RESOLUTION NO. 2018 -24
A RESOLUTION OF THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF MIAMI SHORES
VILLAGE, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE WORLD HEALTH
ORGANIZATION'S AGE - FRIENDLY CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
PROGRAM AND APPROVING THE VILLAGE'S ENROLLMENT
INTO THE AARP AGE- FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES INITIATIVE;
PROVIDING FOR TRANSMITTAL; PROVIDING FOR
AUTHORIZATION; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, in the United States, the population of people aged 65 and over is
expected to grow from 35 million in 2000 to 88.5 million by 2050, taking the total share of
the 65+ population from 12 percent to 20 percent of the total population; and
WHEREAS, as of 2017, Miami Shores Village's older adult population age 65 and
over represented 13.2% of its population; and
WHEREAS, the World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a Global Network
of Age - Friendly Cities and Communities to encourage and promote public policies to
increase the number of cities and communities that support healthy aging and thereby
improve the health, well- being, satisfaction, and quality of life for older Americans; and
WHEREAS, the benefits of joining the Network include, but are not limited to, access
to key information about best practices among age- friendly communities, access to a global
network of participating communities, and public recognition of the Village's commitment to
become more age - friendly; and
WHEREAS, active aging is a life -long process, whereby an age - friendly community
is not just "elder- friendly" but also intended to be friendly for all ages; and
WHEREAS, the WHO recognizes that counties, cities and communities have different
needs, resources, and varying capacities to engage their resources to take action to
facilitate active aging; and
WHEREAS, the Village Council finds that the passage of this Resolution is in the
best interest and welfare of the residents of the Village.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE VILLAGE COUNCIL OF MIAMI
SHORES VILLAGE THAT:
Section 1: Village Council Support. Miami Shores Village supports initiatives
and opportunities to engage in the WHO Age - Friendly Cities and Communities Network of
municipalities and the Village's enrollment into the AARP Network of Age - Friendly
Communities.
Section 2: Transmittal. The Village Clerk is hereby directed to transmit a copy of
this Resolution to the AARP along with the required membership application.

1 Section 3: Authorization. The Village Manager is authorized to take any and all
2 steps necessary to implement the intent and purpose of this Resolution.

4 Section 4: Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective upon its
5 Passage.
