The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m.
Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the minutes of the November 14, 2023 meeting. Motion
seconded by Ms. Hersh and unanimously approved.
Ms. Hersh related that Liset Alea has agreed to the January 19th concert date playing bossa nova style
music; the artist will receive $2000 and sound will be $500. It was noted that Liset Alea has her own
following for publicity. Afrobeta is the suggested artist for the February 16th concert.
Discussion turned to the window coverings on vacant storefronts on NE 2nd Avenue. The works of Alain
Castoriano have been suggested due to the abstract nature of his photos. Mr. Hosford has reached out to
Mr. Castoriano; Mr. Hosford is wondering how to charge for the rights to use the photos to create vinyl tile
panels. Should the amount charged be a set amount or as the work is needed? It was noted that the fee is
not comparable to the mural artist’s fee since Mr. Castoriano’s work has already been created. It was noted
that the company that fabricates and installs the window coverings should be responsible for the
measurements. Mr. Castoriano, as the artist, should make the decision on how the art pattern is repeated
for the windows. It was noted that the artist fee would come out of the Commission’s budget. Ms. Dorney
suggested putting the window treatments on hold until a new planning director is hired in the Village. It was
also noted that a Village contract will be needed for the artwork to be used for vinyl tile panels.
The unveiling of the mural wall is scheduled for Friday December 8th at 5pm. Bruce & Bruce will donate $50
towards a photographer fee for the event. It was noted that Samara Ash gave a quote of $1050 for a
sealant for the mural wall.
The streetscape signs are scheduled to be installed within the next week.
Discussion turned to the mountain sculptures. Mr. Bruce noted that the artist has offered to donate the
sculptures. The suggested location is the triangle shaped area on NE 6th Avenue near Publix. Mr. Bruce
suggested raising the sculpture slightly so that it doesn’t lie on the grass directly. Ms. Adsit noted that all
sculptures will need maintenance at some point; the Commission will need to take on that responsibility
when the time comes. Ms. Adsit added that it is a big commitment to take ownership rather than as a loan
of the sculpture.
Ms. Adsit offered to look at the Brito Ball at the aquatic center in regards to its’ maintenance.
It was suggested that the 9900 building could be used as an art space; the space could be activated for
events or exhibit. Ms. Strickstein noted that at MIA student artwork is on display, that the level of the work
displayed is amazing.
Ms. Hersh suggested including schools in the next call to artists. Ms. Adsit suggested bringing in a nonprofit
to provide guidance for similar events such as Miami Light Project’s Lightbox in the Shores.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
