MIAMI SHORES COUNTRY CLUB
ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
September 30, 1992
Present: Lewis Harms, Chairman; Richard Thornton; Richard J.
Haft; Agnes Aspinall ; Joseph Obermeyer; Joe Schwartz ;
and Johnny LaPonzina, on behalf of PCM.
Also attending: Ms . Gail MacDonald, Village Manager;
Alberto Pozzi, General Manager; Mike Walsh; and Rick
Weber (Director, Bonaventure Golf) .
Excused: Ernest Upthegrove.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Harms at 5 : 35 PM.
I . Report by Mr. LaPonzina:
1 . To bring the members up to date, Mr. LaPonzina first
mentioned two negatives: ( i ) the Club was actively
marketing memberships when the hurricane hit; and
( ii ) the course sustained substantial damage, e.g.
380 trees destroyed.
2 . PCM immediately committed to restore the course and
it reopened just 5 days after "Andrew. " PCM has funded
not less than $200 , 000 to date and expects to complete
. the clean-up by October 3 , 1992 . The .Village is
attempting to secure financial assistance from FEMA
( the Federal Emergency Management Agency) .
3 . PCM will go forward with the capital programs which
were in place before the storm:
A. Purchase of 75 E-Z Go golf carts :
B. Installation of new cart paths :
C. Redoing all bathrooms on the golf course and
at the tennis courts.
4 . Mr. LaPonzina is seeking the support from the Advisory
Board and the membership to promote members, inasmuch
as last year at this time, approximately $900 , 000 .
in membership renewals had been collected and this
year just $400, 000 . with strenuous marketing efforts
continuing. So far the phone campaign has been
disappointing.

5 . PCM, which has funded the clean-up to date, has
petitioned the Village Council for an abatement of
rent, which presently is a minimum of $15, 000 . per
month. The Council has agreed to defer the rent for
90 days then review the Club ' s operating statement.
6 . Walkers, who still must be grandfathered in, will
be permitted to walk without payment of trail fee .
7 . Railroad Crossing: PCM attorneys will appear before
County Commission on October 14, 1992, to secure the
proper approval, whereupon a permit can be pulled
and the work finally proceed.
8 . The following problems have arisen:
A. Certain applicants have been determined to
be non-residents, notwithstanding statements
to the contrary in their applications. Once
this fact is verified, the Village Manager
and the Club will jointly write to the
applicant demanding the difference in dues.
If the applicant refused to pay, the Club
intends not to refund any moneys theretofore
paid.
B. Couples, who are unmarried, attempting to
join as a family will not be accepted.
9 . Food and Beverage: Alberto Pozzi stated that this
department will show a slight profit, even with the
$8. 95 dinners and brunch, as the catering business
is profitable.
II . Mr. Obermeyer suggested that, with respect to the issue
of rent deferral or abatement, the Club might offer the Village
the payment of the percentage rent without, however, being
subject to the present minimum.
At 6 : 40 P.M. Ms . MacDonald departed.
III . Inquiry by Mr. Harms : As to cart fees, same will remain
the same; as to the coupons to play the course, the price will
increase in November.
The meeting was adjourned at 6 : 45 P.M. Next meeting: Oct. 28,
1992, at 5 : 30 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
RICHARD J. HAFT, Secretary
