The meeting was called to order at 6:03 p.m.
Ms. Bowman made a motion to approve the minutes of the November 9, 2021 meeting.
Motion seconded by Ms. Dunlop and unanimously approved.
Discussion turned to Miguel Prypchan’s sculptures and the Sculpture Park. Concerns raised at the
November meeting included installation costs as well as liability risks. Ms. Dunlop asked about the
size of the area and how the sculptures would fit. It was noted that it is an abstract piece of art and
people can walk around the piece and interact with it. Only one sculpture would be displayed. Mr.
Prypchan’s representative, James Winzey, noted that the sculpture is steel with epoxy paint. A
similar sculpture by the artist was installed at Bayfront Park for Art Basel with no issues. It was
noted that the sculpture is 3.6 meters; 14’ high x 48’ wide. The dimensions of the sculpture park is
108’ x 130’. It was noted that the sculpture in question is located on NE 2 Avenue and 62nd Street;
Commission members were asked to visit the sculpture on their own. It was noted that the base of
the sculpture would be placed into a dug trench and buried and it is structurally safe for hurricanes.
It was noted that the cost of installation is $20,000 but Mr. Winzey has offered to find sponsors to
cover the installation cost. It was related that most sculpture loans are for a period of two years.
Mr. Prypchan is looking to donate the piece permanently.
Mr. Prypchan and Mr. Winzey left the meeting at this time.
Ms. Dorney noted that the existing concrete bases would need to be removed and the sprinkler
lines would need to be reworked, as necessary. The cost of the concrete pedestal removal also
needs to be addressed. Ms. Ackley said a call to artists will need to go out if Mr. Prypchan’s
sculpture does not work out.
Discussion turned to the NW 2nd Avenue project. All three artists, Daniel Marosi, Jonathan Brooks
and Baye, met on site to discuss the project. The deadline to submit proposals is January 15 th. A
special meeting date of either January 20th or 25th was suggested to discuss the submissions.
Discussion turned to the March spring concert. Mr. Stock has reached out to two bands and will
reach out to another band and report at the next meeting.
Discussion turned to Sol and The Tribu concert on January 14th. Commission members discussed
the proposed flier. Ms. Ackley will reach out to food vendors. There will be a $50 vendor fee.
Discussion turned to Gallery Night in April. An artist to display at Brockway Library has not been
selected. It was noted that the amount of pieces displayed will depend on the size of the artist’s
work. There is no theme or format for the event, but the work needs to be family-friendly. A date
for the event has not been decided.
It was related that the date for Miami Shores’ 90th Anniversary celebration has not been
determined.
Ms. Ackley said the Commission may need to pass on an event for Black History Month this year
due to the lack of time to plan an event.
The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
