' •'• • • PACIFICA Project No. 610-18040 • • •"' Dear Mr. Paton: PACIFICA ENGINEERING SERVICES, LLC (PACIFICA) is pleased to present the results of Geotechnical Engineering Study for the referenced project. This report includes the results of field exploration and preliminary geotechnical recommendations, as well as general site development. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A geotechnical exploration and evaluation of the subsurface conditions have been completed for the proposed pool in Miami Shores, Florida. In general, beneath the 6 inches of Top Soil, the subsurface condition consisted of Dark Brown Organic Silty Sand underlain by sandy silts with limestone to the boring termination depth. The ground water was encountered at a depth of, about 3.5 feet below existing grade. The results of this exploration indicated that the subsurface conditions at the site are generally suitable for the use of shallow foundations for support of the proposed structures. A moderate amount of site preparation will be required to increase shear strength and reduce foundation settlements to acceptable levels. Details related to site development, foundation design, and construction considerations are included in subsequent sections of this report. It is our opinion that the foundation soils are suitable to support the planned structure on shallow foundations proportioned for a net bearing pressure of 2,500 pounds per square foot (psf) or less. The owner/designer should not rely solely on this Executive Summary and must read and evaluate the entire contents of this report prior to utilizing our engineering recommendations in preparation of design/construction documents. Our services were authorized by Mr. Nick Paton. • • • • Project Description Our understanding of the project is based on information provided by Mr. Paton. Wt-aAderstan 4;at the proposed construction will be a swimming pool. .. •. •. The geotechnical recommendations presented in this report are based on th8 available:project information, pool location, and the subsurface materials described in this report. *Lf.,I l of the. voted information is incorrect, please inform PACIFICA in writing so that we may amend 0the recommendations presented in this report if appropriate and if desired by the client. PACIFICA will not be responsible for the implementation of its recommendations when it is not notified of changes in the project. Purpose and Scope of Services The purpose of this study was to explore the subsurface conditions at the site to enable an evaluation of acceptable construction and site development considerations. Our scope of services included the drilling of two (2) Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings to a depth of 6 to 10 feet below the ground surface for the proposed swimming pool, plus the preparation of this geotechnical report. This report briefly outlines the testing procedures, presents available project information, describes the site and subsurface conditions, and presents recommended soil parameters. The scope of services did not include an environmental assessment for determining the presence or absence of wetlands or hazardous or toxic materials in the soil, surface water, groundwater, or air on or below, or around this site. Any statements in this report regarding odors, colors, and unusual or suspicious items or conditions are strictly for informational purposes. Prior to further development of this site, an environmental assessment is advisable. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS Site Location and Description The site is located at 1192 NE 91 Terrace, Miami Shores, Florida. At the time of field exploration, the site was occupied by a 1-story structure. r.,PACmCA^ MVKI , L.0 Nick Residence — Proposed Pool Page 3 Miami Shores, Florida I PACIFICA Project No.: 610-18040 Subsurface Conditions Our subsurface investigation consisted of drilling of two (2) Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings to a depth of 6 to 10 feet below the ground surface. The attached Boring Location Plan, Sheet 1, shows approximate locations of the borings. • The SPT borings were drilled using a truck mounted drill rig D 90, and mud tdtar'y and t2Shhg procedures. Samples of the in -place materials were recovered at frequent intervjg "g a standard split spoon driven with a 140-pound hammer freely falling 30 inches (the SPT sarirp k% afterAS•T1 l D 1586). The samples of the in -place soils were returned to our laboratory for Mseificatiori by'a geotechnical engineer. The samples were classified in general accordance with the •Unified Soil Classification System (ASTM D 2488). • • • • • • • Based on visual classifications, the subsoil typically consisted 6 inches of Top Soil: the sub$rfNge condition consisted of Dark Brown Organic Silty Sand underlain by sandy silts with limestone to the boring termination depth. The soil profiles are presented on Sheet 1 in the Appendix. The above subsurface description is of a generalized nature intended to highlight the major subsurface stratification features and material characteristics. The boring