All nail -on tilt applications having a roof pitch less than 4 " :12" shall be installed over both vertical and horizontal battens ( "Counter - Battens "), as noted in System A. All nail -on tile applications having a roof pitch in excess of 7 " :12" shall be installed over horizontal battens as noted in System 3. For nail -on applications, brass or stainless steel screws for mechanical attachment of tiles shall have a head diameter larger than that of the preformed holes in the tile. 4. System installation shall be in compliance with the systcm,specifications outlined in this Product Control Approval. Nail -on tile shall be attached using one of the tnethods or attachmcnt noted in Table 3 of this Approval. Mortar or adhesive set tile shall be attached using an approved mortar or adhesive noted in this approval, the data of which is noted in Table 4 of this Approval. The method of attachment utilized shall provide sufficient attachment resistance expressed as a moment to meet or exceed the required moment of resistance determined in compliance with Dade County Protocol PA 115 or PA 127. 5. For nail -on tile applications, an cave clip is required on all cave tile. For mortar set applications, the first three courses of tile shall be nailed with not less than one nail per tile. As an alternate, the first three courses of tile shall be applied in mortar over a single layer of minimum 12 ga. wire mesh with square openings of not lass than 3/4" which is mechanically attached t: th+. deck with not less than one roofing nail every 1 W. For mortar or adhesive set tilt applications, a field static uplift test by a Dade County accredited testing agency, in compliance with Dade County Protocol PA 106, shall be required not toss than 30 days offer application to confirm tile adhesion. The results of this testing shall be reported to the Building Official and the installer stating that the application has passed or failed PA 106 testing. If the application fails PA 106 testing, the report shall state which portion of the test was filed; Category 1 (examination for loose tile) or Category 2 (uplift testing of tile). Subsequent to testing, the installer may repair not more than 5% of field area tiles and 10% of perimeter arca (i.e. ridge /rake) tile with approved tile adhesive. The installer shall place an identifiable marking on each repaired tilt for future reference. Any PA 106 re -test shall not include any marked tile. 7. For mortar or adhesive sot tie applications, 30/90 hot mopped undcrlayment applications may be installed perpendicular to the roof pitch prior to June 1, 1995 unless stated otherwise by the material manufacturer. Self- Adhered Underlayment/Anchor Sheet A two ply roof application utilizing a Product Control Approved, self - adhered single ply underlayment with a granulated top surface, in compliance with Dade County Protocol PA 103. The self adhered membrane shall have been tested for static uplift with the bonding material. The roof cover is terminated at approved metal flashings. Any approved No. 30 or No. 43 sheet shall be mechanically attached to the wood deck with approved nails and tin caps spaced in a 12" grid staggered in two rows in the field, and 6" o.c. at the laps. Over properly installed anchor sheet, apply one layer of any approved, self - adhered underlayment in compliance with the Roofing Component Product Control Approval. 3.03 Drip Edge Metal - choose one of the following A. Edge metal shall be installed at perimeters over a two ply underlayment system. The metal profile shall be placed,in an /8" continuous bed of ASTM D 4586, type II flashing cement and fastened 4" o.c. with 1112 ga. x PA" annular ring shay.!,, corrosion resistant roofing nails, placed 1" from the top edge of the deck flange. All bonding surfaces shall be fully primed with ASTM D 41 primer. All joints shall be lapped an minimum of 4" in a bed of approved flashing cement. The metal and granular surface cap sheet shall be joined with a 1 / 8 " bed of flashing cement and a 6" strip of asphalt saturated cotton or fiberglass fabric. The fabric shall be fully embedded in the flashing cement. As an alternate, the metal may be stripped in with a 6" strip of torch, hot asphalt or cold adhesive applied modified bitumen. Joints shall be feathered with adhesive to enhance water flow Page - 8 PA 120 MAY t 1DR, A. Edge metal shall be installed