2014-11-18 FAC Minutes Minutes of the Fine Arts Commission held on November 18, 2014. Members present: Susan Ackley Victor Bruce Janet Goodman Neil Kodsi Alan Poppe Miryam Rojas Michael Stock Also present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve the minutes of the October 14, 2014, meeting. Motion seconded by Ms. Goodman and unanimously approved. At this time self-introductions between current and new Commission members were made. It was suggested that the new chair and vice chair of the Commission be appointed at the December meeting to give new members a chance to get acquainted with the meeting. Mr. Estep reported that the Commission has $5595 remaining in their FY 2015 budget and the donation account has $2430. Discussion turned to Green Day. It was noted that the Commission was in charge of the stage entertainment. A suggestion was made to leave the band on the south end of the street but move the food a little farther away from the music. Mr. Estep recommended a sound technician be hired for all three bands next year. Ms. Goodman suggested that one band play two sets to save on downtime between bands. It was related to the members that The Muppet Christmas Carol will be shown at the Dec. 13 matinee at O Cinema. An executive decision was made selecting this movie so that the information could be put into the December newsletter and Egret. Since David Traupman designed the invites/posters for Commission event, Mr. Kodsi offered to contact Minuteman Press who may be able to help. Ms. Goodman offered to ask Mr. Traupman if he would be willing to help with the Egret ad/invites. It was related that the Daniel Fiorda’s totem sculpture was accepted for the Village Hall North Lawn art in public places installation. It was suggested to include the Library’s painted parking meters and have them installed on Gallery Night (Jan. 30). The money raised from the meters will benefit the Library Board. At this time three pictures were distributed to the Commission for review for Village Hall Lobby exhibit. Stuart Sheldon was the suggested artist for exhibit. His work included a 40X30 aerial view of Paris. Ms. Rojas would like to see more samples of his work. Ms. Ackley thinks the ‘brighter pieces’ would be good for the lobby. Mr. Stock liked all the F.A.C. mtg., 11/18/14, pg. 2 of 2 pieces. Ms. Ackley suggested keeping the present work in the lobby until all the Commission members are in agreement about an artist. Ms. Stock noted that two of the pieces have a theme. Mr. Poppe said it’s hard to decide when you’re looking at one piece without another option for comparison. Ms. Goodman suggested having a group of artists display their work instead of just one. The artist selected for exhibit at the library is Pedro Rubio. Ms. Rojas believes that Mr. Rubio would be a good fit for the Village Lobby display but would need to see if his pieces are large enough for this display. Ms. Ackley will contact Mr. Rubio about an exhibit at Village Hall. It was noted that the library is a thirty day installation and Village Hall is a one year installation. Ms. Goodman will contact Mr. Sheldon to see what additional pieces he could loan for the span of a year. It was noted that the Village is still working on the final completion of the Miami Shores entryway signs. It was noted that the Commission is part of a ‘professional advisory committee’ for the entryway signs. It was noted that Elizabeth Esper is retiring on December 19. Ms. Ackley would like the Commission to be part of the event and was asked to provide flowers. Ms. Ackley is asking the Commission for a $50 budget for flowers. Mr. Stock made a motion to approve a $50 budget for flowers for Elizabeth Esper’s retirement party. Motion seconded by Ms. Goodman. Ms. Rojas amended the motion for the Commission to spend up to $75. The amended motion was seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. It was noted that Mayor Holly hosted an artist brunch on October 25th. Ms. Ackley drafted a thank you letter for review. The Commission approved the thank you letter. Ms. Rojas made a motion to approve spending $44.28 for bagels for the Mayor’s reception. Motion seconded by Mr. Stock and unanimously approved. It was related that Abbie Salt has volunteered to provide the food for the January 30 Gallery Night receptions. It was noted that the Alissa Christine, the previous library artist, felt the reception ended a little early. Mr. Stock will contact flutist Cathy Demeo about performing at Gallery Night. At this time Friday Night Live was explained to the new members. Suggestions for performers were Zoe Lewis, who was paid $500 the last time she performed; French Horn for $350; Grant Livingston for $300 and Debbie & Gary for $300. French Horn is a gypsy/jazz band who sing in English and French. Suggestions for the March spring concert include Chloe Dolandis and ‘M’ Pauer. Mr. Stock suggested French Horn for a Friday Night Live on February 20. Ms. Ackley will check on their availability. Ms. Goodman inquired about getting business cards for the Commission. Mr. Estep said that politically this has been abused in the past since the Village’s name is prominent on the cards. The meeting adjourned at 7:55 p.m.
