Members Present: Susan Ackley Victor Bruce Janet Goodman Neil Kodsi Miryam Rojas Michael Stock Members Absent: Alan Poppe Also Present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant Seth Bramson, Resident Iris Acosta, Resident The meeting was called to order at 6:10 p.m. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the minutes of the May 12, 2015 meeting. Ms. Rojas asked about the cost of the October event increasing from the initial estimate of $1500 to $2500. Ms. Ackley said that through discussions the costs have increased. The motion was seconded by Ms. Goodman and unanimously approved. It was noted that Seth Bramson has many artifacts that can be used for the October exhibit, but space inside the library will be limited. Mr. Bruce is interested to see what the library has for the exhibit. Mr. Bruce would like the focus of the exhibit to be on NE 2nd Avenue. A subcommittee for the exhibit was formed comprising Mr. Bruce, Mr. Poppe, Mr. Stock and Ms. Ackley. Mr. Bramson suggested that the exhibit be opened up to the community to attract more people. Mr. Kodsi said if the exhibit is limited to 2nd Avenue, it may become ‘stale’. It was noted this discussion may be premature since there is no way to know how many submissions will be received. The library is open to expanding the exhibit into the ‘Mr. Brockway’ room, if needed. A draft for the Egret history corner for the exhibit was distributed for review. Mr. Bramson has photos for the Egret article. Ms. Rojas suggested that the October exhibit focus on NE 2nd Avenue due to the sheer number of photos and was open to additional exhibits if this exhibit is a success. It was noted that if residents are invited to submit their photos, the resident should be aware that their photo will not be returned. Different themes were suggested that included ‘Our Past in Pictures’ and ‘Shores Thru the Decades’. Ms. Rojas made a motion to accept ‘Our Past in Pictures’ as the theme of the archival exhibit. The motion was seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. The position statement for the exhibit F.A.C. mtg., 6/9/15, pg. 2 of 2 is “Miami Shores: More than 115 years in photographs and documents”. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the edited copy of the Egret ad. The motion was seconded by Ms. Goodman and unanimously approved. Mr. Bramson suggested that the exhibit will need a 16x20 description of the history of Miami Shores. Some estimated cost for displaying the photos are as follows; 8x10 ($18); 16x20 ($60); 20x30 ($95). Mr. Kodsi made a motion to approve Seth Bramson as curator for the archival exhibit. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. Discussion turned to the Village Hall lobby exhibit. Pedro Rubio has produced preliminary site specific sketches of the Everglades for the Commission’s consideration. This would be a removable mural. Mr. Rubio has not yet decided if the mural would be donated to the new recreation facility after display. Mr. Stock made a motion to accept Pedro Rubio as the artist for the Village Hall lobby in 2016. Motion seconded by Mr. Kodsi and unanimously approved. There will be no charge from Mr. Rubio for the creation of the site specific mural. Ms. Ackley suggested artist Kerry Ware for the library exhibit. Paintings on plaster is the medium he works with. The artwork is 20x24 sized pieces. Another artist to consider is Kaylan who has portraits in layered glass. It was noted that the library is concerned on the effect these portraits may have with children. Stuart Sheldon is interested in a group show not a solo show. Discussion turned to the campfire concert which will take place on the playing fields near the Tot Lot. There will be a stage with performers, with a fire pit located in front of the performers and the public will be in front of the fire pit. Mr. Stock expressed concern with the obstruction of the performers being behind the fire pit. Ms. Goodman suggested Indian drumming for entertainment. It was noted that it would be too expensive to hire Russell Cozad. Another suggestion was Berta Bonali (Navajo drumming). The price for (2) half hour sets for an acoustic band featuring Diane Ward and Jack Shawde is $500. Ms. Goodman also played various cd’s of groups for entertainment including Bob Lind and Alan Rhody. The Commission decided that Diane & Jack are their first choice. The campfire concert was set for February 19 and Gallery Night was set for January 29. Ms. Rojas made a motion to approve $500 for Diane Ward and Jack Shawde to perform at the fireside concert, tentatively scheduled for February 19. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. Mr. Estep related that it will cost approximately $75 for Plexiglas for the Unity Day artwork and $15 for an 8x4 plaque for Daniel Fiorda’s sculpture. Mr. Kodsi made a motion to approve $90 for the plaque and the Plexiglas. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. The meeting adjourned at 8:05 p.m.
