Meeting of the Board of Trustees
Wednesday, February 12, 2020
Brockway Memorial Library Conference Room
Meeting called to order at 8:33 a.m. Present were Michelle Brown, Library Director, Laura Farley, President ,
Kathleen Redmond, Vice President, Cheryl Gowing, Christine Gay, Secretary, and John Camp.
Public Comment: None
Presentation: Patrizia Bonaduce, Historic Preservation Board member and Wesley Castellanos, Historic
Preservation Board President, were present at the meeting. May is Historic Preservation Month, and the Historic
Preservation Board would like to give a presentation at the Library during May 2020. The Historic Preservation
Board is donating information it collected and researched. Laura Farley moved to approve May 7, 2020 opening
exhibit of the Historic Preservation Board, to dedicate the Month of May to Historic Presentation, and to accept
its donation of materials to the Library. Kathy Redmond seconded. Motion passed.

1. Approval of the Minutes of the January meeting: Kathy Redmond moved to approve the minutes;
Christine Gay seconded. Motion passed.
2. Community Alliance Report: John Camp attended the Community Alliance Meeting and presented
the report.
3. Financial Report: The Library had an unexpected expense arise with regard to the electrical system. We
need to bring one area of conduit up to code. The budget for this expense will be determined next month.
In spring, the Library needs to update its patron server, wireless printing and computer security systems.
These expenses are included in the current budget. Kathy Redmond moved to accept the Financial Report
and Laura Farley seconded. Motion passed.
4. Circulation Report: In January, the Library circulated 4,741 items and 146 holds were placed. The
Library added 152 adult items, including a set of World Book Encyclopedia. Added 60 donations of
books. Outdated books were weeded from the non-fiction collection (in the categories of science, health
and business). Staff repaired 98 items. The Library added 23 patrons in January 2020. Total patron
count is currently 6,413.
5. Old Business
a. Xavier Cortada exhibit – Michelle Brown will follow up on this.
6. Other Items
a. The Library has one open position for Library Page
b. Amaranthine suggested idea of fundraising for Library and donating portion of proceeds to
Library. Kathleen Redmond agreed to discuss this idea further with the owner of Amaranthine.
c. OSHER Fees – approved charging for OSHER events at Library starting this fall.
d. Garden renovation funding request – Michelle Brown requested $750 from the Trust (the Library
currently has about $60,000 in Trust) for new plants and hardscape for the Library’s garden.
Motion to approve by Christine Gay; seconded by Cheryl Gowing. Discussion was had. Motion
passed.

e. This year is the 100th anniversary of Women Getting the Vote – Several events are planned at the
Library. The first event is with Michael Stock. The second event will be in April, and will be a
discussion of Florida Women in History. The last event will be on September 17, 2020 and the
Ken Burns documentary on Women Getting the Vote will be shown. This September event will
be hosted by the Mayor.
f. SEFLIN digitization grant opportunity – have applied for this for $2,500
g. Library Electrical – see above
h. Capital Requests – There is a push for all Miami Shores Village municipal buildings to have metal
roofs, with solar panels, and also for roof of the Library’s Children’s Wing addition to be metal.
The Library is requesting hurricane impact windows to be installed on the front of the building.
Additionally, the Library is requesting new carpet for the main room. The current carpet is over
20 years old.

g. Classical Guitarist, Edwin Culver, presents “Spotlight on Ireland” – Thursday, March 5th 6:30pm
