The meeting was called to order at 6:34 p.m.
Mayor Burch related that the Village is in the process of rewriting the ordinances for all committees. Mayor
Burch said that this is an opportunity for the Commission to change their ordinance. Mayor Burch would like
Committees to have more input in the day to day processes. The Art In Public Places ordinance gives the
Commission 1.5% of the cost of the new construction over 7,500 square feet. Mr. Bruce suggested that the
language in the ordinance be changed to lower the square footage needed. Ms. Rodriguez reiterated said
that the Commission needs to communicate with the Village on upcoming projects. Ms. Strickstein believes
it is a good time to address the language of the Commission’s ordinance. It was suggested that the money
from the APP ordinance be used to renovate the 9900 building. Ms. Adsit said that perhaps public artwork is
not the best use of allocating the money from the ordinance.
It was related that former Commission member Susan Ackley passed away on December 29th. It was noted
that no service has been planned. Members suggested dedicating this year’s concert series in memory of
Ms. Ackley. Ms. Burch noted that donations for Ms. Ackley are coming to the Miami Shores Community
Alliance; the MSCA is a 501C3. The Commission also suggested having a memorial plaque designed for
Ms. Ackley.
Ms. Rodriguez made a motion to approve up to $200 for a memorial plaque located by the mural wall
for Ms. Ackley. Motion seconded by Ms. Adsit and unanimously approved.
Ms Rodriguez made a motion to dedicate the Commission spring concert series to Susan Ackley.
Motion seconded by Mr. Bruce and unanimously approved.
Ms. Rodriguez made a motion to approve the December 10, 2024, meeting. Motion seconded by Ms.
Adsit and unanimously approved.
Discussion turned to the concert series. The first concert featuring Ricky Valido is confirmed for January
24th; it was noted that food truck have been secured for this event. Ms. Adsit said that bands for the
February and March concerts still need to be confirmed. Members suggested having a children’s activity at
the January concert. Ms. Adsit suggested keeping it simple with music, food trucks and line dance
instruction. Ms. Strickstein suggested keeping the audience engaged by having the line dancers interact
with them.
Discussion turned to an artist exhibit at the Miami Shores Presbyterian Church chapel. Ms. Rodriguez will
coordinate with the chapel before the next meeting. Ms. Adsit would like to find a venue for a fall artist
event. It was suggested using the Light Box Studio for an artist talk. Mr. Hosfeld said that Barry Gallery
could be an option for an exhibit. Additional publicity would be needed at this venue since it is not in Miami
Shores proper. Mr. Hosfeld added that programming at the Barry Gallery is full until May 2025. It was noted
that the challenge of any venue is lighting, if the venue is not a dedicated art space. Locating a vacant
storefront for a number of months would be an ideal scenario.
The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
