2014-09-15 RAC MINUTES Minutes of the Recreation Advisory Committee held on September 15, 2014. Members present: Kendra Borja Kristin David Cawn Jonathan Meltz Michael O’Hara William Reich Christia Alou White Ken Whittaker Amy Wiborg Members absent: Bill Wolk Also present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant Angela Dorney, Recreation Superintendent Jacob Strouse, Cross Country (Miami Country Day) The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. Ms. Alou made a motion to approve the minutes of the June 2, 2014, meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Meltz and unanimously approved. Mr. Estep said that summer camp went very well, with all camps full or nearly full. Registration for soccer has begun with 189 registered; 64 enrolled in flag football and 68 in aftercare. Mr. Estep reported that the Village has visited multiple recreation departments, including Coral Gables, Miami Gardens, Miami Springs and Key Biscayne for ideas on a new center for Miami Shores. Key Biscayne’s center is the most similar to what Miami Shores would like. The Village will need to hire a company to verify what is needed for a new center then an architect will need to draw up a plan and finally a bond issue will be put on the ballot. The process will take between 3 – 5 years to have a $12 – 14 million dollar facility built. The vision for a new facility is a 30,000 square foot facility. It is too late to put this on the April ballot but it could be possible to piggyback a bond issue onto a county wide election. Discussion turned to the Miami Shores 5K run set for November 2. Jacob Strouse who is on the cross country team at Miami Country Day has offered to organize pacers for the run. Jacob Strouse also suggested having a pasta night for the racers with area restaurants offering discounting pricing but it was decided to hold off on this until next year since this would be offered the same night as the Unity Ball. At this time are sponsorships totaling $3000 for the event. Mr. O’Hara suggested raffling off a 5K entry at Green Day. R.A.C. mtg., 9/15/14, pg. 2 of 2 A suggestion was made to have portable scoreboards on the fields for teams playing. Mr. Estep will look into this and see if there are scoreboards made that are LED operated that don’t use electricity since power is an issue on the fields. Mr. Reich said that he has heard complaints about Shipwreck Cove closing early. Mr. Estep said this is a manpower issue; it is not financially feasible. Mr. Estep noted that the Village Attorney just approved the RFP (request for proposal) for a swim team coach. Also, the request for use of Barry’s fields for travel soccer has been sent, and we are awaiting a response. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
