10-28-1992 Regular Meeting MIAMI SHORES COUNTRY CLUB
ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
OCTOBER 28, 1992
Present: Lewis Harms, Chairman; Richard Thornton; Richard J.
Haft; Joe Schwartz; Ernest Upthegrove; Nina Huston;
and Johnny LaPonzina, on behalf of PCM.
Also attending: Alberto Pozzi, General Manager; Mike
Walsh;
Absent: Agnes Aspinall and Joseph Obermeyer
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Harms at 5 : 35 PM.
I. Report by Mr. LaPonzina:
1 . Railroad Crossing: The County has approved the
expenditure of $63 , 000. and the work hopefully will
be completed by the beginning of the year ( see
Memorandum attached) .
2 . Review of new configuration of the golf course. Mr.
Thornton will again work with Mike Walsh on the
design of the new score card as well as on handicapping
the holes.
3 . Hurricane clean-up:
A. As discussed at the last meeting, the capital
programs adopted prior to "Andrew" have gone
forward:
I. Bathrooms on the course are presently being
modernized, with the first already
completed.
II . Many improvements to cart paths have been
completed, sodding yet to be done.
III . 75 new golf carts are being delivered on
October 30, 1992 .
IV. Beautification: renovation of landscaping
and planting of annuals around Clubhouse
and Pro Shop; repainting of Clubhouse;
V. Renovation of men ' s locker room with new
carpeting, and repainting of lockers and
the installation of new furniture.

B. PCM has spent so far $55 , 000 . on these long-
term improvements.
C. In response to Mr. Thornton' s question about
how can water leaking into the men' s locker
room be stopped; we will install a high power,
sump pump to pump storm water to a canal.
D. The condition of the golf course is excellent.
II. Discussion of current membership drive: Despite lowered
prices, there is a reduced number of membership renewals
and new members . As of the present, there are approximately
250 members, down approximately 25, as to golf and about
40 as to tennis . In this latter regard, Mr. Schwartz will
personally contact the non-renewing old tennis members .
The foregoing decline is occurring notwithstanding the
absence of negative comments about the Club by the non-
renewing former members. The causes may be: (I ) reduced
interest rates and their effect on fixed incomes; (II )
persons moving north to Broward; and ( III ) the intervention
of "Andrew. "
III . Financial condition of the Club. Conequently, in light
of the above, the Club is in bad shape economically. Mr.
LaPonzina was not receptive to Mr. Thornton' s suggestion
to consider combining with the Presidential, Miami Shores
being a fairly upscale basically private country club
with a good golf course, in contrast with the Presidential.
PCM has borrowed funds to clean up the clubhouse and the
course. FEMA hopefully will reimburse, at least partially.
However, there is a pressing need to renegotiate the lease
with the Village, which has granted a 3-month deferment
of rent payments. Mr. LaPonzina read a letter from Mr.
Jack Kain, a Miami Shores resident, entreating the Village
to work with PCM. Copy of this letter is attached hereto
and constitutes part of these minutes. PCM will formulate
a specific proposal and will meet first with the Village
Manager to review same in advance of the Village Council
meeting of December 15, 1992 this matter being on the agenda
for such meeting.
The unanimous consensus of the Advisory Board applauded
PCM for restoring the course notwithstanding "Andrew" and
for continuing with the previously planned capital
improvements and expressed hope that the Village and PCM
could arrive at an acceptable accomodation to PCM' s
problems at the Club. The Board took notice of the fact
that PCM is continuing to run a good operation at the Club.
Mr. LaPonzina stressed the need to solicit memberships
to make up for the $400 , 000--$500, 000 shortfall in
memberships. Mr. Schwartz suggested that the Club contact
all the realtors active in Miami Shores to explain what
an excellent selling tool the existence of the Club is .
Mr. LaPonzina felt that this was a fine idea. The Club
will follow up, by inviting the Realtors to the Club
for a social gathering in order to make a presentation.
In view of the fact that the last Wednesday of November is the
day before Thanksgiving, the next meeting will be held on
Wednesday, December 2, 1992, at 5 : 30PM.
Respectfully submitted,
RICHARD J. HAFT, Secretary