logs should be reviewed for specific information at individual boring locations. These records include soil descriptions, stratifications, and penetration resistances. The stratifications shown on the boring logs represent the conditions only at the actual boring locations. Variations may occur and should be expected between boring locations. The stratifications represent the approximate boundary between subsurface materials, and the actual transition may be gradual. Water level information obtained during field operations is also shown on the boring logs. The samples that were not altered by laboratory testing will be retained for 30 days from the date of this report and then will be discarded. Groundwater Information The groundwater table was observed in the two (2) SPT borings at depths ranging from approximately 3.5 to 4.0 feet below existing grade at the time of drilling (June 2018). It should be noted that groundwater levels fluctuate seasonally in response to rainfall and the infiltration rate of the soil. Therefore, at a time of year different from the time of drilling, there is a possibility of a change in the recorded levels. We estimate that during the peak of the wet hydroperiod with rainfall and recharge at a maximum, groundwater levels at the site could be one to two feet higher than those reported herein. We recommend that the contractor determine the actual groundwater levels at the time of construction to assess groundwater impact on the construction procedure. ^PACIFICA^ E -J at"M ELC Flick Residence — Proposed Pool Page 4 Miami Shores, Florida I PACIFICA Project No.: 610-18040 EVALUATION AND RECOMMENDATIONS The geotechnical study completed for the proposed pool confirms that the site is suitable for the planned construction when viewed from a soil mechanics and foundation engineering perspective. Subsurface conditions at the site are not expected to impose any major geotechnical constraints or limitations on the constructed residence. The structures may be supported 9n sballow; spread foundations and employ conventional slab -on -grade. ' ..' .... ...... .... To prepare the site for construction, we recommend that vegetation, topsoil,*,y* * * It materials, boulders, surficial and buried construction debris and organic soils wiftu. She p4m(id construction should be stripped and removed from the construction area. Buriedaoti kt ies and piped , if any, should be located and removed or rerouted as required. Buried pipes that Canfiat be removed should be pressure grouted. All tree and utility removal/excavations should JF;af*kfilljd wjth properly compacted fill as recommended herein. . . : • • • • • Following removal of vegetation from the proposed construction areas, the structural footprint df the proposed pool areas should be proofrolled with a self-propelled roller (Ingersoll Rand SDI OOD or equivalent) with at least 24 passes and until the subsoil achieve 95 percent of maximum dry density (ASTM D 1557) to a depth of at least 12 inches below the stripped grade. The soil densification should encompass the entire footprint of the structure plus a 5-foot wide perimeter that extends beyond the maximum lines of the superstructures. Ground vibrations induced by the compaction operations should be closely monitored to assess if there is a potential impact to the existing building. The roller may need to be operated in static mode in vibration sensitive areas. Following site preparation as discussed herein, the pool areas should be excavated and 24 inches below the pool subgrade should be compacted with a heavy roller to the above mentioned 95% criteria. Unsuitable material or organic soils (if any) found at foundation bottoms should be removed and replaced with structural fill, as discussed above. The footings should be formed and poured in - the -dry. Prior to placing the steel for the footings, the footing subgrade should be inspected by a PACIFICA representative. The pool should be adequately designed to resist hydrostatic/uplift. The below grade wall should be designed to resist earth pressure from granular backfill, surcharge loads, and unbalanced hydrostatic forces. For walls that are not restrained during backfilling but are free to rotate at the top, active earth pressure should be used in design. Walls that are restrained should be designed assuming at -rest earth pressure. In cases where the wall moves into the backfill, passive earth pressure criteria should be used. Recommended equivalent fluid densities for each pressure condition with no allowance for surcharge loads are presented. POOLGUARD IS A SAFETY ALARM SYSTEM AND NOT A LIFE SAVING DEVICE. "This device is not intended to replace any other safety consideration - i.e., adult supervision, lifeguards, fences, gates, pool covers, locks, etc., and some devices may not detect gradual entry." POOLGUARD is the result of quality design and manufacturing techniques that are a standard at PBM Industries, Inc.; a company dedicated to high quality products. POOLGUARD is a result of that dedication and we guarantee and' stand behind' the POOLGUARD alarm system. POOLGUARD pool