2016-09-12 RAC Minutes
Minutes of the Recreation Advisory Committee held on September 12, 2016.
Members present: Christia Alou Daniel Brady
Manuel Hadad Jonathan Meltz
Ken Whittaker
Members absent: Kendra Borja John Ise
Jacqueline O’Donnell Felipe Villamizar
Also present: Angela Dorney, Interim Recreation Director
Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.
Mr. Brady made a motion to approve the minutes of the June 6, 2016, meeting. Motion
seconded by Ms. Alou and unanimously approved.
Ms. Dorney gave a summary of the recreation programs at this time. There are 73 enrolled in
the aftercare program. The most recent kids day off program had 55 in attendance. Fit 4 Fun
has 15 enrolled. Registration for intramural soccer began this past Saturday.
It was noted that Shipwreck Cove will be closing for the season on September 18 and Dog Day
at the pool is scheduled for September 24. A suggestion was made for Shipwreck Cove to
remain open longer but it was not related that the numbers do not warrant prolonging the
season. It was noted that the swim team is very successful and the Village is currently
negotiating a contract for FY 2016-2017.
It was related that the Miami Shores Community Alliance has rented out the aquatic facility on
October 15 for their ‘Margaritavillage’ fundraiser.
The Miami Shores 5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Sunday November 13.
It was noted that summer camp did very well overall, but it the numbers enrolled for swim camp
this year went down.
Discussion turned to the new recreation center. Ms. Dorney said that an RFP has been sent out
for the architectural design of the new center. There have been five responses to the RFP. Ms.
Dorney noted that without nonresidents in the new recreation center, the center would not
financially succeed. Mr. Hadad is concerned about the impact a new facility would have on the
parking as well as the design of a new center. It was related that every new recreation center
that has expanded is now building additions due to the small size. After a design is drawn up,
an informational campaign to various community groups will need to be started.
Discussion turned to the Dog Park. It was noted that the Village Council has approved a dog
park to be built in front of the aquatic center. Parking is still a concern for the dog park as well
as for pool patrons.
R.A.C. mtg., 9/12/16, pg. 2 of 2
There was concern expressed for the fencing around Constitution Park as there is no plan for
any design. The fencing is needed for the safety of the aftercare program as well as the soccer
program.
It was noted that the Village has recently purchased the Catholic Services building on NE 2nd
Avenue.
The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
