Michael O’Hara William Reich
Members absent: Ken Whittaker
Also present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director
Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant
Robert Frame, Resident
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.
Mr. O’Hara made a motion to approve the minutes of the January 29, 2015,
meeting. Motion seconded by Ms. Alou and unanimously approved.
Mr. Estep related that baseball registration is presently ongoing and the program will
begin within the next two weeks. The pool is currently undergoing rehab in preparation
for the opening of the season. Samples of rubber flooring are being tested. Shipwreck
Cove has been acid washed and refilled. Mr. Estep is also working with Ken Ballard on
finalizing the survey on the new community center to be mailed out to the residents. Mr.
Ballard should be back in mid-March to plan community meetings.
Mr. Meltz expressed concern over the schedule changes with the basketball program.
Mr. Estep said that the schedule cannot always be controlled; there may also be
scheduling conflicts with other recreation departments.
Discussion turned to new business. Mr. Meltz noted that scoreboards are needed for
the games; presently, the referees handle the scoring and timing. Miami Springs uses a
portable scoreboard, ‘Score Tronics’ for their games which is mobile and operated on
batteries. The scoreboard is 30” wide and 16” tall and the cost is $1500 per
scoreboard. It was suggested that two scoreboards would be needed for basketball
games. Mr. Ise made a motion to purchase two ScoreTronic portable scoreboards
at a cost of $1500/each. Motion seconded by Ms. Alou and unanimously
approved.
Mr. Ise noted there is an upcoming bike safety meeting that includes a study about
signage/crosswalks for Miami Shores to provide safety for both bikers and runners.

Mr. Ise also noted that in talking to residents residing within a two block radius of the
community center, they seem ‘unsure’ about a new recreation center and the traffic it
will bring. Mr. Estep said that community meetings will be held to discuss any concerns.
Mr. Estep said there is no ‘Plan B’ for a center, but depending on the results of the
survey, a plan could be developed. We are in the planning stages now; feedback is
essential.
Robert Frame, a resident who lives across the street from the Comm. Center,is
concerned about a new center, including the cost and the aesthetics of a new facility.
Mr. Estep said there will be two Village wide meetings. There will also be a meeting
with residents in the immediate area.
Mr. Ise asked if food could be brought into the pool now. Mr. Estep says the concern is
what is being brought in (glass containers, etc.). Also, the concession is a revenue
source to the pool.
The meeting adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
