2016-02-09 FAC Minutes Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on February 9, 2016. Members Present: Susan Ackley Victor Bruce Janet Goodman Valentina Gutchess Neil Kodsi Miryam Rojas Michael Stock Also Present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant Cheryl Gowing, Library John Van Beekum, Resident The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the minutes of the January 9, 2016 meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Kodsi and unanimously approved. At this time John Van Beekum, a Miami Shores resident, University of Miami professor and photographer was introduced to the Commission. Mr. Van Beekum is interested in exhibiting at the library and presented his work to the members. His photos depict the land through people’s eyes in Texas. Discussion turned to the Latino 500. Pictures of artist Leonor Anthony were distributed for possible image on event flyer. Latino 500 celebrates the Latin influence in America. It was noted that Barry University will be advertising in the Miami New Time; using both internal and external advertising. It was suggested to see if Barry will be advertising in the Egret to make sure there aren’t two ads being placed for the event. It was noted that an 8 unit ad is $619; to print the ad ourselves would cost $500 and another $699 insertion fee. Mr. Stock suggested bringing various musicians in to play background music for 15 minutes each. There will be guarapo and cigar rolling outside in the garden. It was noted that a one hour performance with two tango dancers from PAN would cost $600. A suggestion was made that Cezar could provide Latin music outside. There are two options for an invite for the event: Option one has pictures on the front with the event description and the back would have the bio of the artists and curator; Option two would have two pictures on the front and two pictures on the back with a brief bio of the artists. Due to the number of artists/curator it was suggested to leave off the pictures and just include bios. It was suggested that Carlos Cuesta can provide cigar rolling for the following cost: 25 cigars $195; 50 cigars $245; 75 cigars $295 and 100 cigars for $345. Ms. Ackley distributed magnets/screen cleaners with an image from artist Leonor Anthony. Magnets F.A.C. mtg., 2/9/16, pg. 2 of 2 would cost .40 and screen cleaners $1. Mr. Stock is voting against the magnet. Ms. Goodman would like the money to go toward another performance rather than the magnets. It was suggested that the food Abbie Salt provides can be supplemented with additional food. Ms. Gutchess offered to be responsible for helping with the food. In regard to music it was noted that background music is lost at events. It was suggested keeping a budget of $400 for music. The preliminary budget is $2064. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve $2064 for Latino 500 as a rough budget. Motion seconded by Ms. Goodman and unanimously approved. Discussion turned to the grant applications. The Commission is asking for $5000 from Unite Miami Shores and there is $28,000 available in grants from the Miami Shores Community Alliance to all organizations. Ms. Ackley related that artist Lori Nozicki is very interested in providing an art in public places sculpture for $4500. It was noted that the Commission has never paid an artist for a sculpture before. The sculpture would be done in conjunction with DCS. It would be displayed for two years at Village Hall and then be put permanently at DCS. Doctors Charter School is planning on asking for a grant to match what the Commission is asking for, namely $3000. Mr. Stock made a motion to write a grant request to the Miami Shores Community Alliance for $3000 to go towards Lori Nozicki’s sculpture. Motion seconded by Mr. Bruce and unanimously approved. Mr. Kodsi volunteered to write the grant request. Discussion turned to the campfire concert. Ms. Rojas is still trying for Proper Sausage to be a vendor but they do not have a grill. At this time Jefe’s, The Empanada Food Truck and Yummy Sugar Mama are secured for the event. The Boy Scouts will maintain the fire. Discussion turned to the spring concert with Diane Ward who will be performing ‘soulful pop’ music. Ms. Ackley expressed concern over the choice of the artist, as this is not the usual type of music for a spring concert. It was noted that Ms. Goodman has already verbally contracted with Diane Ward. Members viewed the proposed ad for the concert and made revisions. Sean Dibble will perform at Unity Day with three 30-minute sets at 12 Noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. It was noted that at Gallery Night there was not a large attendance at Village Hall. The Commission will need to revisit how to encourage more people to come to Village Hall for next year’s event. The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