alarms are verified by ETL to the ASTM safety and performance stan- dard for pool alarms, ASTM F2208. POOLGUARD is an electronic monitoring system that automatically sounds an alarm when children or pets fall into your unsupervised pool. POOLGUARD is a .portable,, self-contained, lightweight unit that is safe and simple to operate. Entry into the pool will be detected by the unit's electronic sensor, triggering a loud pulsating alarm and an internal RF transmitter. The remote receiver will receive the transmitted signal and sound an alarm within the home. INSPECTION POOLGUARD is packaged in a shipping carton that minimizes the chance of damage due to handling. '1111: r F To ensure the placement of the alarm provides adequate coverage in the pool, perform the following simple test: • Place POOLGUARD at your selected location in the pool. • Push an object of appropriate volume and weight off the deck edge furthest from the alarm. A four (4) gallon jug of water or 3 one (1) gallon jugs of water tied together are ideal for testing. The alarm should sound when the water action caused by the intrusion reaches the unit. It may take a few seconds for the alarm to react to the water action. -After resetting the alarm and allowing time for the water action to settle, repeat the procedure from another point in the pool until you are confident of detection performance. • Proper selection of a location is important. If possible, this location should be used everytime. _, , E ri The POOLGUARD unit should not be placed too close to a return line from the filter area. Water turbulence may be too strong and falsely set the alarm off. If you have more than 2 return lines please call customer service at 1-800-242-7163. It is very important in pools to adjust all the eyeball fittings -on your return lines s-o they will -not interfere with your pool alarm. It is not necessary to point your eyeball up for your pool to circulate properly. If the water is swirling on top of the pool this makes the pool to turbulent for your alarm to work properly. Point the eyeball down and your pool will still circulate properly and allow your alarm to function properly. If you point the eyeball fitting .up, your alarm may not function properly. False alarms can be minimized; however, it is important to remember that a false alarm is better than no alarm at all. WEATHER & WIND—POOLGUARD sets stationary on the deck of the pool so the wind will not effect the alarm unit itself. Wind may trigger a false alarm if it is strong, enough or steady enough that it causes the water in the pool to rock or bounce up and down the pool wall. When the water in the pool moves up and down the POOLGUARD sensing throat, it may finally cause the alarm to sound. On extremely windy days when the pool water is rocking it is advised to remove the POOLGUARD from the pool. Light wind or rain will not effect the POOLGUARD alarm. Another false alarm occurs when the pool owner tries. -to install the -alarm too soon after swimming. After swimming, the water in the pool will rock or bounce up and down the pool wall for some time depending on the size of the pool and the type of swimming activity. Before installing the alarm, after swimming, the pool must be given time to calm. Time will vary (around 10 to 30 minutes); once the pool owner sees that the pool water is no longer rocking up- and down the pool- wall, it is time- to- install the alarm. Installing the alarm can be confusing to some pool owners. The sensing throat cannot be less than 2 inches in the water, and not more than 7 inches into the water. POOLGUARD recommends that the sensing throat be approximately 4 inches in the water. POOLGUARD can be used with a solar cover; however, before removing the cover, the alarm should -be -taken out so -it does -not -get pulled -into the -pool. mik Drop something of approximate size, weight and volume of the families smallest child, the farthest point away from the alarm. A four (4) gallon jug of water or 3 one (1-) gallon jugs, of water tied- together are ideal for testing. Remember, when testing you must wait about 15 minutes between tests for the pool to calm. Maximum Range for the remote is 200 feet from the poolside unit. Avoid placing remote in basements or close to metal walls. Be sure that the red light on the remote is on. Remember the poolside unit must be beeping (alarming) for the remote to work. If your remote receiver is not getting a clear signal or no signal from the poolside unit, try the following: Before plugging in the power supply, be sure to stretch out the cord; do not leave it tied in a bow as packaged. When you first plug in the remote it will give one short loud beep then stop. Your Remote Receiver is similar to, a small portable radio. If your remote is not sounding when the poolside unit is sounding —move the remote to different locations and, stand back for a few seconds for the remote to pick up the signal. You may only -have to move your remote a little to the left or right to bring in the signal —in some cases you might have to move the remote to a different location or another room.