over the anchor sheet at all perimeters in a maximum s / continuous bed of ASTM D 4586 , type 11 flashing cement and fastened 4" o.c. with 1112 ga. x 11/4" annular ring shank, corrosion resistant roof nails placed not greater than 1" from the outside edge of the deck flange. All bonding surfaces shall be fully primed with ASTM D 41 primer. All joints shall be lapped an minimum of 4" in a bed of flashing cement. The mineral surface cap sheet shall be bonded to the metal with ASTM D 312, type IV asphalt. B. Continue from eave up rake/gable in same manner, insuring water shedding capabilities of all metal laps. - C. CARE SHALL BE TAKEN NOT TO COMBINE HOT ASPHALT WITH FLASHING CEMENT. 3.04 Valleys A. Install preformed closed valley of a minimum width of 16" (24" stretch out) with a minimum 2 '/2" height center divcrter and minimum 1" metal edge returns. Lap all joints a minimum of 6" and apply a coating or separator sheet for corrosion resistance when using all Ferrous metals. 1. Secure with approved clips fabricated from similar or compatible material at each batten. Clip 1" metal edge returns to either deck or batten strip with roofing nail through metal strap. 2. Trim metal at all valley /ridge junctions, insuring water shedding capabilities onto the valley. 3. Install lead soaker at all valley /ridge junctions. Turn lead up a minimum of 1" to create a water diverter, insuring water shedding capabilities onto the valley. Note: Where special conditions exist, it may be necessary to increase the finished width of the valley flashing material. 3.05 Valley Termination onto Roof Plane A. When valley terminates onto roof plane install in accordance with standard valley flashing procedures. 1. Apply an 18" x 18" lead soaker /skirt underneath the cave and end valley to carry water off the valley back onto the field tile. A preformed metal wall tray, 5" vertical flange and 6" base flange and 1" metal edge return, shall be installed flush to base of walls over underlayment. Start at lower portion and work up to insure watertight application: 13. Sccurc with clips on the horizontal metal flange at each batten. Clip 1" metal edge diverter to deck or batten strip with approved roofing nail, that is compatible with the metal, through a metal strap. C. Nail vertical metal flange within 1" of metal edge. Secure as necessary to meet job conditions. Lap joints a minimum of 4" and apply flashing cement for corrosion resistance when using all ferrous metals. D. Seal along entire edge of vertical metal flange, covering all nail penetrations with approved flashing cement and membrane. E. When installing optional counterflashing, lap top flange of base flashing a minimum of 3 ". Nail metal within 1" of metal edge 6" o.c. or set metal into reglets and seat thoroughly. Lap joints a minimum of 3" and apply flashing cement or sealant between the laps. 3.07 Standard Curb Mounted Skylights, Chimneys, Etc. A. Install curbs at a sufficient height to meet the tile height. 13. Install a minimum 12" width lead at eave end of each curb. C. Secure with approved nails 6" o..c., insuring nails will be covered by skylight/hood vent flange. D. Continue with lead on both sides of the curb working up toward ridge. Trim as necessary to insure water shedding onto field tile. E. Secure with approved roofing nails 6" o.c. F. Install and ridge end of curb with a minimum of 24" width lead extending over the course of tile abutting the top of the curb and under the second course of the tile at the top of the curb or extend lead under both courses of tile at top of curb. Fold lead to crcate a 1" water diverter at the top and sides of 24" lead saddle. G. Seal all nail penetrations. lead/skylight or hood vent joints with approved sealant. Their accessories shall be installed in compliance with the tile system assembly Product Control Approval. 