The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m.
Ms. Dunlop made a motion to approve the minutes of the June 13, 2023 meeting. Motion
seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved.
Ms. Ackley related that since there is no independent sponsor for the October concert, she suggested
using the funds from the Fine Arts FY2024 budget. Ms. Ackley also suggested calling this concert the
‘anniversary’ concert going forward. It was noted that a grant was received from the Miami Shores
Community Alliance for the sponsorship of the spring concert series beginning January 2024. Ms.
Dunlop made a motion to use the FY2024 budget to pay for the October concert. Motion
seconded by Mr. Bruce and unanimously approved.
Ms. Ackley related to Commission members that she would like help from everyone on upcoming
events going forward. Ms. Dunlop made a motion to create an Art Design subcommittee for new
project developments. Motion seconded by Mr. Bruce and unanimously approved.
Mr. Bruce suggested that the current mural wall on the lawn of Village Hall is small and could be
doubled in size; the same height but extend the width on both sides. It was noted that a new concrete
pad would be needed. Ms. Dunlop made a motion to explore expanding the size of the mural wall
prior to its repair. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved.
At this time the Commission discussed the call to artist submissions for the mural wall. The three
semifinalists chosen to present site specific proposals at the next meeting are Samara Ash, Alain
Castoriano and Red Stostak-Vales. Commission members also saud that Pangea Kali Verga’s work is
more appropriate for a library exhibit. Each semifinalist will receive a $500 stipend for their proposals
with the funds coming from the Commission’s donation account. It was suggested tabling the idea of
an expansion of the mural wall at this time. Mr. Hosfeld volunteered to contact all three semifinalists
with the details. It was noted that the artists not selected as semifinalists will also be contacted.
Gallery Night is scheduled for November 9th featuring the installation of the mural wall and library
exhibit.
Discussion turned to the art in public places project on NW 2nd Avenue. It was related that Miami-Dade
county has denied that request. Public Works Director Chris Miranda has forwarded a list of potential
locations for art in public places locations in the Village, one of which could be chosen for Mr. Marosi’s
work. Mr. Bruce suggested utilizing multiple sites for the exhibit, somewhere that’s walkable. Mr.
Bruce made a motion to form a subcommittee comprised of Mr. Bruce and Ms. Ackley for the
final location of the Streetscapes art in public project. The final locations selected will be based on
Mr. Miranda’s information of potential locations. Suggested locations include NE 96th Street & NE 2nd
Ave (median), Park Drive north of 89th Street, NE 101st Street & NE 6th Avenue (median), NE 101st
Street by Tot Lot. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. A subcommittee
meeting was scheduled for August 11th.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00pm.
