The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.
Mr. Geimer made a motion to approve the minutes of the December 3, 2018, meeting.
Motion seconded by Mr. O’Hara and unanimously approved.
Discussion turned to the recreation center. At the last meeting, Committee members
identified areas in the center to either renovate or update. Ms. Dorney said that in
February/March capital improvements for the next year are selected and presented to the
Village Manager who will decide which projects will be presented to Council for approval.
Ms. Dorney related that the first quote for window treatments for the center was $12,000.
Additional quotes will be needed. Mr. O’Hara suggested finishing improvements in the
Auditorium rather than piecing together projects in individual rooms. Mr. Hadad asked for an
itemized list of projects needed and then prioritize/price the projects. It was noted that from a
budget prospective, it is more cost effective to price out the entire building rather than room by
room.
Ms. Dorney noted that Shipwreck Cove structure is a current priority, with a cost of up to one
million dollars for replacement.
In regard to the parks and open space plan, Ms. Dorney said that the planning and zoning
board, one recreation advisory member and the recreation director will meet to prepare an
R.A.C. mtg., 1/7/19, pg. 2 of 2
RFP to hire a consulting firm. This will be discussed with the Mayor to see if this is the
direction he wishes to proceed with.
It was noted that the quote for AstroTurf to replace the existing mulch at the tot lot might be too
expensive to proceed with.
Upcoming events include an Arbor Day tree giveaway and a community bike ride. It was noted
that the Miami Shores 5k has been cancelled, as there are too many races in Miami Shores
during February.
There will be a pickleball clinic next week. A suggestion was made for an adult basketball
league to see if there is any interest.
The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