3.10 Tile Installation Methods Note: Installation instructions set forth in the tile system assembly Product Control Approval shall take precedence. A. Layout - horizontal 1. Chalk horizontal lines beginning one tile length from cave less desired overhang. Install fascia board approximately %" above roof deck or a 1" x 2" wood starter strip at roof edge. ii. Install 8" tapered cant.strip at cave behind fascia and /or starter strip to support metal flashing when using drip edge. Tapered cant strip is optional when using anti - ponding metal. iii. Install a minimum 8" wide anti - ponding metal flashing of to insure positive drainage over fascia/starter strip. Nail top edge of flange onto roof. iv. Apply undcrlayment as per Section 3.02 3.11 Low Profile and High Profile Tile Note: Mortar or adhesive set tiles applied at an incline of 4 ":12" to 7 ":12" shall have the first three courses of tile nailed with not less than one nail per tile. As an alternate the first three courses shall be applied in mortar or adhesive over a single layer of minimum 12 ga. wire mesh with square openings of not less than 3/8" which is mechanically attached to the deck with not less than one roofing nail every square foot. For pitches from 6 ":12" to 7 ":12" every third tile of every fifth course, beginning at the eighth course shall be nailed. A. Starting at lower left corner (facing down roof) install first course of tile. Make certain all tile overhangs drip edge evenly along entire first course. B. Bond and /or secure field, perimeter and corner tile in compliance with the tile system assembly Product Control Approval. C. Cut/break tile for proper staggering of tile courses when using the staggered/cross bond method of installation. Page - 13 I'A 120 MAY D. Set tile in stepped course fashion or in a horizontal and/or vertical fashion when utif izingstraight bond method. E. Lay succeeding courses of field tile in same manner. F. If the tile system assembly has been tested for wind characteristics in compliance with Dade County Protocol PA 108, the tile shall be attached to resist the aerodynamic moment determined using the design pressures for the building, determined under Chapter 23 of the South Florida Building Code, and the attachment calculations set forth in Dade County Protocol PA 115, as set forth in Appendix 'S' of the South Florida Building Code. Confirmation of bonding performance shall be determined by the Building Official in compliance with Dade County Protocol PA 106 not less than.30 days after project completion. G. If the tile system assembly has not been tested for wind characteristics in compliance with Dade County Protocol PA 108, the tile shall be attached to resist the required uplift force determined using the design pressures for the building, determined in compliance with Chapter 23 of the South Florida Building Code, and the attachment calculations set forth in Dade County Protocol PA 115, as set forth in Appendix 'S' of the South Florida Building Code. Confirmation of bonding performance shall be determined by the Building Official in compliance with Dade County Protocol PA 106 not less than 30 days after project completion. I-I. Cut/break field tile to form straight edge at center of hip /ridge. I. Mortar application: Low, I-Iigh and Flat Profile Tile. 1. Set tile in a bed of approved mortar. Apply full 10" minimum length mason trowel full (approximately 4.5 to 5 pounds dry weight) a mortar vertically under pan closest to underlock of previously installed tile. For flat tile place mortar or adhesive adjacent to underlock of previously installed tile. Mortar should be placed from head of tile in previous course to head of tile being set. Do not apply mortar under headlug of tile, or onto the underlock of adjacent tile which may create a tilted or cocked tile. Mortar shall be placed in general compliance with the detail,.drawings attached to the tile system assembly Product Control Approval. 2. Use half starter /finisher tile when provided or cut/break tile for proper staggering of tile courses when using the staggered/cross bond method of installation. 3. Set tile in stepped course fashion or in a horizontal and / vertical fashion when utilizing straight bond method. Page - 14 PA 120 MAY 4. Lay succeeding courses of field tile in same manner. Bed of mortar or .}'' adhesive should make contact with head of the lower course of tile and underside of tile being set. J. Mortar application- Two -Piece Barrel Tile. 1. Apply 10" mason's trowel full of mortar (approximately 4 to 5 pounds dry weight) vertically over chalk line and under center of each pan with narrow end facing down roof. 2. Place bed of mortar or adhesive along inside edges of pans and set covers with wide end facing down roof. 3. Point mortar or adhesive to next acceptable straight -edge finish insuring good strong contact along edges. 