2024-02-15 EAB MINUTES1 EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES 10050 NE 2nd Avenue Thursday, February 15, 2024 The meeting was called to order at 6:06p.m. with the following members present: Ms. Dana Vignale Mr. Michael Weber Ms. Mallory Lehroff Ms. Kristen Feuer Also present: Ms. Ysabely Rodriguez: Village Clerk Mr. Douglas Clark: Supervisor at the Office of Inter-Governmental Affairs and Family and Community Engagement Mr. Daniel Diaz: MSES Principal 1. CALL TO ORDER: 6:06 p.m. Quorum established. 2. ROLL CALL: See Above. 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Motion to approve by Mr. Michael Weber and seconded by Ms. Mallory Lehroff. Motion Passed. 5. CONSIDERATIONS: a. MSES UPDATE PROVIDED BY ADMINISTRATION - Mr. Daniel Diaz reported there are currently 585 students enrolled, including three new students this week and one student last week. - The school is fundraising for Niklaus Children’s Hospital, school tours are continuing. - MSES does not yet have the Cambridge funds from the Village. Ms. Ysabely Rodriguez reported attending a meeting today with intergovernmental affairs, the village attorney, and others to discuss the drafting of a new program grant agreement. MDCPS will draft the agreement, it will go to the EAB for consideration and then to the Village Counsel. - Mr. Daniel Diaz reported on a recent school Everglades camping trip. - Ms. Dana Vignale discussed the upcoming school choice magnet application deadlines and the elementary to middle school pipeline in relation to the Cambridge Program. b. DISCUSSION REGARDING THE FIVE STRATEGIC AREAS OUTLINED IN THE EDUCATION COMPACT - Ms. Mallory Lehroff and Mr. Daniel Diaz led a discussion regarding the Facilities Joint-Use Agreement. - Mr. Daniel Diaz informed the board that Doctor’s Charter School is conducting a debate competition at MSES in March 2024. 2 - Ms. Mallory Lehroff informed the board about a local STEAM Club, led by a local Miami Shores father, and the board discussed the future possibility of using the MSES campus. - Mr. Michael Weber brought up the possibility of children who attend MSES but do not live in Miami Shores being able to use Brockway Memorial Library and the possibility of having the fee waived for them. - Mr. Michael Weber and Ms. Dana Vignale led a discussion on Communication. - Mr. Michael Weber reached out to someone at the school board in an effort to put the Northwest boundary issue back on the agenda. - Ms. Dana Vignale suggested the Village website should contain a drop- down link for MSES and the Education Compact should be available on the village website. - Ms. Dana Vignale led a discussion on Parent Engagement. - Ms. Dana Vignale is working on the school survey and will plan to distribute it this weekend. 6. NEW BUSINESS: No new business. 7. ADJOURNMENT: Meeting adjourned at 6:58p.m.
