Meeting of the Board of Trustees
Wednesday, February 8, 2023
Brockway Memorial Library Conference Room
The meeting called to order at 8:37 a.m. Present were Michelle Brown, Library Director, Kathleen Redmond,
President, Cheryl Gowing, Vice President. Laura Farley, Secretary, Christine Gay, and Nancy Frehling

1. Minutes of the January 18, 2023 meeting deferred
2. Community Alliance Report: Ms. Gay reported on the January Miami Shores Community Alliance
Meeting and presented the report. Mayor Harris presided over the meeting and the Mayor’s Report
covered the following:
a. The announcement that 2/24 is Mardi Gras Concert
b. The announcement that 4/29 is Green Day
c. The Mayor’s Brunch is scheduled for March 5, 2023
d. Horace Mann (Robyn Heckler) to sponsor Community Alliance Meeting
e. Brockway to host April 5 Community Alliance Meeting
3. Financial Report:
a. Ms. Brown noted nothing significant to report at this time
b. Ms. Brown reported income of $22.50 from yoga
c. Ms. Gowing moved to accept the report, Ms. Redmond seconded the motion; motion passed
unanimously.
4. Circulation Report: For the month of January, the Library circulated 2,707 items, and 101 holds placed.
There were 27 digital magazine and 182 e-book/e-audio check-outs on Overdrive, 17 sessions on Mango
Languages and 0 searches on Ancestry. Brain Pop Jr.-62 sessions. Cheryl suggested monitoring
Ancestry.com and announce that we may be dropping. May want to change from Mango to Duo Lingo
The Library added 128 adult items, 44 youth items, and 27 media items and acquired 5 donations. 63
books were weeded from the J Fiction collection, Staff repaired, changed and replaced 8 items.
The Library added 27 patrons in January – 16 adult residents, 7 child residents, 0 adult non-residents and
4 child non-residents. The total patron count is currently 7,101. Total in person visits 2,378 (up from
1,918 in December)

5. Old Business: Construction update: Have not received TCO. Water meter in (did plumber come to
connect?) Did not pass final fire inspection, public works sent two emails to Stobs. South ramp update:
new company selected, applying for permit. Indoor plant project: several questions: if plant dies is it
replaced? Did we obtain other bids? Question monthly maintenance fee, exactly what it covers. Plants in
new children’s wing? Ms. Frehling moved to accept plant fee of $2,250 from trust, Ms. Gay seconded
motion; motion passed. Historic Designation Consideration for BML: discussion ensued and motion set
forth to apply for Historic Designation and Marker. Ms. Gay moved to accept, Ms. Farley seconded
motion; motion passed. Harry Potter night: Ms. Holsing requested Saturday evening in October. Ms.
Gay suggested charging small fee for event, Ms. Gowing has most of the Harry Potter items. Last time
the event was held, over 200 people attended. Discussion regarding date for Grand Opening of
Children’s wing (awaiting TCO); Mr. Stobs agreed to contribute to food and drink for event, amount to
be determined.
6. Other Items
a. Upcoming grant cycle: MSCA/Friendly Villagers- member needs to request
b. Reading with Troy, (Gracie retired) 15 minute intervals, 4 children in one hour
c. Update on Story Walk in Constitution Park
7. Announcements:
a. MOCA series for Teens: Tuesdays beginning February 14th at 3:30pm
b. Black History Month Series: Saturdays, February 4,11,18,25 at 10:30am (Library to host
breakfast)
c. Scots in the Colonies: February 23 at 6:30pm
d. The Six Wives of Henry VIII March 2nd at 6:30pm
e. Genealogy series: Saturdays in March 10:30am-Noon
f. Music of Ireland: March 14 at 6:00pm
g. The next scheduled Board meeting is Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 8:30am
8. Public Comment: None
9. Adjournment: Motion to adjourn was made by Ms. Gowing and seconded by Ms. Gay. The meeting was
adjourned at 9:53am
