2016-04-11 RAC Minutes
Minutes of the Recreation Advisory Committee held on April 11, 2016.
Members present: Christia Alou Daniel Brady
Manuel Hadad John Ise
Jonathan Meltz Jacqueline O’Donnell
Felipe Villamizar Ken Whittaker
Members absent: Kendra Borja
Also present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director
Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.
At this time new member Felipe Villamizar was introduced to the Committee members.
Mr. Brady made a motion to approve the minutes of the February 8, 2016, meeting.
Motion seconded by Mr. Meltz and unanimously approved.
Mr. Estep gave a summary of the recreation programs at this time. Unity Day was well attended
this year. It was noted that 1100 candy bags were distributed at the Marshmallow Drop/Egg
Dive this year. The Fine Arts spring concert was also well attended. The community bike ride
had an estimated 45-50 riders in attendance. It was noted that the swim team enrollment is up
to 100. The swim team is participating in competitions and hosting competitions at the aquatic
center. It was related that baseball/softball has 179 enrolled, aftercare has 71 enrolled and
spring break camps averaged between 40-50 per day.
Discussion turned to the new recreation center. A 52,000 square foot facility with underground
parking will cost $17 million and $15 million with surface parking. The center would have 40
parking spaces plus the church parking. There would also be a designated drop off area. The
hand courts will be made available for use at the Country Club. Mr. Estep noted that Ken
Ballard will be reworking the operational costs and design which will then be presented to
Council for their input. An early May meeting with Council is the goal. The first option is to go
on the August ballot since it is not realistic for this item to go on the November ballot. It would
be a rush to get the word out for an August election. It was noted that non-residents pay 40% of
the operational costs and account for 25-30% of a program’s participation. The second option is
to wait until 2017 to be put on the ballot. Mr. Estep said that the Village cannot promote a new
recreation center but can offer options.
Discussion turned to a dog park. The Council suggested a possible location could be the Britto
triangle of space at the Aquatic Center. Parking would need to be added at the north end of the
pool.
The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
