2017-02-07 FAC Minutes
Revised
Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on February 7, 2017.
Members present: Susan Ackley Lorena Bracho-Mijares
Victor Bruce Madeleine Haddocks
Neil Kodsi Miryam Rojas
Michael Stock
Also present: Angela Dorney, Interim Recreation Director
Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant
The meeting was called to order at 6:35 p.m.
Mr. Kodsi made a motion to approve the minutes of the January 10, 2017, meeting. Motion
seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved.
Ms. Dorney gave the Fine Arts financial report; $2760 in the FY 2017 budget, $2816 in Art in
Public Places, $2700 in the donation account and $300 in the Unite Miami Shores account.
Ms. Ackley related that Unite MS will not be reviewing grant requests until mid-March. Plan B
would be to ask the Village Council for emergency funding for the spring concert. Mr. Stock
questioned why go to Council before speaking to Commission members. Ms. Ackley said she does
not want to deplete the donation account to pay for the concert. It was added that the Egret deadline
is approaching to place an ad for the spring concert. Mr. Kodsi asked if there is any procedure for
money that is retroactively received for grants. Ms. Ackley added that she would like to use the
Art in Public Places money to purchase permanent uplighting for the mural wall.
It was noted that the April artist exhibit costs approximately $350 and Michael Stock's fee for the
music education series is $400. The cost for Rhythm Trail for three half hour sets at Unity Day is
$525. The question becomes does the Commission use money from their budget or go to Council
to request funds. It was noted that the Village only gives money for emergencies and a specific
cause is needed to be added to the agenda. Mr. Kodsi suggested approaching the Village and
advising them that the Commission will pay the fixed cost of the band but asking the Village to
pay for services.
Ms. Rojas suggested that for Unity Day, the artist can donate pages from the coloring book for
kids to color and the Wynwood coloring book could be sold with the artist collecting $20 and Fine
Arts would get $5.00 from the sale of each book.
At these time spring concert flyers were distributed to Commission members for critique. Ms.
Mijares offered to donate $150 towards activities at the spring concert.
F.A.C. mtg., 2/7/17, pg. 2 of 2
Ms. Mijares offered to do the graphic design for the April art exhibit. Discussion turned to possible
artists for the April exhibit. Artists include Jose Masis-Oliver who has 3-dimensional glass work
on canvas and Marco Caridad, a local artist with contemporary/abstract pieces. Between these two
artists Commission members voted 5:2 in favor of Jose Masis-Oliver. Ms. Mijares said it is hard
to find artists with small enough pieces to accommodate the library's walls. Ms. Mijares suggested
the following artists for exhibit: Fernando Sucre, colorful/whimsical folk art that will also draw
kids in and Alberto Cavalieri who has aluminum/bronze sculptures. Ms. Haddocks suggested
having two artists exhibit. Commission members voted 5:2 in favor of Alberto Cavalieri. Ms.
Ackley presented the following artists on behalf of the library: Andrew Kaufman who has photos
of Panama compiled in a book and artist Tali Almor. It was suggested having both Alberto
Cavalieri and Jose Masis-Oliver for the April exhibit but need to make sure Cavalieri has pedestals
for the sculptures.
Discussion turned to the Mayor's Gala. It was suggested that the Commission donate $300 towards
the event. Mr. Rojas suggested donating $250. Ms. Rojas made a motion to approve $250 from
the Commission's donation account for the Mayor's Gala. Motion seconded by Mr. Bruce
and unanimously approved.
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
