The following utility box locations were deemed to be in the most visible locations by members:
95 St & N Miami Ave, 95 St & NE 2 Ave (Starbucks), 98 St & NE 2 Ave. Ms. Haddocks left
after the tour of the utility boxes was concluded.
Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the minutes of the September 9, 2018 meeting.
Motion seconded by Ms. Rojas and unanimously approved.
It was related the Commission’s FY 2018-2019 budget is $10,000 and the Commission also
received a $4500 grant for concerts for FY ‘19.
Mr. Kunde attended the meeting to show his art work to the Commission for the utility boxes.
His pieces include mangroves, palm trees and ferns. Artist Leonor Anthony’s pieces (Einstein
theories) were also shown. Mr. Bruce noted that Ms. Anthony’s images may not translate well
on the boxes. Ms. Rojas said the images should be more abstract. Ms. Ackley will contact Ms.
Anthony for additional images to present at the November meeting.
Ms. Ackley noted that approval has been received by FDOT and Miami Shores for the utility
boxes, but County approval is still needed.
The Commission would like to select four utility boxes to wrap. The following are the top five
proposed locations: 95 St & N Miami Ave, 95 St & NE 2 Ave, 98 St & NE 2 Ave, 103 St & NW
2 Ave (not in Miami Shores), and 96 St & NE 6 Ave.
Discussion turned to the sculpture garden. Mr. Bruce said that Champion can install a brick
walkway for $500. Ms. Dorney said one bench has been ordered for $430; a concrete slab will
be needed.
Mr. Stock made a motion to approve up to $900 for a sidewalk and concrete slab for the
bench, with applicable permitting. Motion seconded by Ms. Rojas and unanimously
approved.
Discussion turned to the Memorial Park fountain. Ms. Ackley would like to contact artists the
Commission has worked with previously and ask for proposals to upgrade both the inside and
outside wall of the fountain. Ms. Dorney suggested speaking with Mr. Benton first about
modifying the fountain.
Ms. Ackley and Mr. Baker will coordinate with the artist for next week’s art exhibit.
Mr. Stock related that all three bands for the upcoming concerts have secured for $1200 each,
which includes sound.
Commission members discussed possible new logos for a proposed change of name to Miami
Shores Arts Council. Ms. Ackley said Councilman Meltz has agreed to sponsor the name
change at an upcoming Council meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
