2019-05-14 FAC Minutes Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on May 14, 2019. Members present: Susan Ackley David Baker Carol Hoffman Miryam Rojas Michael Stock Members absent: Victor Bruce Joe Clark Also present: Angela Dorney, Recreation Director Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant The meeting was called to order at 5:45 p.m. Ms. Hoffman made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 8, 2019 meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. The remainder of the Commission’s FY 2019 budget will be allocated the two Egret ads ($936) and art supplies for the mural wall ($136). Mr. Clark has related that the cost estimate to paint the mural wall from local artists is $2500. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve $50 for a book donation for the Memorial Day program. Motion seconded by Ms. Rojas and unanimously approved. Discussion turned to the selection for the October artist exhibition. Ms. Ackley contacted The Bakehouse for a 6 week art exhibit and received the selections offered. Mr. Stock suggested the Commission present two selections to the library board and let them decide on the final artist. It was noted there has been no date selected for the October exhibit. Ms. Ackley, Ms. Rojas and Mr. Baker suggested the Commission present Mateo to the library board for the exhibition. Mr. Stock and Ms. Hoffman abstained from voting. Discussion turned to having a pop up event in downtown Miami Shores. It was suggested having a budget of $500 per event. This would cover publicity, sound and artist fee. Mr. Stock suggested hiring an opera singer for pop up events for the entire year; number of events is to be determined. Mr. Baker suggested tying this into an upcoming event. Discussion turned to the name change of the Fine Arts Commission. Mr. Stock is opposed to a name change. Ms. Hoffman suggested Arts and Culture Commission, Ms. Ackley suggested Cultural Arts in the name and Mr. Baker suggested Shores Arts Commission. It was decided to table discussion until the July meeting. Ms. Hoffman suggested local artist Geoff Lee (violin maker) for future events. Ms. Hoffman will contact Mr. Lee for his ciriculum vitae. Discussion turned to the selection of seven art pieces (out of nine samples) from artist Courtney Einhorn for the wrapped utility boxes. It was suggested having a final vote at a public meeting on Friday to gather input from all members. The meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.
