2016-09-13 FAC Minutes Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on September 13, 2016. Members Present: Susan Ackley Victor Bruce Valentina Gutchess Madeleine Haddocks Neil Kodsi Miryam Rojas Michael Stock Also Present: Angela Dorney, Recreation Director Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the minutes of the August 9, 2016 meeting. Motion seconded by Ms. Haddocks and unanimously approved. It was reported there is $1595.80 in the Commission's FY 2016 budget. There is another $362.50 to be paid to Jean Corona that is not reflected in that amount. The Commission has allocated $250 from the donation account to go to Margaritavillage. Discussion turned to the Fireside and Spring concerts. Uproot Hootenanny, a 5-member band, was suggested for the fireside concert for $1200. Groovedogs, a 5-piece classic rock band, was suggested for the spring concert. February 10, 2017 was suggested for the fireside concert with an alternate date of February 24. April 2, 2017 was suggested for the spring concert with an alternate date of March 26. Ms. Haddocks suggested Mariel Epps, a 4-piece jazz group. French Horn, a gypsy jazz band, was another option for the fireside concert. Mr. Stock made a motion to give Neil Kodsi the authority to negotiate with Groovedogs for up to $1,000. Motion seconded by Ms. Haddocks and unanimously approved. Ms. Rojas made motion to allow Michael Stock to contact Uproot Hootenanny and French Horn and negotiate up to $1,200 for the fireside concert on February 10 or February 24. Discussion turned to Stuart Sheldon. It was related that Mr. Sheldon has just exhibited at Miami County Day (same title of show). Concern was expressed that people may not attend the Commission's exhibit since they already attended the same exhibit at Country Day. Proof of the Egret ad was distributed to members for discussion. A suggestion was made for music at the Sheldon exhibit; namely either flutist Cathy Marro or Michel Gonzalez. Ms. Haddocks made a motion for Michael Stock to contact Cathy Marro and Michel Gonzalez for the October artist reception and negotiate up to $200. Motion seconded by Ms. Gutchess and unanimously approved. Ms. Rojas will look into the "guitar advertisement fan" for the promotion of Commission events. Ms. Rojas will look into pricing for 2 color and 4 color "fans" and report at the October meeting. F.A.C. mtg., 9/13/16, pg. 2 of 2 Ms. Gutchess will bring suggestions for the April library exhibit to the October meeting. The tentative date for the library exhibit is April 28, 2017. Silvia Lizama was suggested for the April exhibit. The 'bubble wrap' artist was suggested for the Village Hall lobby in January 2017. Artists are still needed for the Village Hall lobby and the April 2017 exhibit. Ms. Rojas knows of an artist who has large scale pieces and will bring more information to the October meeting. Discussion turned to the size of Upcoming Egret ads. It was suggested the Commission go from a 6 unit to an 8-unit ad for the spring concert, artist receptions and Mr. Stock's educational series at the library. Ms. Gutchess suggested having a steel band instead of a drumming circle at Unity Day. Ms. Gutchess volunteered to investigate steel bands and bring prices to the October meeting. Discussion turned to the art in public places project with artist Lori Nozick. Ms. Ackley requested that the Commission approve $550 for prepayment to the artist. It was noted that there is no contract with the artist. The Village attorney is not accepting the contract as written as it is more an art in public places project for Doctors Charter School rather than the Village. The Village is at odds over where the liability falls for the project. Ms. Ackley related that she is meeting with the DCS principal later this week. Commission members said that an artist cannot be prepaid without a contract. Ms. Ackley noted the artist has been waiting for over 5 months to proceed. Mr. Kodsi said if the meeting at DCS works out, a contract can subsequently be written. Commission members agreed to let Mr. Kodsi write a contract for the art in public places project pending the school's approval. One of the Commission members suggested postponing the project until next year. Mr. Kodsi suggested prepaying for the Egret's ad for Gallery Night in September so that the money is used before the end of the fiscal year. Mr. Bruce made a motion for Neil Kodsi to work with the Chamber of Commerce on the prepayment of an 8-unit ad for Gallery Night for up to $800. Motion seconded by Ms. Gutchess and unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
