2025-01-16 EAB MEETING MINUTES -EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD- MEETING MINUTES ND 10050 NE 2 AVENUE Thursday, January 17, 2025 6:00 PM 1. CALL TO ORDER Ms. Vignale called the meeting to order at 6:10 PM. 2. ROLL CALL Present: Dana Vignale Mallory Lehroff Michael Weber Renee O’Connor Kathryn Mason Marisol Campillo Absent: Michelle Stone Also Present: Douglas Clark, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs Daniel Diaz, MSES Principal Ysabely Rodriguez, Village Clerk Lisa Baker-Bryant, Assistant Village Clerk 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS There were no public comments. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES A. JUNE 20, 2024 MEETING MINUTES Mr. Weber moved to approve the June 20, 2024 minutes. Ms. Lehroff seconded the motion which carried a 5-0 voice vote. B. SEPTEMBER 19, 2024 MEETING MINUTES Mr. Weber moved to approve the September 19, 2024 minutes. Ms. Lehroff seconded the motion which carried a 5-0 voice vote. 5. CONSIDERATIONS: A. BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF NEW BOARDMEMBERS. New member Marisol Campillo introduced herself to the Board. The board members introduced themselves to the new board member. B. APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRPERSON, VICE CHAIR, AND SECRETARY. Ms. Mason was appointed EAB Chair by way of consensus. Dana Vignale was appointed EAB Vice-Chair by way of consensus. Renee O’Connor was appointed EAB Secretary EAB by way of consensus. C. MSES UPDATE PROVIDED BY ADMINISTRATION Mr. Diaz provided an update of accomplishments and achievements, reporting the following: th -MSES enrollment is currently at 621 students from Pre-K to 5 grade; last year enrollment ended with of 601 students. - Achievement of the MSES being rated an “A” school. -The expansion of the Pre-K program, the school was able to retain one (1) teacher. -The vacancy of one (1) teacher, the loss of three (3) teachers (2 relocated, 1 retired). -MSES added one (1) VPK teacher for grade 4. -The announcement of Ms. Holmes as teacher of the year for 2024-2025. -There was no Rookie teacher of the year nomination. -Pre-K open enrollment opens on Tuesday, January 21, 2025. Applications for VPK are fully online. Once student is qualified, then they can come to the school to register. All applications are due in March 2025. EAB is to present status update at the February 18, 2025, Village Council meeting. The board discussed the different accomplishments, goals and events that parents would like to hear about to add to the presentation. Mr. Diaz was asked to provide information on how many enrolled students are from Miami Shores Village for the last 3 years. As a fundraiser for the PTA, there was a discussion regarding selling sponsorships of poster advertising in 30 day increments. Mr. Weber volunteered with the assistance of Ms. Mason to seek Village support for said initiative. Ms. Vignale provided historical context on why the previous attempt was unsuccessful, stating neighboring residents viewed the ads as unsightly. D. UPDATE REGARDING THE REALTOR PRESENTATION (MSES). Discussion ensued regarding prospective dates for the realtor presentation. Ms. O’Connor was asked to create invitations, to which she accepted. Ms. Mason and Mr. Diaz will collaborate on the brochure design implementation using funds from the Cambridge budget. The MSES breakfast will be held on April 15th at 9:30am. Ms. Vignale and Ms. O’Connor will organize a presentation to the realtors. The deadline to compile information for the presentation and invitations will be February 20, 2025. E. DISCUSSION REGARDING THE FIVE STRATEGIC AREAS OUTLINED IN THE EDUCATION COMPACT. i. Student Achievement ii. Community Involvement iii. Parental Engagement: iv. Communication v. Facilities Joint-Use Agreement Ms. Vignale provided an update on the plan for green spaces as a result of discussions concerning the Parks Master Plan. She mentioned that a turf field is being considered as part of the Parks Master Plan and noted that the PTA currently spends $750 every two weeks on maintenance of the MSES Field. Ms. Mason asked Mr. Diaz for an update on the septic tanks. Mr. Diaz stated that he is awaiting a meeting with the project manager on January 28, 2025. Mr. Weber inquired about prize incentives for Give Miami Day. Ms. Vignale responded that Ms. Lehroff’s donation was directed to the charity. 6. NEW BUSINESS Ms. Vignale discussed a DCS strategic plan survey for the future asking residents, “What is your dream school? Her personal vision is to make Miami Shores the place where people will want to move to because of the great school choice options. Ms. Vignale discussed putting together a community focus group consisting of home school, private, charter, public school, different ages of children and teachers. The emphasis is to make the significant improvements at DSC within 2- 5 years. 7. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:35 PM.
