2024-05-29 FAC Minutes Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission meeting held on May 29, 2024. Members present: Kristen Adsit Victor Bruce Clarissa Rodriguez Michael Stock Members absent: Anne Camille Hersh Ian Peter Hosfeld Tara Strickstein Also present: Angela Dorney, Recreation Director Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant The meeting was called to order at 6:40 p.m. Mr. Bruce made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 9, 2024 meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. At this time an update on the Miami Shores Community Alliance grant request was given to the members. Ms. Rodriguez noted that the awardment of grants has been postponed until the MSCA’s June 5th meeting. Ms. Dorney related that one of the pieces of artwork that was displayed on the wall in the lobby of Village Hall fell. As a result, artist Jonathan Brooks has been contacted and all of his pieces have been removed from the lobby walls. Ms. Rodriguez added that there is limited display space for art at the library, other than the nooks and some spaces on the walls. Additionally, Village Hall is not a great space to display art. Commission members said that an artist exhibit in the 9900 building would most likely be a one night exhibit; the opening and closing night would be on the same day. Mr. Bruce suggested that the Commission create a three-part event at the 9900 building; namely, a season of indoor events could be created. Ms. Rodriguez suggested a call to artists for the 9900 building. The suggestion was to have a call to artists in June with an artist selected in August and a subsequent event planned for September. The following was suggested for the 9900 building; September Gallery Night, October Performance Event and finally a November event, such as an art talk. Members suggested that for the October event the Commission could have a story teller telling ghost stories. Ms. Adsit suggested combining these events with local business openings. Another suggestion is a closing event featuring a preview of Art Basal; learning how to navigate the event. It was noted that the call to artists for the 9900 building needs to also include the longevity of the event as well as the installation and deinstallation of the event. Upcoming call to artists include the fountain at Memorial Park; it was noted that the Commission needs to have a vision of the fountain prior to a call to artists. Ms. Adsit noted that whatever is done to the fountain should be respectful of the park and the area. Ms. Dorney suggested that the Commission give a board report of possible projects at a upcoming Council meeting. Mr. Bruce would like to add a PowerPoint presentation during public comment. Discussion turned to the Streetscapes Project. Ms. Dorney related that all of the signs on 109th Street have been removed. Ms. Rodriguez said she will request a meeting with Village Manager Mr. Scott in reference to the removed signs. Ms. Rodriguez added that this goes against ordinance procedures. It was noted that protocol need to be created in the ordinance. Commission members are questioning the need for a Fine Arts board. Ms. Adsit also questioned Art In Public Places in Miami Shores noting that most cities with Art In Public Places build a permanent collection; Miami Shores Art In Public Places projects are mainly temporary works. Mr. Stock suggested creating a policy for future projects so that they are protected. Ms. Rodriguez said that the Commission needs to regroup so that this does not happen in the future. Ms. Rodriguez commented that a subcommittee is needed for Art In Public Places; it is important to see what the C ouncil is looking for in terms of APP. At this time a flier for an inflatable bandshell structure was distributed to Commission members as a new idea for future concerts. The approximate cost would be $2,000. Ms. Adsit added that lighting for a gallery night at the 9900 building is also needed. The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
