The Miami Shores Community Alliance will be meeting on April 22 to discuss grants. Fine Arts has asked for a grant for $5000 for art in public places which includes the cost of an artist. Ms. Ackley noted she would like to expand art in public places and has drafted a letter to Commissioner Edmonson asking for $4000 to expand art in public places to the west side of Miami Shores. Residents feel neglected; they don't attend Council meetings or attend Commission events. Ms. Ackley has scouted out locations to exhibit including the swale area on 95 St. & NW 1 Ave. It was noted that certain height restrictions and breakaway requirements for accidents will need to be met. Additional locations include NW 2 Ave between 99-100 St., the median on NW 2 Ave between 105-111 St. and the median on N Miami Ave and 104 St. The new location will need Council approval. It was suggested having both the location and funding source resolved before approaching Council. Ms. Mijares suggested installing a roundabout on NE 6 Ave. which would be a good location for a sculpture. Ms. Haddocks suggested art on the barrier of the fountain at Memorial Park. Mr. Stock suggested that artists could create banners to post on streets on NE 2 Ave. It was noted that art in public places should be where people walk, run or congregate, not necessarily in downtown Shores. Ms. Rojas suggested the Commission come up with three different locations and proceed from there. Additional suggestions were NE 6 Avenue and Constitution Park, the Bayfront, and Grand Concourse & 95 St. Commission F.A.C. mtg., 4/11/17, pg. 2 of 2 members will meet at 6 p.m. before the regular meeting on May 9 to scout these suggested locations.
