Members Absent: Neil Kodsi Miryam Rojas
Michael Stock
Also Present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director
Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant
Seth Bramson, Resident
Toni Downs, Library Board
The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m.
At this time Ms. Ackley distributed out a synopsis of the October 2015 Archival Exhibit to the
Commission members. The estimated cost of the event is $1500. The Commission is asking the
Egret for permission to place an ad for the event in the history corner of the publication. The
exhibit is scheduled for October 9.
It was noted that Mr. Bramson will be the curator of the archival exhibit. Mr. Bramson gave a brief
summary of the pictures that he can contribute to the archival exhibit, including a Country Club
menu, various photos, Miami Shores postcards. Mr. Bramson said that select images can be
enlarged into poster size images for display. There are images of locations on Biscayne
Boulevard, negatives of various images of Miami Shores. It was noted that people looking at the
exhibit may wonder why their collections of images are not represented in the exhibit. Input from
everyone is vital; Mr. Bramson will not be the final decision maker for the exhibit entries. Anyone
interested in submitting entries for the exhibit must have good, clear entries to be eligible for
exhibit. Mr. Bramson is not charging the Commission for his services. The only fee for the
Commission is for any photo enlargements. The suggested minimum size of enlargements is
16X20.
A subcommittee will need to be formed for this exhibit. One of the first steps is to determine how
much space the library has for this exhibit. Mr. Bruce suggested narrowing any entries to be
pictures showing NE 2nd Avenue. Boundaries will need to be established for exhibit entries. The
library suggested that a form be created for all submissions for safety purposes. Mr. Poppe
suggested that an article will need to be written for the Egret to publicize. Mr. Estep noted that in
the recent recreation center survey, 85% of respondents said they get their information form the
Village newsletter so the Commission should not discount the newsletter for advertising
purposes. Ms. Ackley estimated that the archival exhibit will cost $2500; the exhibit will be
displayed in the library for six weeks. It was noted that one of the mystery costs will be printing
the posters. Mr. Bramson previously said that any enlargements of his prints would become his
property; this would need to be negotiated with Mr. Bramson. It was noted that it would be
cheaper to scan and print black and white pictures without saving them to a file. It was decided to
table the cost of the exhibit until the June meeting; the cost of printed enlargements and the
number of photos needed is essential to provide an accurate estimate.
Ms. Goodman made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 7, 2015 minutes. Motion
seconded by Mr. Poppe and unanimously approved.
Mr. Estep related that there is $2137 remaining in the FY 2015 budget and there is $2645 in the
donation account. Ms. Goodman provided $2 from the donation jar from Mr. Munchlee’s exhibit.
F.A.C. mtg., 5/12/15, pg. 2 of 2
Ms. Ackley said that the Mr. Munchlee’s April exhibit had a great turnout, a very family oriented
atmosphere.
It was noted that the library has requested monetary donations, instead of books, for their
children’s wing expansion for Memorial Day. Ms. Ackley suggested that the Commission donate
$100 for Memorial Day. Mr. Poppe made a motion to approve $100 for Memorial Day. Motion
seconded by Ms. Goodman and unanimously approved.
Discussion turned to French Horn. The original cost to hire this group to perform was $350; the
cost is now $2100 for the five member band. The lowest cost would be $1300 to secure the band
with four members. Commission members agreed that they cannot financially pay this fee for a
band for a Friday night live event.
Ms. Ackley related that photographer Chris Gug does not wish to exhibit in Miami Shores. Some
suggested artists to replace Mr. Gug include Marilyn Brown (black and white photographer), Tony
Mendoza (illustrations), Eileen Seitz (water colors exhibited in El Portal’s recent art show), Stuart
Sheldon (new work for exhibit), Kerrie Ware, and Pedro Rubio. Mr. Rubio has proposed creating
a mural of the Everglades for the Village Hall lobby at no charge. Commission needs to see if Mr.
Rubio would be donating the piece to the Village after the length of the exhibit.
A suggestion was made for Flamenco Dancing. It was decided to table further discussion until
June when the cost and availability of the group can be determined.
A suggestion was also made for a campfire concert. Ms. Goodman distributed a rendering of the
proposed event. It was noted that the location of the campfire on the ‘clay’ would be okay, but a
half circle scenario would be better, if possible. A February 2016 date was suggested. A cost
estimate for a fire pit, entertainers and possible drummers is needed.
The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
