2021-01-12 FAC MinutesMinutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on January 12, 2021. Members present: Susan Ackley Beth Boone Victor Bruce Luis Crump Michael Stock Members absent: Tia Bowman Jewel Malone The meeting was called to order at 6:00 pm. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the minutes of December 8, 2020 minutes. Motion seconded by Mr. Crump and unanimously approved. Ms. Dorney reviewed the Commission’s financial report noting there is $7030 remaining in the FY2021 budget. Discussion turned to the test Zoom meeting. Mr. Crump commented that Mr. Valle’s camera was unsteady when he was speaking. Mr. Crump said it also appeared that Mr. Valle’s camera was low resolution and suggested that he may want to switch to a computer for the event. Ms. Boone commented that You Tube is the more preferred platform for presentations. The Arts Alive Online has been promoted on social media sites, including Facebook and Instagram. Ms. Dorney added that 9 people have reserved tickets on Eventbrite and that Eventbrite is able to send reminders 3 days before the event as well as an hourly update. Discussion turned to Courtney Einhorn and the mural wall in front of Village Hall. The mural wall was explained to new members. Ms. Ackley noted that Ms. Einhorn’s samples are too similar to her pieces on her website; there is no element of Miami Shores is in the samples. Mr. Bruce suggested Mr. Einhorn view Miami Shores as a pineapple field and make an abstract sample. Ms. Boone said her samples are amateur and that her abstracts are better. Discussion turned to Leesa Richards. Mr. Stock related that Ms. Richards agreed to a February 19th online event, with accompaniment, for $500. Ms. Richards was recommended to the Commission by the Miami Shores People of Color. Ms. Ackley and Mr. Bruce will work to create a flyer, with the event beginning at 7:30 pm. Mr. Stock suggested at the end of the program having a Q/A segment. Discussion turned to a March online dance event. Ms. Ackley asked if Ms. Boone had any suggestions for a dance performance. Ms. Boone said that Miami Light Project (MLP) will be showing Screendance Miami Festival and would be able to create an online event for the Commission. Ms. Boone noted that the performance is already paid for and suggested that the Commission could make a donation to the artists. Ms. Boone said she could email a trailer of the event, as well as a press release, and encouraged everyone to view it so they can get an idea of the performance. Ms. Stock said this is a great idea. Ms. Boone likes the programs to be concise; the performances would be short with different durations, ranging from one minute to seven minutes. The films that are presented are various themed. Ms. Dorney asked how their outdoor event deals with social distancing. Ms. Boone said that most organizations have opted to livestream events. Ms. Boone said that some organizations have live events with reserved pods; pods of 2, 4 and 6 people are reserved. After Ms. Boone speaks with her staff, she will advise us of a date that would work. Ms. Boone suggested that everyone check out the films on Instagram before making a decision. It was noted that the Commission has decided to do a monthly online event until it is safe to have live events. Ms. Boone suggested that the Commission select a date and she will check with her board for approval; Ms. Boone said she does not want to be in charge of marketing for the event. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve a $500 stipend for Miami Light Project to use a prerecorded dance program for an online event. Motion seconded by Mr. Bruce and unanimously approved. Ms. Boone added that all the filmmakers are all South Florida artists. Discussion turned to old business, namely the NW 2nd Avenue art in public places project. Mr. Bruce explained the project to new members. The median on NW 2nd Avenue would be used to display sculpture pieces. It was noted that guidelines for selecting artists as well as a formal call to artists is needed. Mr. Bruce said he could handle the permitting with the Village, adding that a permit would be valid for a year once received. Ms. Boone suggesting tabling the NW 2nd Avenue project and adding it onto February’s agenda. The meeting adjourned at 7:20 pm.
