MIAMI SHORES VILLAGE HALL CONFERENCE ROOM
6:00 PM
The meeting was called to order at 6:07pm by Mr. Netto with the following members present:
Antonio Netto
Tiffany Anderson
Dana Vignale
Patricia Walker
Leslie Fraser
Sylvie Duerkop
Absent: Doug Garber and Christina Crespi
Also present: Ysabely Rodriguez, Village Clerk
1. Public Comments
No public comments were offered.
2. Approval of Minutes:
Ms. Walker moved to approve the January 31, 2019 minutes; Ms. Fraser seconded the motion and the
minutes were approved unanimously.
3. Discussion of Business:
A) Ms. Vignale shared the PowerPoint presentation of the survey results, based on 100 surveys. 19
more had already arrived as of that afternoon and the results will be updated. Mr. Netto will add
some of the results from the paper surveys that were collected at Green Day. The results will also
be shared with Mayor Glinn. Mr. Netto moved, and Ms. Anderson seconded, to have Ms. Vignale
create a summary of the results and a conclusion for each slide. The move was approved
unanimously. Ms. Walker made a motion for Mr. Netto to share the results with Ms. Swain at the
earliest possible opportunity, Ms. Fraser seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
B) Academic information regarding school performance is of concern compared to neighboring
schools. The percentage of students choosing not to attend MSE is high, and a comparison was
made to Sunset and Pinecrest, whose home school attendance is over 80%.
C) The Board agreed that we will add one more week’s data before a preliminary finalizing of the
survey, although results received after that date may still be included in the future.
D) The perceptions were analyzed and it was agreed that the Gifted Program at MSE is considered a
strong program, and the program most desired at MSE would be a rigorous academic curriculum
such as Cambridge or IB. In addition to the survey responses, this is evidenced by the fact that
101 students who are assigned to MSE attend iPrep. The Board agreed it should be a priority to
consider adding the Cambridge program at MSE, especially considering it exists at Horace Mann
Middle.
E) The Miami Shores Elementary Open House is scheduled for Thursday, March 31, from 9:00 to
10:00am. Mr. Netto will try to contact Ms. Swain to see if she would like some members of the
EAB to attend and offer support. The Board agreed that marketing the school should be a priority,
and these efforts should include a monthly entry in the school section of the Egret, and an
updating of the school’s website. Survey data showed that most parents look for information
about schools on the school’s website. Mr. Netto has tried to reach Ms. Swain to see if there are
any District-sponsored events planned at the school but has not yet had a response. He will
suggest to Ms. Swain that they have a presence at Unity Day, at which time they can advertise the
3/21 Open House.
Ms. Rodriguez stated that each council board is responsible for presenting an annual report. We are
currently scheduled to present at the June 19, 2019, meeting, but Mr. Netto requested that we present
instead at the July meeting, giving us almost a full year of information.
Next meeting: Thursday, March 21, 2019, at 6:00pm in the Village Hall Conference Room.
Mr. Netto moved to adjourn the meeting at 7:36; Ms. Walker seconded, and the motion carried
unanimously.
Next meeting is March 21, 2019. We will discuss the Open House.
