2023-07-26 EAB Minutes1 EDUCATION ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES July 26, 2023 6:00 PM The meeting was called to order with the following members present: Ms. Kristen Feuer Ms. Dana Vignale Mr. Antonio Netto Mr. Michael Weber Ms. Kathryn Mason Also present: Ms. Ysabely Rodriguez: Village Clerk Mr. Douglas Clark: Supervisor at the Office of Inter-Governmental Affairs and Family and Community Engagement Mr. Daniel Diaz: MSES Principal Ms. Aillette Rodriguez-Diaz, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs 1. CALL TO ORDER: 6:06 p.m. Quorum Established. 2. ROLL CALL: See above. 3. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None. 4. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: Motion by Mr. Weber. Minutes approved. 5. CONSIDERATIONS: a. MSES UPDATE PROVIDED BY ADMINISTRATION - Mr. Diaz informed us that there are currently 75 Kindergarteners enrolled for the Fall. The new building is ready and waiting for the permits to close. b. UPDATE ON BOUNDARY ADJUSTMENT REQUEST - Ms. Rodriguez stated she officially began communication asking about the process back in Sept 2022. Ms. Montaner was very responsive and stated that Dr. Michael Lewis would serve as the lead. Ms. Rodriguez heard back from him in June of this year to pursue the ABC process. The ABC process begins in October and the request will be reviewed then. - Ms. Vignale gave some background information for the benefit of Ms. Aillette Rodriguez-Diaz. Regarding changing the boundary to include the small west side of Miami Shores Village that is not currently included in the boundary. The question is how do we move forward? c. DISCUSSION ON UPCOMING EDUCATION BOARD REPORT - Ms. Vignale suggested utilizing another survey and providing an annual report to the Village. - Mr. Netto proposed putting together a proposal of the report to be shared with the board at the September EAB meeting and then the board can decide if any adjustments need to be made or if we can share the report with the Village Council at the October 17th meeting. 2 - The board discussed Mr. Diaz also being present when the report is shared with the Village so that he can answer questions and showcase the great work happening at the school. - Ms. Mason inquired how often we have sent the survey out in the past and collected data. - Mr. Netto stated that we surveyed the community in 2019 and again in 2022, and that we could do it again if we thought it would add value. 6. NEW BUSINESS a. Introduction - Mr. Douglas Clark from the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs introduced Ms. Aillette Rodriguez-Diaz who has extensive experience teaching and in administration as well. - Ms. Aillette Rodriguez-Diaz stated she began her career as a teacher twenty years ago, was a vice principal and then principal at I-Prep Academy, became the district director at the Office of Community Engagement and now will be over the position last held by Martha Montaner. b. Give Miami Day - Ms. Vignale stated the registration for Give Miami Day opens August 1, 2023. - Mr. Diaz met with the PTA just recently regarding Give Miami and will work with the PTA to register the school so we can get the application in as soon as possible. The PTA will be present for the September meeting so we can strategize. The important dates are as follows: 1. Application opens: August 1, 2023 2. Application deadline: October 6, 2023 3. Give Miami Day: November 16, 2023 - Mr. Netto stated that if we can prepare the application prior to the next board meeting, one member can sit with the PTA and then the board can review it together at the next board meeting before submitting the application. - The board discussed possible uses for funds raised at Give Miami day and possible goals to reach for including landscaping, a covering for the basketball court. - Mr. Diaz stated he would like to focus on the inside of the school rather than the outside. - Mr. Weber volunteered his time and services and stated he is available to help and volunteer in many capacities at the school. - Mr. Diaz stated that he and Ms. Mason previously held a meeting along with his secretary to make sure the volunteer process is streamlined so that it is a mutually beneficial relationship. - Ms. Mason shared that her son will be starting in August, and she had a meeting with Ms. Jessica Davis at the school to discuss ways to assist as a parent and volunteer at the school. They discussed the possibility of creating an ambassador program- a volunteer program to engage former students and active parents to become ambassadors for the school and be out in the community sharing information about the school. 3 - Mr. Netto discussed his Saturday morning soccer program. Currently, Mr. Netto coaches and teaches approximately 25 students on Saturday mornings at 10am. and wants to begin an additional 9am class with the younger Kindergarteners at the school. 7. ADJOURNMENT- meeting was adjourned at 6:50 p.m.
