted turbulence. ARCHITECT /ENGINEER SPECIFICATION This Halon 1301 Fire Suppression System shall utilize discharge nozzles that distribute the Halon 1301 uniformly throughout the protected area. The discharge pattern shall be such that the Halon is directed parallel to the ceiling. The nozzle shall be Fenwal PN/ 31- 19411X -XXX. Smiley, Jr. ER T IF IC A T I 0 N We affirm that we have observed the construction of the referenc- ed project as far as the structural frame and elements. The results of our inspections are fully documented in our Reports of Materials Engineering Site Inspection No. 1 through No. 43. The basis of our observations are the originally approved official documents which are the Project Manual prepared by Architect/ Engineer of Record: Spillis Candela & Partners, Inc., and permitted plans. These documents include the Special Inspector requirements and Inspection Plan. This certification is limited to the structural frame of the building including primary and secondary framing systems and elements. This certification does not apply to elements such as fire protection, roofing, mechanical /electrical systems, architectural components, site work or other elements not contributing to the capacity of the structural frame. Moreover, it does not include the inspection and /or verification of any safety provisions as required by OSHA or other safety standards which applied during the structural construction period. WLI Order No. 16826.13 1 As Special Inspector of Threshold Buildings, I and /or my duly authorized representative notified the Contractor, Building Official, Architect /Engineer of Record, and the owner of the following: a) Work which was not being done in accordance with the approved official contract documents. b) The use of materials, equipment, or workmanship which did not conform to the official contract documents or which may have caused improper construction which would not have been acceptable. c) The recommended removal or repair of faulty construction or of construction performed without inspection and not capable of being inspected or tested in place. d) Requests for interpretations and clarifications from the Architect /Engineer of Record. Records were maintained recording the construction progress, approvals and /or modifications, observations and inspections, suspect- ed deviations and nonconformances, as well as working conditions. The reports were promptly generated at the end of the period covered and distributed to parties involved. Final inspection was performed on August 11, 1989. To the best of my knowledge, belief and professional judgement based upon our performance of the observations at the scheduled times, and as set forth in the Structural Inspection Plan approved by the enforcing agency, the work was performed in substantial accordance with the official contract documents. E. 2nd Avenue Miami Shores, Florida Re: Barry University - FAA Building SC &P Project No. E -7101 "Video EMT Conduits" Dear Mr. Devaney: As per our conversation yesterday and in full agreement with your request, Spillis Candela & Partners offers you the following: 1. The subject conduits and fittings were out of the scope of our work. Please read attached letter from the Digital Co. 2. It is unfortunate that the installation is not in accordance with our Specifications and truly does not match the quality of the rest of the work. 3. Spillis Candela & Partners, the Architects /Engineers of Record, will accept the installation only because: a. It does comply with the National Electric Code. b. Conduits will be used for video cables only. c. Conduits were installed to comply with the South Florida Building Code (plenum environmental air). d. Video cables could not be obtained in Teflon and routed with the rest of the Teflon wires presently installed in the cable tray. e. Obviously, Barry University benefited monetarily by buying less expensive components for the installation. We hope that the above reasons are satisfactory to you as they are to us. 800 Douglas Entrance Coral Gables Florida 33134-3119 305/444 -4691 FAX 305/447 -3576 Peter J. Spillis, AIA Hilario F. Dear Mr. Becquer: During a telephone conversation with Mr. Ulloa,of Barry University, he requested that I explain to you the conditions under which the EMT conduits, for video cables, were installed in the new FAA building. Here are the facts: 1.-- The number of EMT conduits, their routing and their final positioning were designed by Mr. John Smiley,of Barry University. During this process the conduit routing was changed four times. 2.-- All instructions and specifications were conveyed verbally by Barry University. 3.- Directions during installation were given by Barry University. Basically, the work was supervised by Barry University. 4.- All conduit work performed meets the Nationa3. Electrical Code. S hope this would clarify the conditions under which this installation was done. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
