We submit the following information for your consideration: That the lot was in the county at the time the building was begun in July 1937, when a 501 lot was sufficient to enable us to build a porte- cochere and 14 feet were alloted on the west side for that purpose. That because of financial reasons we were unable to complete the building until now, although a hot water tank was installed in the building and a written agreement entered into with the Solar Water Heater Company of Miami to complete the installation when the Porte- cochere was erected. This fact is evidenced by the attached letter from the Solar Water Heater Company, giving date, dimensions, etc. We have fourteen feet on the west side of the house and most earnestly ask your permission to build the 10' x 21' Porte - cochere which was originally planned and without which it will be impossible to complete our home and finish the installation of the solar water system. At that time the roof was covered with asphalt shingles which were in poor condition, and there was no sign of a truck. In view of the overall excellent maintenance of the yard, I did not send a notice. Since that time, the shingles were replaced with a mopped 90# slate roof, and the truck appeared. The peeling paint was also noticed. Our records do not contain permits for roof work, either recent or five years ago. The original roof was wood shingle (according to plans), and apparently was replaced with asphalt shingles. Both these roof coverings are non - conforming, and any re- roofing must be approved by the Planning and Zoning Board. The engineering report enclosed in this letter indicates clearly that the current roof structure could not withstand the weight of a cement tile roof. Since this home was built at a date that was prior to the enactment of your ordinance, I would request that you consider strongly waiving the requirement in this case.
