Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on November 14, 2017.
Members present: Susan Ackley David Baker
Lorena Bracho-Mijares Victor Bruce
Madeleine Haddocks Miryam Rojas
Michael Stock
Also present: Angela Dorney, Interim Recreation Director
Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant
Hadorem Bennet
The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m.
Self-introductions were made with new Commission member David Baker.
Mr. Stock made a motion to elect Ms. Ackley Chair of the Commission. Motion
seconded by Ms. Haddocks and unanimously approved. Mr. Stock made a
motion to elect Mr. Bruce as Vice Chair of the Commission. Motion seconded by
Ms. Mijares and unanimously approved.
Hadorem Bennet was introduced to the Commission. Mr. Bennet is the author of a
series of short play (five fifteen minute plays) that are being considered. Ms. Ackley felt
that the plays start off a bit slow, building the storyline and then sped up for the
conclusion. Mr. Bennet has selected five scripts for the Commission that have socially
provocative issues. The Commission needs to decide if they need to present more
family friendly plots instead. Mr. Stock noted that an improv group could provide
entertainment involving the audience at half the cost.
It was related that the Commission will not be able to have Gallery Night at the library
since there will be a Black History Month display during the month of February.
Mr. Bennet explained how the short play series would work. There is a transition
between each play such as a music segment or a poem. The plays usually raise
awareness of issues presented. The troupe has been sponsored by Barry and has
performed shows in Wynwood and the Overtown Youth Center. It was suggested that
Mr. Bennet present a performance to the Commission before the December meeting.
Ms. Rojas suggested doing the play series on February 9, the original date of Gallery
Night.
Ms. Rojas made a motion to approve the minutes of the October 10th meeting.
Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved.

It was related that a traffic study costs $400 and would take a week to complete. It was
also noted that the proposed sculpture park may drain the Commission's budget with all
the associated costs.
For the January Moonlight Concert Mr. Stock recommended Nmbr 11, a bluesy rock
music duo. They would cost $800 and would run their own sound. The February
Fireside Concert would be performed by Hair of the Dawg, Jerry Garcia type music for
$800. They would provide their own sound system.
Discussion turned to Egret advertising. A six-unit ad is less than a third of a page. An
eight-unit ad costs $495 and a full page ad would cost $695. It was noted that a banner
on the front cover costs $500. Ms. Rojas would like to see how people are hearing
about Commission events and see what is the best marketing tool.
Unity Day could be a doodle wall or possibly a paint by numbers area.
It was related that there is a Village code prohibiting having a mural wall, in reference to
a mural on the back wall of the Community Center. Mr. Bruce suggested asking for a
variance from Council for the mural. The Commission needs to find out what the code
actually says and then make a presentation to Planning & Zoning.
The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
