TO: ANYONE INTERESTED IN THE FUTURE OF THE MIAMI SHORES
COUNTRY CLUB.
We have been members of the MSCC for a relatively short
period of time - fourteen years . That is long enough to know
that the MSCC once , some years ago, was considered to be a
jewel among area country clubs . It had a fine golf course ,
a well appointed clubhouse, good personnel and excellent
food and service . In short, it had a fine reputation. Also,
back then the price was right .
But thenthe world changed and the MSCC was forced to
change with it . Unfortunately, not for the better. Due to
inflation the cost of operating country clubs went up every-
where . Due to mismanagement this golf course deteriorated
to the point where it was almost an embarrassment. At one
time members felt forced to go out by themselves and dig
weeds out of the fairways . The clubhouse aged and lost its
style . Equipment became second rate because of increased
costs and declining membership. Even without making im-
provements the club found itself with a substantial loss
on the books . So, approximately five years ago the Village
Council decided to turn the club over to new management .
This is .what the new management was faced with in
those five years .
*A complete renovation of the golf course . A
renovation of the clubhouse . New equipment for the
kitchen. Special refurbishing of the dining areas .
*Through no fault of their own a reconfiguration
of the golf course due to legal problems with the
driving range .
Again, through no fault of their own, another
reconfiguration of the golf course brought about
by legal problems with the railroad crossings .
*A serious decline in membership
What has the new management accomplished in those
five years?
*The golf course has been substantially improved
and more improvements are scheduled.
*The clubhouse has been tastefully refurbished and
special attention has been given to the dining
areas . New furniture has been added.
*New equipment has been purchased for the CDurse
and kitchen.
*Operating personnel have been upgraded and con-
tinue to be upgraded.
*The food and service has been upgraded to the
point where members can bring their friends and
families and be proud of the facility.
*The problem with membership had to be addressed
immediately and it was . Some steps that were
necessary then will not be necessary in the future
when all of the improvements above are continued .
This is not a paid commercial . It is an unsolicited
letter. Why write it?
Both of us like to play golf and want to continue
playing golf at MSCC. There is a natural , negative
reaction to anything that increases one ' s own personal
expenses . When we received the bill for our 1996 dues
we were not happy with the percentages of the increases .
Now, after sitting down and analyzing the situation, we
believe that what has been done was necessary for the
salvation of the club. We also believe there is (veryLL
evidence that the new management has made substantial
changes for positive progress and will continue to make
substantial changes for positive progress . As a conse-
quence - rather than complain, we believe the 1996
increases are a good investment and a bargain. Finally,
we also believe that any reasonable check of other area
clubs will prove us right .
Sincerely,
Kay and Hank Davis