4. Lay succeeding courses of field tile in same manner. Bed of mortar or • adhesive should make contact with head of lower course of tile and underside of tile being set. K. Adhesive set Application 1. Apply adhesive material to the underlayment and/or tile in strict compliance with the Product Control Approval. 2. Placement of adhesive shall be in compliance with the detail drawings attached to the Product Control Approval. 3.11 Valleys Note: It is not recommended to install trim tile in valleys. It may be necessary to remove the lugs from the field tile at walls and valley flashings for proper positioning of cut field tiles. A. Preformed Metal with 1" Returns 1. Closed Valley - Miter tile to form straight border on either side of water diverter. 2. Set hip and ridge tile in a continuous bed of color coordinated mortar, lapping tile minimum 1". Insure bed of mortar does not protrude in center of hip or ridge junction. Approximately 1" of field tile shall extend beyond bed of mortar. Point mortar and finish to match tile surface. OR, A. Mechanically fasten hip and ridge tiles to nailer board.. See section 3.16. B. A ridge vent or venting within 18" of ridge is required on all tile applications using self adhered underlayment direct to deck. Ridge vents shall have Roofing Component Product Control Approval. 3.14 Nailer Boards - as required by some tile system assemblies Rake/Gable Tile A. Rake /Gable Tile A. Install salt pressure treated nailer boards secured directly to trusses. 13. Install self adhered membrane over nailer board and seal to tile surface. Care should be taken to ensure no self adhered membrane is exposed to sunlight. C Fasten with nails or screws of sufficient length to penetrate minimum of into each truss. D. Use approved adhesive or clips at overlaps. 1. Install first rake tile to exposed length of first course of field tile with factory finish of rake tile towards the eave. 2. Nail rake Mile with minimum two 10d hot dipped galvanized or non - ferrous nails, or of sufficient length to penetrate the framing a minimum of W, whichever is more restrictive. Install prefabricated gable metal with 1" water return. 2. Fasten by clipping 24" on center. Note: Rake tile application at finishing end may need special consideration to provide proper drainage, i.e. flashing or sealant may be needed. Refer to tile system assembly.Product Control Approval. 3.16 Wall Abutments A. Cut tile to fit approximately ' /z" to base of walls. Point -up mortar not recommended. Note: It may be necessary to remove the lugs from the field tile at wall flashing for proper positioning of cut field tiles. 3.17 Plumbing Stacks A. Metal Finish 1. Cut tile to fit close to plumbing stack. Over plumbing stack install a lead pipe flashing. Pipe flashing shall have a minimum 18" x 18" base. Flashing base shall be set in approved adhesive and form fitted to match the tile profile. Install pipe flashing 'in such a manner to allow shedding of water. The ridge edge of the pipe flashing base shall be installed under the nose of the tile above. Note: Rigid corrosion resistant metal may be substituted for lead on Ilat tile installations. 3.18 Coatings - optional A. Acrylic sealer may be applied to exposed mortar as in accordance with the Tile System Assembly as outlined in the Product Control Approval. B. Color coordinated paint may be applied to all metal flashings. 3.19 Tile Replacement A. Damaged Tile Page - 17 M 120 MAY 1. ,j3reak out and replace damaged roof tile. Do not disturb underlayment. Repair underlayment if necessary. 2. When battens are used, drive nail flush to batten with hammer and flat bar. 3. Apply minimum of ' / x 2 bead" of approved adhesive on tile in course below replacement tile. 4. Immediately set replacement tile in position assuring proper contact. 13. Small Valley and Hip Cuts 1. Elevate nose end of tile in course above small cut tile, apply a minimum of / x 2" bead of approved adhesive at head of cut tile. 2. Immediately set tile in course above in position which assures proper contact. Note: For roof pitches >7 ":12" , mechanical fastening is required. Refer to tile system assembly Product Control Approval. 3.20 Clean -Up A. Remove all broken tile, debris and excess tile from roof. 3.21 Miscellaneous recommendations A. Instructions shall be given to all parties involved cautioning against traffic of any kind allowed on finished roof. Damage to roof tiles and /or sub -roof may result.
