Members present: Susan Ackley Miryam Rojas
Abbie Salt David Traupman
Members absent: Janet Goodman Michael Stock
Also present: Jerry Estep, Recreation Director
Leslie Rackl, Executive Assistant
The meeting was called to order at 6:25 p.m.
Correction to the minutes of the June 10, 2014, meeting. Page one, paragraph seven,
line four; add ‘for exhibit on Village Hall’s north lawn’. Ms. Salt made a motion to
approve the minutes of the June 10, 2014, meeting with correction. Motion
seconded by Ms. Rojas and unanimously approved.
Mr. Estep reported that the Commission has $85.93 remaining in their FY ’14 budget
and $2369 in the donation account.
Discussion turned to art in public places. It was noted that the Bass Museum is closing
for renovations for a year and they are offering an exhibit for a two-year loan. Daniel
Fiorda is one suggested artist (totem sculptures) and Bass is also offering four separate
pieces from their collection. A PAC (professional advisory committee) would need to be
convened to discuss the submitted art work. Ms. Salt made a motion to convene a
PAC for the submitted art work. Motion seconded by Mr. Traupman and
unanimously approved. The Commission members discussed if any of the
prospective artists should be eliminated from consideration. The art work of the ‘woman’
by artist Reed van Brunschot was considered inappropriate for Miami Shores. The blue
man/mummy was also deemed not appropriate for display at a government building.
The PAC will discuss three submissions; the totem sculptures, the sphere and the Aztec
figure. Members of the PAC include Vivian Rodriguez, Jean Corona and Miryam Rojas.
Daniel Fiorda and the Bass Museum curator will present their pieces separately.
Discussion turned to the Village Hall lobby exhibit. Mr. Traupman presented the runners
up from last year’s call to artists; Pedro Rubio, Ernesto Kunde, Carlos Innocente
Gonzalez and Noreen Morelli. Mr. Rubio was suggested as an option for a library
exhibit. There are some bamboo sculptures for a lobby exhibit (need to inquire from the
artist if it is possible to color the sculpture).
It was noted that October 10 is the tentative date, pending the library board approval, for
the library reception for artist Alissa Christine. Gallery Night is scheduled for January 30
and movie night at O Cinema for a Saturday matinee could be either October 25 or
November 15. Nights and weekends are not available at O Cinema. O Cinema
suggested the Commission sponsor a movie event; they are looking at having a movie
series and the Commission could sponsor one segment of the series. It was decided to

table further discussion until the September meeting. The Commission decided on a
four unit ad to put in the Egret, and tabled discussion on Friday night live/folk music and
Unity Day.
It was noted that Mayor Holly will be hosting a Breakfast for the Arts on October 25. Ms.
Ackley will forward a guest list of 28 people to the mayor.
It was suggested that a donor wall be created at Village Hall for donations made to the
Commission, similar to a donor wall at the Bass Museum. It was suggested that there
would have to be a minimum donation amount of $1000 to be put on a donation wall. It
was also suggested that people donate to a specific objective/event rather than just a flat
donation.
It was suggested that Commission members wear lapel pins at events instead of t-shirts.
Ms. Ackley noted that she has pieces of art work in her home that were left in a house
that was recently sold. A suggestion was made to sell these pieces at Unity Day, but
permission would need to be granted from the relatives prior to offering them for sale.
The meeting adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
