Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on October 10, 2017.

The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m.
Mr. Kodsi made a motion to approve the minutes of the August 8, 2017 meeting.
Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved.
It was related that the Commission's FY 2017-2018 budget was approved for $10,000.
Alberto Cavalieri will be installing his work this week for this Friday's library exhibit. The
truck rental to transport the exhibited pieces (install and deinstall) will cost
approximately $320. Mr. Stock has volunteered to be in charge of the music. But a
bartender will be needed to serve the wine since Bob Bourne is unable to attend. Mr.
Kodsi made a motion to approve $150 for miscellaneous spending for the exhibit.
Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved.
Discussion turned to the three Fine Arts concerts planned for the upcoming year;
namely Moonlight, Fireside and Spring concerts. It was noted that there will be no Unity
Ball this year, but there will be a Mayor's Ball. Ms. Ackley suggested Angel Diaz for the
Spring Concert for $1,000. In regard to the Fireside Concert, Ms. Dorney related that
TY Park has an event where they sell a 'kit' to make s'mores. Ms. Ackley expressed
concern for children around the fire. It was noted that a bigger fire pit is planned. Mr.
Stock suggested either Hair of the Dawg (acoustic Grateful Dead type music) or Bob
(rock music). Tentative dates for upcoming Fine Arts events are January 12 (Moonlight
Concert), February 9 (Gallery Night), February 23 (Fireside Concert) and March 18
(Spring Concert). A suggestion was made to have the back of the bands face the
railroad tracks, but Ms. Dorney noted there is no electric close to the tracks. Ms. Rojas
made a motion to allow Mr. Stock to negotiate with Hair of the Dawg and Bob for
up to $800 for either January 12 or February 23 and up to $1,000 for Angel Diaz
for the March 18 Spring Concert. Motion seconded by Mr. Bruce and
unanimously approved.
Discussion turned to the Community Center back wall. Mr. Bruce suggested mesh art,
a similar material to the wind screens around the tennis center. It was noted that artist
Pedro Rubio is very interested in the art on the back wall. It was noted the area is 60 x
30. There would be an artist fee plus the cost of the screen.

Locations for art in public places include NE 6th Avenue near Publix, the island on the
west side of Constitution Park and the back wall of the Community Center. Mr. Benton
expressed concern for the location on 96th and the Bay due to the tides as well as the
triangle area on Biscayne Blvd by St. Martha's since the area is used for church
parking.
It was noted that Unity Day is March 3. Mr. Stock suggested collaborating with Miami
Art League for Unity Day. There was another suggestion to have a 'doodle wall' with
squares that could be painted. Fine Arts would provide sharpies. It was suggested using
a vinyl wall.
Artist Ernesto Kunde was suggested for Village Hall's lobby. Mr. Kunde has laser
cutouts done with acrylic paint.
Discussion turned to new business. Ms. Ackley said playwright Hadarom Bennet has a
series of five individual plays (15 minute plays), with over 30 to choose from. The cost
for the event would be $1,000. Ms. Dorney suggested replacing the April library exhibit
with this short play series.
