The deadline to turn in the grant request is April 15th; Ms. Rodriguez will forward the final report to the Commission prior to submission. It was noted that an independent third party makes recommendations for the distribution of funds and then goes to the Mayor for final approval. Discussion turned to Green Day; the Commission previously approved a budget of $650 for KidCreate for 2.50 hours. KidCreate provided a quote of $800 for Green Day. Ms. Hersh made a motion to approve an additional $150 for KidCreate Studios for Green Day. Motion seconded by Ms. Adsit and unanimously approved. Discussion turned to the Historic Preservation Board. On May 11th, there will be a Centennial Splendor tour of 1920’s homes in Miami Shores. There will be six homes on tour, each over 100 years old. The Historic Preservation Board has asked if the Commission would like to participate in the event, perhaps with a performer at one of the homes; they are looking for a sponsor for this event. Ms. Strickstein that the Commission may be interested in a future collaboration/event with this Board. Mr. Bruce said that a future exhibition could focus on some of the unique and interesting details from different homes. Ms. Rodriguez said another collaboration could be having small, intimate art talks in homes. Discussion turned to the Streetscapes Project. Resident Canor Pato came to the last Council meeting and the decision was made to remove the sign on 109th Street. Commission members noted that the Historic Preservation Board loves the Streetscapes and recommended that a brochure detailing them be created. Resident Dennis Leyva noted that Arts in Public Places does not have an appeals process, but he is willing to advise the Commission. There has been overwhelming positive responses to the Streetscape Project in the community. Ms. Adsit is preparing an art register for the Commission. Ms. Dorney noted that Brockway Library does not wish to be included in the registry. Ms. Adsit will look into quotes for the repair of the Brito sculpture. It was noted that the fountain at Memorial Park needs to be rehabbed. Budgets for the maintenance of existing art work needs to be addressed moving forward. Discussion turned to ideas for Fall 2024 events. It was noted that Spanish Heritage Month is in September. One suggested is having a Drive In Movie in the south parking lot of the Miami Shores Country Club with a screen facing west; perhaps showing West Side Story or Encanto. Ms. Rodriguez also suggested doing a program, such as dance lessons, at Miami Theater Center for Spanish Heritage Month. Another suggestion was made to commission artists to paint the doors at the Community Center; a call to artists could be conducted with young artists at area schools. Ms. Strickstein said this project could be tied into a workshop. Ms. Dorney noted that there was an issue with the sound during the concert series. Ms. Hersh added that the artists being hired should be paid better. Ms. Dorney suggested asking the artists what their fee is rather than telling them know what the Commission can pay. All in all, the concert choices have been great this year. Ms. Rodriguez suggested increasing the grant request to the MS Community Alliance to pay for quality artists as well as sound. Ms. Rodriguez said that Commission needs to begin programming for the Fall; consider a brochure for Arts In Public Places with a map and landmarks. Mr. Bruce suggested looking at existing locations to utilize and upgrade those, such as the triangle area on NE 6th Avenue near Publix. Mr. Bruce suggested that the Commission send a wellness basket to Ms. Ackley. Ms. Adsit made a motion to approve $150 for a wellness basket. Motion seconded by Mr. Bruce and unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
